STAR TREK: PHASE II Recasts Kirk

Details aside, I think MikeH92467's walkaway is that the success of one Trek fan-film production is not reliant on the failure of the others; it isn't a zero sum game and it's actually possible for both Star Trek Phase II and Star Trek Continues productions to do well and become (or remain) successful--despite the existence of other fan productions.

...The situation with STC kinda reminds me of the situation when some of the James Bond scripts fell into public domain and Sean Connery made "Never say 'Never' Again" at the same time that Roger Moore made one of his "official" Bond films...
That's an inapt comparison, as neither group actually has the rights to use Star Trek. Furthermore, you're factually incorrect on the Bond situation, as nothing lapsed into the public domain.

Never Say Never Again had its origins in the early 60s when Bond creator Ian Fleming worked with Kevin McClory and Jack Whittingham on a potential Bond script. When that fell through Fleming turned it into the novel Thunderball. This resulted in a lawsuit from McClory. The long and short of it was McClory received screen rights to the Thunderball story some years after the film came out. McClory exercised those rights in order to make Never Say Never Again.

More details here on wikipedia (link) and here on the blog G-BLATT's dreams (link).

Gee...guess you told me! :) Seriously, that is a great example of just how messy copyrights and screen rights can become. You are correct that the comparison is not really spot on, but Greg does get my gist. This is not a zero sum game and we as consumers may actually benefit without any real loss to either company.

Absolutely...the more well-produced Trek, the better!

Oh and let's face it, having Kirk played by a professional actor who is handsome, younger than STC's Kirk by 20 years, and a Shatner look alike, certainly is a one up on that other production. But who cares?
Not knowing anyone involved personally and with respect to all parties:
1. I don't personally see being younger as necessarily a benefit, just a different choice on how to present the character. I generally prefer to think of Kirk as a mature man.
2. He looks more like Garret Dillahunt than Shatner.
3. I've been hearing Vic's voice in my cartoons since I was in footie pajamas. I think that constitutes professional.

That being said, this new fellow seems plenty capable and I look forward to his performance.

LOL? How is that rude?

How much money do you make at your job?

The question was NOT how much, only if he was getting paid in general.

Tom:

Thanks for your interest in some of the behind-the-scenes details of our production.

Respectfully (and predictably), our production will not be disclosing the nature of its compensation arrangements with its cast and crew members. But as a SAG-AFTRA Signatory, we are indeed bound by the "New Media" guild rules. So you can be guided by those rules.

Your question about whether Mr. Brian Gross is receiving any compensation from Retro Films Studio for his services should probably be addressed to Mr. Gross himself; he can reveal to you the specifics or the generalities of his compensation arrangements with us if he so chooses. (I'm confident that, professionally, it's actually not our place to do so.)

Just as you did with some of the details regarding our "Kitumba" episode, feel free to ask questions; we're always interested to know what aspects of our production are of interest to our fans and viewers. Of course, we are perfectly willing and able to decline to answer when the information is something we probably should not disclose.

Thanks Greg,

I tend to be pretty straght forward sometimes. LOL

That's why we love you.

GSchnitzer, as always, you handle us with your usual aplomb. ;)

Ever consider a position as President's Press Secretary?

Cheers! :):techman:

Jim:

Thanks for your kind comments.

Not everyone on our team agrees with my PR style. It's been called "idiotic," "ridiculous," and "PC BS." But your comments mean a lot to me and are a comfort. Thank you.

No matter what you think of his acting, James is an excellent producer and leader. He will now be able to concentrate more on that role and bring P2 even up to a higher standard than it was before. :)

With PII having some money issues I bet a lot of this has to do with having Cawley concentrate on making more money so that he can better help fund PII. That's sorta been implied in this thread at times but I bet this has as much if not more to do with this. Even though I liked how he's played the role the overall production is why we all like PII. Hopefully this decision will be better for PII overall.

You're very welcome!

I just envy your "long fuse". I have one as well...but at the end of it is the powderkeg...as some here can attest to, i.e. the previous (closed) AJAX thread...sometimes you just gotta lower the boom, for everyone's sake.

Hmm..."Long Fuse Envy"...I'm sure someone will have fun with that...
