It always made sense from the trailers that that ship needed to be a good guy ship. Bad guys wouldn’t take a 200 year old ship to do bad things with.

Indeed, but I didn't say that. I said her drug history makes her an unreliable narrator when talking about what happened in the past.

I don't know what issues she might've had (or might not have had) before, but it's possible Picard was a pillar for her. It seems that way. Or she wouldn't have descended to the extent it looks like she has if he wasn't.

We got backstory in The Last Great Hope. No spoilers, but suffice it to say that even before the end of her career the evacuation mission had been extraordinarily costly for her at a personal level. After the attack on Mars, she imploded.

Picard is also shown as having undergone terrible disillusionment himself, with the politics of two empires deeply undermining his sense of the fundamental goodness of people. His resignation came at a point when he had lost that faith, leaving him not knowing what to do next.

I do not think The Last Good Hope is a necessary read to get the show. It does provide more detail.

Star Trek doesn't have this option really due to its stated noncanon status of all tie ins.

They could change that at will. Probably won't, but they could.

I assumed that the BOP is in service because the Romulans pulled every ship available, including out of mothballs, to transport as many people as possible.
