Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS*****

I was hoping that Q & A would also address the discrepancy of Wesley evolving into a Traveller (which shows that Q is right and humanity has a lot of potential) and the IMO dreadful Voyager episode “Threshold” that showed humans evolving (or more accurately, devolving) in the far future into mindless, mud loving salamanders obsessed with procreation. That didn`t happen.

The producers of Voyager themselves have disowned "Threshold," declaring it an apocryphal tale. So there's no need to reconcile it with anything -- it just plain never happened.

I didn`t know that. That is good news :D

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

It wasn`t meant as a complaint, just an observation. If I had known before what Christopher just said, I wouldn`t even have mentioned it.

You offered a very detailed look at Q and his motivations. As I tried to explain, you also pointed out in your book that Q sees a lot of potential in humanity. I wondered how humanity`s development as shown in “Threshold” fits into this picture keeping in mind the positive evolution of Wesley.

It is certainly very good news that “Threshold” never happened.

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

If it were necessary to reconcile Wesley with "Threshold," it would be very easy to do so, since evolution is not a matter of predestination, simply a process of adaptation to environmental change. A single species can evolve into various different branches depending on what environments they develop in.

Of course, one of the hugest problems with "Threshold" is that it ignores this, instead making the utterly idiotic assertion that the future evolution of a species is fixed and predictable regardless of environmental circumstance. Braga had the seed of a good idea, in that he wanted to challenge the commonplace assumption that evolution entails some kind of inevitable upward progression toward superior forms. And he was right about that; the idea that evolution works that way is totally wrong. There is no "forward" or "upward" direction to evolution; it's just adaptation to changing environments. Unfortunately, the way he chose to challenge this silly notion was just as silly and ill-conceived in its own way.

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

As well it should not, for a variety of reasons, IMO

When was this?? :alienblush:

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

^^Braga and Berman have remarked on this in various interviews; I don't know when it was first stated.

I actually liked that bit. A lot! I am a sucker for parallel universe stories. Seeing all those Enterprises play themselves out, really nailed it for me. Some of them were gloriously over-the-top (such as the ISS Enterprise; the Qu', an Enterprise overrun by Klingons; etc.). Awesome!

That one Enterprise where Picard was cybernetically integrated into it (as its only crewmember) really freaked me out even more, though...

I had way too much fun with those alternate Enterprises. It gave me an excuse to work in cameos from all over (Ro, Vale, Yar, Branson, Perim, Data, Madden, Hedril, and the suddenly-ubiquitous Thomas Holloway).

That was kinda the idea.

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

Reminded me of that Andromeda novel where the same thing happens to Dylan. He finds himself on some totally hilarious versions of the ship. Unfortunately I can't remember who wrote it...

Actually that one struck me as a more plausible extrapolation of 24th-century technology than the usual TV-SF paradigm of ships with hundreds of people on board. Life support is very power-intensive. ;)

Not an entirely new notion to express in TV SF - Blake's 7 did it as a nice throwaway in the last episode of its third season, and it was obviously referencing its share of written stuff.
Edit: Though after a second's thought, it strikes me that the Blake episode does stil imply that the course of evolution is fixed, so that's not so good.

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

Finished and loved this one. Liked how characters from different stories, series, etc. saw something, how in the interludes I had to pay close attention to which Q Q was referring to. It's good policy to keep your Q's correctly identified.

This was a great Q story, I could see him becoming frustrated when the crew started to ignore him. The multiple Enterprises were great (Picard finally on the bridge crew, or hooked into the ship alone were great). The new second officer (Randy) will be interesting to get to know as will 'Chuckles'. Great read.

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

^ Thanks muchly!

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

I just wanted to say that I enjoyed the book but felt there was to little of Q.

Also, I wanted to say that I don't think Q is really bad just misunderstood. He means well.........Sometimes.

Though I did wonder why it would be at all similar to a mainline universe Sovereign-class, given that it probably wouldn't have things like rooms or people and all the stuff that goes along with them. I imagine the ship would be quite a bit smaller without a crew to support.

I really enjoyed the book. I ended up finishing it in one sitting from time time when Q showed up in the present day. Just off the top of my head, a few things I wanted to comment and question on. I don't recall hearing about Bacco University before, so I'm curious about the relation, if any, to the President.

At first, I was a little tweaked that "I, Q" was mentioned as just being a bedtime story, but after I finished the novel, I understood why that was. It'd be pretty much the only way to bring it into this story. It'd seem silly if Q reflected on that time he kept the universe from being destroyed by a deity or deity-equivalent being because they were bored with it as part of his efforts to lay the groundwork for keeping the universe from being destroyed by deity-equivalents because they were bored with it. It'd seem redundant, but that works if it was an instructional tale to q about what was going to happen.

I got misty at the end when we found out what Geordi really thought that morning.

Finally, when Q first showed up in sickbay, he seemed really mean, even for Q. I was wondering if maybe he liked it when Sisko punched him, and was trying to provoke someone else into taking a shot at him. ;)

Who says it was? Leybenzon's exact words were "most appear to be Sovereign-class" (emphasis mine). :)

Glad you liked it! The university was named for Nan Bacco, back when she was the planetary governor of Cestus III.

Then my work here is done.... :)

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

I was originally planning to get just the PAD novel, and hope I was able to get through without knowledge of this book.

Now that I've seen such a positive reaction, I'll seek it out when it reaches Australia.

Hopefully it comes sooner than the last Dragonlance novel, which I've had on order for three months...

I thought the same thing, since I'm not a big Q fan. However, the introduction and personalization of two new crewmembers, along with the praise, got me to pick it up.

Airfreighted ones already available at Galaxy, Sydney. So too is "The Sky's the Limit" and "Academy: Collision Course".

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

I know this is not part of the thread but since I'm in the middle of reading the book. I just saw Reign Over Me yesterday and it was nice to see John De Lacie finally since his last appearence on Voyager. Got me thinking of what he is like besides being on Star Trek.

But over all, I'm enjoying the book right now and probably will be done w/ it within the week. It is just so damn good. I feel like I'm in the middle of an episode right now. After watching a little of DS9 on Spike last night, I was thinking of how Worf would be on the Big E's bridge in command after seeing him in command of the Defiant.
