Spoilers Star Trek: Prodigy General Discussion Thread

It was meant to be the finale, so I guess they’ve taken the first two seasons and called them the first two halves of season 1?

I was also under the impression that Season 1 of Prodigy will consist of only 10 episodes, but it appears that some time ago, it was decided that Season 1 will in fact have 20 episodes.
The premise that S1 would have only 10 episodes was a product of miscommunication it seems (if I'm not mistaken).

It's not uncommon for animated shows to produce a single larger block of episodes that gets released as two or more different broadcast seasons. We see this a lot with Netflix shows, where they often do something like 13-episode seasons that get released in blocks of 7 and 6 several months apart. But it's happened with other shows in the past as well. Batman: The Animated Series back in the '90s had two production seasons of 65 and 20 episodes, but their premieres were staggered over several years so that the series essentially had four broadcast seasons of 60, 10, 10, and 5 episodes. Although the "second season" aired in one week in September and one week in May, so it was more like 60, 5, 5, 10, and 5. (The new episodes were slotted in between the reruns of older episodes, so the show was airing continuously the whole time.)

So I figure the plan with Prodigy was always to do a 20-episode production season and release it as two 10-episode broadcast seasons, so the stories were designed to take place in two 10-episode arcs. Animation takes quite a long time to produce, so it can't have been changed late in the game.

That effectively amounts to about 10 live action episodes each of which lasts 40-45 mins per season.

Mind you since its a cartoon, episodes are usually shorter in duration compared to live action... but still.

True! And they have two 20 episode season orders/40 episodes total, so the first 2 seasons will be the length equivalent of 20 hour long episodes.

It would be nice if they could increase the runtime of Prodigy episodes from say 23 odd minutes to about 30 full minutes.

I know it takes a long time to set up scenes, animation, renders and post production (I work in the said field), but a lot of the stuff is also becoming automated which can make the work go faster.

It would allow the show more 'breathing room' and not quite 'rush' through some stuff.

Unfortunately, because it’s meant to be on Nickelodeon as well, it has a fairly strict time constraint to allow for the standard commercial runtime on traditional/cable network television, that ‪‪I think prevents them from having the flexibility of the other shows currently being produced that are primarily intended for streaming audiences.

The early concept art almost makes Gwyn look like an android with the line on her face and shoulder.. When they say "events in Picard will drastically affect our characters" are they talking about the synth ban?

Hm... depends on what they meant by 'events in Picard'.
There are several major events that we're familiar with in Picard:

1. Romulan Star going supernova.
2. The UFP fleet of 10 000 ships was destroyed (intended for Romulan evacuation) which was a result of Romulan secret agency programming the synths to attack and destroy Utopia Planitia - but it also caused Starfleet to withdraw its support (a decision with which Picard very much disagreed with and forced him to resign).
3. The synth ban (a result of the above event, but still technically separate as a slightly separate event in its own right).
4. Picards resignation? He's one of the biggest 'embodiments' of SF and UFP ideals (along with Janeway if you ask me)... so that could potentially resonate with the kids in a significant capacity (if the 'famed' Jean Luc Picard resigned from Starfleet... then is the Starfleet they thought of still real?) - obviously, as we learned, yes, it very much is, but Starfleet ended up with tied hands when those 10 000 ships were destroyed and I honestly don't think they thought they could do much else (time ran out effectively).
And while on a level I do agree with Picard that SF may have given up a bit quickly... on the other, losing 10 000 ships must have been a massive blow either way. All the effort etc. down the drain.

What else do we know from ST: Picard that could drastically affect Prodify characters?
