Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

She also shoots one of her underlings (whom she berates as ill-defined and unshaped) for complaining too much at the beginning of The Bounty, so she definitely has no qualms about hurting other Changelings.
Back in the old days, this would've been met with Vadic being drowned by the other changelings and turned into a solid.

I did assume that the two Starfleet guards that Vadic vaporized were actually legit, so they wouldn't try to stop her from taking Riker, but she does seem pretty crazy, and if those guards were legit then I think they would have at least objected to how Vadic was beating the crap out of Riker, so I guess they must have been like her.

The public perception of Daystrom Station just seemed to be a cover for what is in actuality a Section 31 black site. The two officers Vadic vaporised were most likely S31 agents masquerading as Starfleet personnel to maintain the illusion of Daystrom Station as a bastion for peaceful science and research.

I have my serious doubts that a Titan series is in the cards. I think if anything, Matalas is talking so much about it to keep up the pressure. Plus, I think it was Stashwick who said on twitter that he has had no meetings with the people who would be responsible for such a call yet.

While fan pressure gave us SNW, it’s a different streaming landscape now. It’s no longer about creating expensive content to drive subscribers. It’s about cutting costs and Trek ain’t cheap.
I'm leaning towards agreeing with you now. According to trekmovie.com, it seems like Alex Kurtzman wants to do mini-series and streaming movies next. Of what? Who knows.

If Rand hadn't turned her into goop, there would have been. ;)
Kirk's speech is the moral

So, you're saying it's Star Trek?
I think they're all Changelings. Not sure why Vadic kills them. She's just crazy, I guess.
Rand was taking out the competition but we still didn't get more Rand, sadly.

The speech and flag in Omega Glory were too on the nose for me to be credible even for a parallel Earth but that aside I'm still struggling to find morality in the moral. It's probably that I lack the cultural context to feel the significance of someone reading the US Constitution but I thought it was intended to integrate the invading colonialists with other inhabitants. The communists are the civilising colonialists in this scenario. If they were layering levels of cultural interference to be criticised, it's about as crass as Code of Honour when placed into the context of real world history. It does look more interesting when placed alongside the modern context of the culture war surrounding so-called white privilege, maybe, but at the time, I'm still not sure what they were trying to say. It's wrong to try and civilise 'savages', maybe?

I think the morality of the moral might be one thing that distinguishes modern Trek. Difficult choices may lead to imperfect solutions. The grey area surrounding the Maquis was very well done so Picard and Ro's heart to heart was interesting.

Assuming that all the crew of the Shrike are changelings, there is precedent for her killing her own. It maybe that whatever allows them to remain in more stable forms affects their sanity or something. I am enjoying that their exact motivations are still a mystery.

Mini-Series:
Starfleet Academy
Section 31
Titan
DS9 Follow-Up
VOY Follow-Up

Only "Titan" would go on to be something more.

TV Movies:
Disco (whatever they didn't get to during the series itself, assuming they don't totally close things off)
Picard (assuming Picard doesn't die again, Patrick Stewart will want to do one more eventually)
60th Anniversary Special (I'm calling it now)

All this and an ENT sequel?

The Omega Glory is the ultimate episode exemplifying the claim many have made that Star Trek is American imperialism in space. The episode literally ends with the aliens saluting the Stars and Stripes with Kirk giving them a proper understanding of American values and the meaning of the Constitution. The episode has no deeper meaning other than being pro-USA all the way. Best not to analyze it any further than that.

I don't know, it feels like the stuff they're all saying now is exactly what happened in the wake of Discovery Season 2. Nothing was agreed, but it was fairly apparent that the season (and Short Treks) were a backdoor pilot. I seem to recall Mount, Kurtzman, etc all saying they'd love to do something but nothing was agreed, and encouraging fans to tell CBS they wanted it.

So I don't think anyone is lying - nothing has been agreed yet, but I'd be astonished if they aren't having discussions behind the scenes and watching the fan reaction very closely.

The one caveat is that we don't yet know how the season ends. Perhaps there won't be a Titan by episode 10? But a TNG-era continuation series is an obvious no-brainer when considering future shows.

Yes, absolutely true, but it's a fine line. They need to drive subscriptions which means having content available throughout much of the year. But clearly they are cutting costs. We have Picard and Discovery ending, and nothing yet announced to replace them.

I don't think we're ever going to get year-round Trek, despite coming very close over the past couple of years, but something like SNW, LDS and PRO plus 'Star Trek Legacy' (which is a terrible title) gets most of the way there. Any additional mini-series or features (Michelle Yeoh?) will be a bonus.

I know that some people like S T D, some LD, some Prodigy, some Picard, some Short Treks, some SNW

But if they don't give Matalas to continue his work, than from 2017 to 2023 and millions of invested dollars we are only going to have 10 quality episodes. It's šteta

"We"??? When were you appointed spokesman for fandom?
Might be a royal "we."

Or a temporal duplicate.

TMP has a lot of sexist tropes, its still very fresh in my mind since I just watched the new Directors Cut on HBO last night.

Take Lieutenant Ilia. A devastatingly beautiful woman who the men fawn after and Gene has her mention explicitly a "oath of celebacy" being on record as if shes an unstoppable sex machine. Her only purpose is to offer a romantic tension with Decker and to die and then come back in a bizarre yet still sexy robodroid probe form who Decker manages to love back to being something kind of human.

Nurse Chapel is now a Doctor, but McCoy is wanting a new nurse because he thinks Chapel will now argue every diagnosis with him. Frankly Chapel is the only female character not treated in a sexist way. Uhura is more or less the same as she was in TOS..a talking computer station.

But yes..I guess it's better than silver bikini sexbots with bras that look like baked potato.
TMP has a few sexist tropes in that the principal female lead's primary purpose is as an unrequieted love sub-plot but Deltans can bang you to death and I'm not sure that qualifies as a trope? It has a lot of women manning stations, including engineers, which was a relative rarity in Trek until recently, but lacked female security guards or any female protagonists to advance the plot. Uhura actually gets more to do in this one than the other movies (except maybe VI) but it's true that much of her dialogue is rather dry, technical stuff, and they let her down big time by not letting her be the one to work with Spock to resolve the communications problem - a very odd choice. I really liked Chapel's role as the more sciency doctor but she doesn't even have a conversation with McCoy or Spock so there was a missed opportunity to give her any emotional involvement with the main cast. Rand could have popped up in engineering or at a bridge station, so another missed opportunity, presumably because it was cheaper to have an extra in shot at the engineering station.

Of course the themes in TMP are visible in Picard too. At least Worf is doing his own thing without any shuttle crash relationships on display. I really hope he has a bad ass wife who has managed to live for longer than a year as part of a celebrity power couple. I think that, considering that Picard sprouted from the male heavy TNG cast, they have done a great job of re-balancing the books with old and new characters, including the villain. Hats off to Jeri Ryan too. I think that Seven has shown that she has a ton of potential as a character without leaning on being ex-Borg. I also feel that Riker, Troi, and Worf have legs but it remains to be seen if Troi is going to be passive advisor/victim or active strategist. I loved it in /beyond when Uhura rescued herself so I am really hoping that they let Marina loose.

Is anyone else curious what happened to the E?

I know that most people associate TNG with the Enterprise-D but I feel that the Enterprise-E has kind of been forgotten!

I know since Season 2 Sovereign classes have been flying about
