More importantly, she was a she. Blatant subtle sexism there, as with the fact that the villain was female. And ageism, as the helmswoman obviously was Spock's junior. Not to mention creationism, as the concept of evolution was so openly derided.

Seriously speaking, Spock had a point in keeping the lady in line. The ship was doing warp 8.4 - about the first time they bothered with decimal points. The whole point of that exercise was to get back to the planet as soon as possible, and if they cared enough to say .4 rather than .5, they should care enough to get the time estimate down to minutes or better.

As for Scotty's imprecision, that was even more damning. The ship was going to explode in a matter of seconds, so it would definitely do to know exactly how many seconds. Although Spock did maintain a humorous atmosphere about it, no doubt to better motivate Scott to keep his calm and save them all.

Lot of subtle racism/bigotry in this episode.

Italian guy dies.

Black guy dies.

Spock being an asshole to a Scotsman and the African doctor.

Kirk being an asshole to Sulu while deriding Chekov.

Hologram Killer Lady attacking non-WASP people before attacking anyone else.

Eh... MeanJoePhaser,

I'm assuming that you missed the first 3 minutes of "That Which Survives" because Ensign Wyatt, a WASP/White Guy, as you would identify him as, was operating the transporter controls while Captain Kirk & the landing party beamed down.

Wanna know what happened next?

Losira, the Hologram Killer Lady, pops out of thin air, cries out that "You Must Not Go!", & then swiftly turns around & kills this WASP named Wyatt with a touch of her hand.

So much for this "racism/bigotry theory" of yours.

I have two questions about this episode:

- What is that little device Spock is always carrying around with him on the bridge? It's not a communicator (too small).

- When Scotty's men hoist him up into the Jeffries tube, he appears to be *pulled* into it from the other side. Any reason for that?

I've always assumed that it was some 23rd century version of a science-calculator.

Aside from the eerie Losira hologram/projection effect and the spooky music accompanying her disappearances, there's not much to this one. I was kind of hoping the new CGI effect depicting the Enterprise being "thrown"/beamed across space would have been more than just a faint white glow around the ship.
