Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS*****

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

I was pleasantly surprised to see the Titan cameo. Not to mention the Shelby one. And the Gorkon. ;)
Yes, although someone unfamiliar with those novel series would mostly view them as a Riker-Troi cameo, a Shelby cameo, and a Klag cameo -- all TNG guest stars, whom we revisit many years after they appeared on the show. :)

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

Does the Shelby cameo have her as a Captain or as an Admiral?

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

^ Admiral, obviously.

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

Just checking ;)

After the mix up with Taurik and Rager, I thought that the continuity checker might have been absent for these novels.

I meant plot device, KRAD. and there must be a limit. How do They relate to the deity of the Old Testament, which AFAIR, Q has interacted with?

But seriously folks... There's always someone more powerful. That's the way the universe works.

I don't think the book actually describes them, although I guess it is not important. When you were writing the book, did you have an idea in your head of what they would look like?

Says who?

Q claimed to have met Yahweh, but he was pretty obviously taking the piss out of Picard when he did so (in Q-Squared, if memory serves), so I wouldn't trust anything he was saying at the time. :)

Something far beyond the ability of the human eye to interpret. Hell, the Q-Continuum is far beyond the ability of the human eye to interpret -- in "Death Wish," "The Q and the Grey," "'Q'uandary," and String Theory: Evolution, it had to be disguised as something humanoid minds found familiar -- so They would be even more impossible to describe in mere mortal terms...

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

I breezed through Q & A on Saturday. An excellent read that did a good job of introducing some cool new characters, saving the universe, and making me laugh out loud several times, all in less than 300 pages. Nicely done, Keith.

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

^ Why thankee very kindly, sir.

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

I might accept for your interpretation of Q's actions in Q-squared.
I still believe there are limits. If you are much more powerful than the Q, can you be distinct from the sapce-time region you inhabit?

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

Just finished it last night. I wish it had been longer (as I do with any book I enjoy) but I liked the characterization of Miranda...the security chief less so, but probably because I just don't like him quite yet.

KRAD did a great job of tying together all the Q appearances, and justified some of the actions of Q which seemed to make no sense, like why he'd be so obsessed with Picard and the Enterprise and all that.

The whole "nixing the universe because it's boring" thing reminded me a bit of the beginning of "I, Q".

One more thing, the little snippets of the stuff going on around the universe (Malon, Ferengi/Delta Quadrant/Gorkon) were pretty interesting, short as they were. I think that great characterization is just a hallmark of KRAD's.

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

I just finished the book and loved it. Not quite up there with Q-Squared and I, Q, but still pretty damn good. Naturally, I loved every single reference to Q's various appearances in the books (even the small ones such as in New Frontier: Requiem and Missing in Action). Unless I'm mistaken, there were no references to John de Lancie's comic story "The Gift" (but then it conflicts with what was later established in "Family"), nor were there any references to "Spock versus Q" (although "Ah, the good ol' days before Surak-that's when your people really knew how to party" reminded me of the first production).

I greatly appreciate how the cameos across the galaxy were disbursed across the book, taking place in the future, instead of having each scene read at once when the spatial rifts open up. By spreading out these moments, the readers get a better feel of how galactic this event is without overwhelming them or derailing the pacing of the narration. Intermingled with this was Q's various adventures seen in the shows and books and how they interconnected with the greater story, which makes the narration all the more impressive.

I love the final sequences of the book. Beginning with the various experiences the away team encounter in a different reality, which leads to Picard's jumping across the various parallel universes a la Worf in "Parallel," (which felt like a mini-preview of Myriad Universes, including a continuation of the "Tapestry" track).

One question: On page 134, Picard makes reference to officers on various locations reporting encounters with Q, one of which being on Luna. Who is that person Picard is referring to?

Aw, too bad. :( IIRC, haven't the "Spock vs. Q" stories already been alluded to in a book...?

It was tough enough working in all the prose references.

And thanks to you and everyone else for the kind words (and to Julio for the review)! :bolian:

An adventure we haven't heard about.

Yet.

:D

Cool! I was afraid I went bonkers for a moment and couldn't recall a Q story.

I look forward to this untold tale. :D

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

So did Taurik get a demotion for some reason, or was this an error? Always have to check now, after Lefler.

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

^ It was an error.

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

*runs off to check if Hell just froze over*
