Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS*****

Re: Q&A

David cgc said:
I wouldn't call it a mistake, since he expended nearly a page of exposition about the origin of the First Officer/XO split which occurred at some point in the misty history of Starfleet.
Which nonetheless fails to track with any episode or movie of Star Trek, and puts it at odds with the command structure of every Starfleet ship in all other Star Trek books. Just because he put a lot of effort into justifying it doesn't mean it makes sense.

(And now the villagers grab their pitchforks, as well...)

Re: Q&A

Actually, I just chalk the whole thing up to differing command styles of dfferent captains.

And as I mentioned upthread, the ENT fiction has established something similar, if not identical.

Re: Q&A

There is nothing "similar" or "identical" about having an officer of the watch. That's standard practice on any ship. On most vessels, the officer of the watch on most shifts is a lieutenant.

What isn't standard practice is thinking that "executive officer", "first officer" and/or "XO" are different jobs, because they're not. Just as "captain", "commanding officer" and "CO" are not separate jobs. They are just varying nomenclature for the same job.

Re: Q&A

BTW, Keith, have I mentioned that I really enjoyed the book? Q was right on the mark. I could hear John de Lancie everytime Q spoke, and I found the multiple Qs to be hilarious, just in trying to keep track of which Q was Q.
Thanks very much!

Re: Q&A

I do not think the PD usage of XO is the correct one, since First Officer and XO seem to be the norm in what I recall from the novels and tv/movies.

Re: Q&A

Finished this couple of days ago, only three days after finishing Resistance. I just couldn't put it down!

I loved how it weaved all the Q stories together even further than before, giving meaning to his visits to the ship. I also liked how with each visit to the continum you knew which Q was which, each with a distinct "voice".

Great read KRAD!

Re: Q&A

I just posted my review of Q&A at Epinions.

Personally, I consider it the jewel among a bunch of mediocre stories so far published in the TNG "relaunch."

Thanks for the great read, KRAD!

Dave

Re: Q&A

That was some good story telling there KRAD. Anything with Q in it is always going to be a good read IMO.

What else have you got lined up for us???

Well, Star Trek-wise, I've got three prose items coming out in 2008 that I can talk about: Klingon Empire: A Burning House in February, "Family Matters" in the Mirror Universe: Shards and Shadows anthology, and A Gutted World (working title) in Myriad Universes: Echoes and Refractions.

Re: Q&A

^ Why, yes. I do have a lot.

In fact, I forgot one. :D I've also got an eBook coming in March, the final installment of the Star Trek: The Next Generation miniseries Slings and Arrows, entitled Enterprises of Great Pitch and Moment in March.

On top of that, I've written a CSI: NY novel called Four Walls, edited a Doctor Who: Short Trips anthology called The Quality of Leadership, and I'm also doing a Supernatural novel called Bone Key.

I have several other projects in development that I can't talk about yet...

Re: Q&A

I know that Shards and Shadows has been referred to as a Mirror Universe novel but is this actually the collection of stories in alternate universes we've heard of (I seem to remember hearing the term "Myriad Universes" at some point...)?

Re: Q&A

^ Shards and Shadows is a Mirror Universe short-story anthology, with stories specifically taking place in the same MU as "Mirror, Mirror," "In a Mirror, Darkly," and the various DS9 MU episodes (not to mention Glass Empires and Obsidian Alliances).

Myriad Universes is a six-novel/two-book miniseries in the same format as the aforementioned MU trades this year, where each short novel will take place in an alternate reality, a la DC's Elseworlds or Marvel's What If...?

Re: Q&A

Ahh, interesting. I must have missed seeing the MU book's announcement. Have any details been released as to story content? Will there be any follow up on stories from the previous two MU collections or will this one be focusing on different characters? I've still got to get around to reading the first two volumes but it defintiely seems like a series with endless possibilities. Seeing the Vanguard series in the MU would be interesting except I don't know if it could get much darker. ;)
(sorry to be dragging conversation away from Q & A... I promise this will be the last question.)

Cool, I'll deffinitely have to check that stuff out too. I'm especially curious about the Supernatural one, because despite my initial concerns I did really enjoy Nevermore. I also like CSI:NY so I'll probably check that out too.

Re: Q&A

I hope KRAD gets to delve into the Resident Evil movie verse once more. Seems like a lot of stuff could have happened between Apocalypse/Extinction that wasn't touched upon in his novel.

BTW reading the novel before really did help. It explained some things.
