Janeway would have been the smarter choice but I guess if it had to be anybody else the son of Pavel Chekov was an interesting decision.
I have a question- In the post-credits scene, Jack unpacks a photo of Picard and Crusher in his room. You only see it for a second. They look like they’re the age of being in the TNG era- McFadden has red hair and Stewart looks younger. I can’t place it in a TNG ep though, Stewart looks like he’s wearing a suit. Anyone know if it’s from an episode or maybe a red carpet type event the actors attended?
Overall it was enjoyable except for how Picard defeated the Borg.
The Borg can never truly be defeated. A species as powerful as the Borg would never allow its species to be defeated.

"The Last Generation" should be it for stories about the Borg Collective. I'm cool with Borg offshoots like the Jurati Borg or other Borg variants, but I'm just so goddamn tired of the traditional Collective. It's played out, it's done, and it's never ever going to be as interesting or thrilling as it was in "The Best of Both Worlds." Let it go.
Or alternatively – go back to the original Borg concept. One ship, no Queen, travelling through the galaxy like warp-capable locusts. They aren't even that interested in assimilating people. Back to the "force of nature" idea where one day without warning a Cube would blot out the sun and the next thing you know whatever remains of your civilisation is back in the stone age.
Even that's played out. There are only so many versions of that story you can do. It's already a repetitive premise with diminishing returns.
Looking back I have to ask why they scooped up all the machine elements on the planets in those early episodes if all they have to do is assimilate the people to acquire the knowledge. I get that the Queen was created for the movie so that the characters could have someone to talk to, but that really diminished them as a threat because now it isn't really a collective mind. It's now the thoughts of one individual giving orders to her drones . First Contact would have worked just fine if they had stuck to that original concept.Or alternatively – go back to the original Borg concept. I thought the season 3 was working fine until they shoehorned the Borg Queen into it. For me it was the only part of that entire season that was a negative. But yeah, the First Contact/Voyager-era Borg with an Evil Queen obsessed with whatever captain we happen to be following at that particular moment needs to go away now. It's done.

I’m glad they used Chekov. At least they gave us something about him post Generations. Now we know he had a kid. Janeway we’ve seen post Voyager in Prodigy so wasn’t needed here.
