"Star Trek" over $100 million today

I'm still waiting to see that they have indeed spent 150 mil on marketing.

Me too. I don't buy this.

As for the Golden Compass...that film was really, really, ridiculously bad. As in horribly bad. As in fucking, mind-numbingly bad.

I'm going to see ST again in a couple of hours. I think it's doing great, and it'll go on doing great.

I think boxofficemojo is right and we see a 60% dip this weekend. I hope its not that big, but I fear it will be.

Well, predictions on the high end were never over 60-70 million at the most optimistic, so Star Trek has overperformed expectations.

I think A&D can coexist with ST, and both can get 50+ million.

If that happens, will you get off your negative horse?

If Trek finishes the 3 day weekend with more than 45 Mil I will stop being so negative. I can guarantee no more negative nancy posts if that happens.

Remember, I want that to happen, I loved the movie!!!

After only one week of release, Star Trek has become the 7th highest grossing movie of 2009 and should pass The Watchmen this weekend.

I think we'll have an idea tomorrow if it will make more than 40mil after the weekend by the numbers it will produce tonight.

Okay then--I'll hold you to that... :)

T4 is actually tracking to open slightly behind Night at the Museum 2, which I find hysterical. And early reviews have been somewhat unkind.

I think the greatest thing about Star Trek's box office is that the people that spent the $150 million (paramount, JJ, etc.) are happy with the gross. And the people that get paid to spend hours analyzing and predicting this stuff are also happy with the numbers.

Three cheers for Trek!!

Yeah, I wasn't getting into the quality of the movie; just pointing out that a movie has to make WAY more than just its budget to actually make back its money (which some people just don't get). Star Trek will be successful since its on track to be successful.

Last I heard, NATM2 was tracking in the 80 million range for 4 days; while T4 was tracking in the 110 million range for its 5 day opening.

Wait hold on. This movie is a flop! A total ridiculous flop. Pancakes hitting the floor don't flop this hard. If I were Paramount I would have thrown JJ out the window on Thursday, along with the 1967 Corvette, little Kirk, and that bloody Jellyfish. This movie makes Nemesis failure look like Will Wheaton on steroids. I hope you guys now realize the only way we can make a successful Trek is to pander to the loyal Trek fandom!

Link? I see nothing on the page.

to help your fears, with some links and predictions:

Boxofficereport: 43 million
http://boxoffice.com/featured_stories/2009/05/updated-weekend-predictions-9.php

Boxofficeguru: 37 million
http://www.boxofficeguru.com/weekend.htm

Boxofficeprophet: 45 million (and only 2 away from beating A&D)
http://www.boxofficeprophets.com/column/index.cfm?columnID=11617

Lees Movie Info: 38 Million
http://leesmovieinfo.com/

So as you see the average drop is around 40 million, which is a 45-47% drop.

A few items:

- Star Trek was at just uder $142 after Wednesday night in World-Wide + Domestic BO...holding steady through the week. I expect a between 40-50 million this next weekend while A&D tanks and comes in second (to Trek), due to negative reviews and a complete absence of excitment from people throughout the country.

-Viacom does not release specific marketing numbers (even to their investors) about any of their films. Any numbers are mere speculation. Judging by how they have marketed in the past compared to how they've marketed Trek, I'd say the marketing budget was around $50 million. This, of course, is completely arbitrary.

- The percentage that theater owners receive from tickets sales varies by film and the amount of time the film has been in release. Most start out (usually the first 2 weekends) with the studios receiving around 80% of the price of each ticket. (This is why you sometimes see signs about "No reduced ticket coupons for X movie" at the theater on most blockbusters.) By the end of the run (8-12 weeks out) that percentage shrinks to around 40%.

The BO numbers are from boxofficemojo.com & the theater info is from a friend of mine that actually owns a movie theater. The marketing numbers are my own fabrication!

That IS incredible!!!! It's first week alone it made around $72.5 million! Now it's at the $100 million mark! That speaks volumes..especially for a Trek movie!!! :D

What?

I think that the only movie that knocks ST off the top rung is T4. I see ST going from number 1 this coming weekend to number 3 or 4 the following weekend. This movie will easily make $400 million domestic + world-wide BO. (Heck it's about 36% of the way there after 6 days.) THAT would be an unqualified success...to heck with the marketing budget!

If you had been a part of the other threads you would understand. I was taking one for the team.

The only way these threads are exciting is if they include the word "flop."
