Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

SNW had 3 good episodes, PIC had 10.
Disco was too dragged out, very slow and boring, and had highlights like filters that only filter known stuff and let in unknown stuff :D

Huh. I’d switch my assessment of number of good Picard season 3 and SNW season 2 episodes. But we all do have our opinions.

SNW S2

Only counting the top results for simplification, PIC S3 got an average of 9.6, while SNW got an average of 9.3.
Whoever has the time can get the full averages including all votes :D *

There were simply more great moments and fewer silly ones IMO in PIC S3 than in SNW S2.

*Update: here they are, counting all votes (popular instead of EC I guess :D):

PIC S3: 8.4, 8.0, 8.8, 9.0, 9.0, 8.7, 7.9, 8.4, 8.7, 8.9 => Average: 8.58
SNW S2: 7.7, 8.8, 8.1, 7.5, 8.3, 7.9, 9.1, 8.7, 7.8, 8.5 => Average: 8.25

No matter how you look at it, on this TrekBBS as of now, PIC wins too. ;)

The weirdest conclusion I'm seeing is that if you liked PIC more than SNW, you must have hated SNW. One can be better than the other without that other being crap :D :shrug:

I like Strange New worlds I've watched the first 2 seasons and really liked it alot. It has a Tos vibe to it and I like the crewmembers. I like seeing seeing Kirks' brother being part of Pike's crew and getting to see him develop as a character.

Not really. I'll do it right now. Andor was a better show than Picard in every conceivable way.

I disagree.

Isn't it weird how this type of thing is almost entirely subjective?

Silliness in Star Trek? Heaven forbid!

Don't get me wrong. I absolutely enjoy some silliness in Star Trek. Two of my favorite episodes of all time are DS9 "In the Cards" and "Take Me Out to the Holosuite". I'm even ok with some meta-silliniess... i'm 100% on board and wish they had just straight up used the TOS Enterprise in the new shows. I don't care if it's "too 60's". It looks awesome.

My criticism was that SNW S2 just leaned too heavily on them, especially given the truncated seasons we get now. I ENJOYED SNW S2, although slightly less than I enjoyed S1.... and i'm on the side of the divisive musical episode as being right up there with "Threshold" in "we don't talk about that" territory.

One of my biggest criticisms of Discovery is that it had been unflinchingly grimdark serious all the time. That's ALSO bad. There's an equilibrium. I think PIC handled it fairly well by not having outright gag episodes, but occasionally allowing itself to have lighter moments.

I loved both SNW S2 (apart from the super serum stuff and I thought the court episode fell flat) and PIC S3, I think it was the best year we've had in Trek for decades. Kind of weird how people absolutely rage about Picard S3 being overwhelmingly popular.

I don't think I've seen a single person upset over its popularity. Sure, there have been plenty of debates over its quality, or lack thereof, depending who you ask. But its popularity? Nah.

The only thing I've seen anyone upset about is the Cult of Personally that has been built around Terry Matalas. This segment of the fandom has chosen him as some kinda figurehead in their efforts to not only besmirch Alex Kurtzman, but to also invalidate other modern Trek series, and their fans.

That's a sentiment I'm certainly willing to push back against.

Nope, no rage here. Confusion mostly over the popularity, and definitely don't think Terry is the answer to Trek's future.

But rage? Absolutely not. I'm baffled by it, especially since the story beats are similar to Season 1, and Season 3 uses the mystery box very poorly, and introduced very unlikable characters.

The rage is more on Twitter/X.

But there you have an internecine fight between DISCOVERY vs SNW vs S31 vs PS3/Legacy proponents.

Reddit on the other hand is far more bland, as certain series are immune from any minor criticism, while others can be excoriated over nothing...

Almost everyone on Twitter suffers from main character syndrome, so best to just monitor from afar.
Oh, I refuse to engage on that platform, and have long held that position since it's inception. It is an excellent example of the knee jerk reactionism that was far more common in young adult and child discussions, rather than more appropriate dialog.

Social media has highlighted the more narcissistic tendencies of all humans.

Only when one asserts one is "THE WAY" of Trek.

I do think it's sometimes harder in an online setting to convey any sort of nuance.

I dislike Discovery. Immensely. I thought Picard was fantastic. SNW is... okay.

I'm going to naturally be more excited in discussions about Picard because -in my opinion- it's the best. In an online forum, that can easily be read as "I hate everything other than Picard and you are terrible if you like anything else"... when that's not really the case.

People tend to take inherently subjective comments as a declaration of fact. Like if I say "Discovery is garbage", that's subjective. That's what I think. You can think it's great.
