Yeah, despite the initial reaction being "Farpoint", their look and quantity offer enough differences do rule out a direct "Farpoint" connection - and I have to concede that Trek was doing space lifeform weirdness, something that seems easier to swallow in the 1960s but it is as iconic to the franchise as the red/gold/blue uniforms are (even if I balked in 1987, after how the feature films changed and tidied things up to move forward and more consistency with as, in the process, the movie uniforms in TWOK-onward took out the "red shirt means target practice" trope that became "gold shirt" soon enough for TNG.)
