I do sort of wonder why Raffi is growing her own drugs. I mean, with a replicator, isn't the drug trade basically over? Maybe there are replicator "controls" stopping creating dangerous substances from being made, but presumably it's easier to try and circumvent those than to try and get the "real shit."

Maybe Syntho-Weed just doesn't give the same high. ;)

If there hadn't been the hype beforehand, I would have had no idea that guy in the cube was Hugh. I think Soji mentions his name in passing but his entrance has no fanfare whatsoever.

It would actually be unrealistic if Picard recognized him at first glance because he'd be more like, "Ok, who are you again?" unless Hugh introduces himself by name.

I hope that when Picard meets Hugh he gets kinda a warm welcome, because the "Hey asshole, where have you been?" meetups are going to get tiresome/redundant after awhile.

OR

Hugh: "Hey LOCUTUS! -- Long time no see Bro! What's it been...30 years? Hey hows Geordi and that Android of your doing??!!"

Didn't seem like she had a whole lot of other projects going on. It probably gave her something to do, and cut down on the replicator energy she uses.

Picard: Yep 30 years. And the android? He's dead, Hugh.

We do know that Troi gives Picard a hug at least.

So, Raffi and possibly Hugh. This show is just a long string of characters chewing Picard out for never even bothering to friend them on Subspacebook.

Yup, totally agree. Hugh is unrecognizable from how we last saw him and I don't know Jonathan del Arco well enough that I'd say "Wow, Hugh!" if there hadn't been all that pre-release hype. And, yeah, Soji says his name in a tossed-off way after we've already spent several minutes with him.

They already gave us the Trill newbie character explicitly for the purpose of dropping in some exposition, they should have used her to give us a proper "intro" to Hugh.

Interesting that Discovery isn’t the only ship that Starfleet has officially erased from history :p
Makes me wonder what it was up to and whether or not it will have an impact on the shows plot.

Thing is, it isn't real.
But it should endeavour to feel real. To some 'real' seems to be 'like now' which to me seems missing the point of setting the show in the future...
And nothing dates sci-fi quicker than made up language.
Using too contemporary language dates it fast too. And there's no need for much made up expressions besides technical terms. Just avoid modern slang. TNG managed this just fine.

Because it's possible to get carried away with the whole utopian thing. Ideally, Trek should be optimistic and idealistic, but still keep one foot firmly on the ground, rooted in the harsher realities of life. IMHO.

Personally, I have no problem with that, as the entire UFP being nothing but a massive "I'd like to buy the world a Coke"-esque kumbaya-singing planned community is dull and undramatic. We've seen other characters like Bashir's dad who are just utter losers.

What I have a problem with in Raffi's case is that she was "fired" by Starfleet simply due to her association with Picard, which is just wildly unrealistic. It would have been better if she resigned in solidarity only then for her to realize her life was nothing without Starfleet and that she struggled for years afterwards to make something of herself, to no avail.

I looked it up, she was a Lieutenant commander and his XO on the USS Verity.

A lot of people in Starfleet get promoted to Captain just because they put in their time, but they don't have the chutzpah to command a ship or a starbase.

I didn't read the comics and have no intention of doing so, but it annoys me that Picard was ever the captain of another ship. He should have just stayed on the E-E the entire time and, if he got promoted to admiral, swiped the Enterprise back from whoever had it when he wanted to, James T. Kirk-style.

We know that Raffi is an addict. Perhaps her addiction goes back even to those days, but Picard needed her services. When Picard resigned, she had no one to protect her status in the fleet.

The nukes of World War III probably took care of a lot of people's wealth. Considering a lot of wealth is merely paper/digital.

That's not what Picard said. What he said in substance was that in the 24th century they no longer pursued the acquisition of wealth. This was misleading, if not dishonest, as Picard is by any standards a very wealthy man and his friend (I forget the name) isn't.
So as I said the wealthy man could still have been so, depending on his investments, while Picard implied that he wasn't.

We shouldn't have to invent our own explanations to paper over weak writing.
