Laris is easily the best character so far. I would prefer she and Zhaban be on the ship instead of looking after the grapes. But IMDB only lists her in 3 episodes and Zhaban in 4 this season. That's disappointing.
I strongly agree. They're both great characters and clearly quite talented. Those two could easily watch Picard's back for the duration of the mission, and it would be helpful to have some Romulans along, in general, to provide Picard with some cultural insight along the way, of why things are and how to work around them. A lost opportunity there...

Gotta agree. I'm really not sold on Rios or Musiker yet. Jurati seems pretty fun and interesting, Zhaban is solid and Laris is pure gold.

That to me is a misreading of that scene - she is "unhinged" *because* of what happened to her, it did not happen to her because she was unhinged.

Also her "firing" is fairly straight forward - you need a scapegoat - picard resigned and she carried the can.
It would have been better to say that, despite the resignation of Picard, she decided to carry on with her alternative plan for saving the Romulans and so they decided to court martial her, unless she resigned. So she did. Or they just involuntarily discharged her because of this.

It may be that they are living on a chateau well away from Romulan space for a reason, perhaps their presence would just make things worse for Picard.

They probably have their own enemies and dont want to complicate matters further.

Yeah, but she got the notice she was fired during the conversation with Picard, not after talking to them herself.

Not exactly. As I recall, she got a notice to report to the CNC and jumped to the conclusion that, "Oh, great, I'm going to get fired."

She didn't literally received a text informing her she had been fired. She was just assuming the worst.

Who knows. That may have become a self-fulfilling prophecy. If she goes into the meeting with a chip on her shoulder, assuming that her career is over . . . .

As we saw in the episode she already assumed it was going to be bad news.

She went in there pretty hot I think, assuming the worst and may not have done herself any favors at all.

Beaten to the punch above by mere moments...

With the demonstration of their fighting skills (do all Romulans know how to take out trained Zhat Vash operators?) I'd have taken them to be a pair of exiled Tal Shiar.

Oh, I forgot to mention: minus one point for not showing the damn dog again!

Seriously, given how prominently Number One was featured in the promos and poster, how come he only appears in the first ep?
In Wheaton's after-show, I think it was Chabon who mentioned that they had problems dealing with it. It was young and very friendly with the whole crew (read - no discipline) and was difficult to get good shots with it. I doubt we'll ever see him again.

Animals are always tricky to act alongside, plus there was no real in universe reason to take him.

Heh...
Because Number 1 was a Doggie Diva.

Stewart said in an interview that the dog was lovely, but not the best actor to work with.
They had two, BTW.
The second was better, but still not up to the challenge of modern TV filming.
They were both Rescues.
;)

These opening episodes feel like the first 15 minutes of a two-hour movie stretched into three 40 minute parts. Like the a really long Act One (three-act structure not TV acts). Feels like Picard is building his fellowship in what might be Lord of the Borg. :nyah:

Lariss' device only showed what occurred before the actual attack in the apartment.
They see Dahj sitting on the couch with her BF.[...]
God I hate this kind of of crap "magic" tech. It might as well be spell cast by Harry Potter.

On the larger topic...

I read a lot of scripts and my issue with this show is the same I level at may streaming series: what they call in the industry "Netflix bloat". Unshackled from the hard boundaries of telling stories within the specific time limitations of an episode the writers end up dragging the show out like a soap opera. There's tons of setup and overlong scenes to drag the viewers along because they're saving all the big stuff for the later episodes.

This fosters an overuse of the "poor communication kills" trope where characters by rights ought to say things which would clarify the situation for the other characters but they don't because the writers are leaving too much unsaid. For instance, plenty of allusions to what was at stake if the evacuation didn't happen, but we've not yet heard anything concrete about what did happen to the Romulan Empire and to the likely countless refugees from its demise.

I'm sure we'll get the answers eventually, but we should have more answers already if modern shows weren't all about mystery boxes.

But you can be when your boss finds out your using drugs to function.
But that's NOT how the scene was played out in the episode:

- Picard resigns...
- As Picard is telling her this she gets summoned to the CINC's office...
- As she's leaving she says: "Great...You resign...I get fired..." and walks off
^^^
The impication DEFINITELY was: "She was called to the CINC's office and the CINC informed her she was discharged from Star Fleet. The CINC pretty much took the action immeadiatly after Picard resigned.

Hell, I wish instead of seeing Picard lament over the fact they accept his resignation (the third time they did such a scene - across the first 3 episodes - where the focus is: "Heylook! Yes, Picard actually resigned... - yeah, I'm not sure I would have recalled that particular plot detail without yet another scene to remind me) I would have rather seen more focus on WHAT happened to Raffi (IE - Maybe show the final meeting with the CINC; but yeah can't have any real backstory openly displayed for background characters as this is STAR TREK: PICARD; where even in a flashback that's supposed to focus on the new character now introduced to the audience we still get Patrick Stewart/Picard in the center spotlight again.)

Not for nothing, but we do still have Seven more episodes to go.

There may be another 'flashback' in which it gets explained more.
(or not)
