This movie should have passed 100 Million Domestic on Monday. I fear this coming weekend.

No offense, but you have no idea what you are talking about.

If the film drops around 50% (which is the norm) it will be around $140-$145 million by Sunday night.

The film looks to be on it's way to an over $200 million domestic take.

Loved Joe V Volcano :D

And Big!

Speaking of great comedic actors, is there any way to work Bill Murray into the Star Trek universe? :D
Wasn't there a rumer back when alien ressurection was in post-production that the producers were trying to get Murray to be one the the doc's who interacted with weaver, but he declined because he hated the script or something?

Star Trek will probably pull in around 35 million dollars this weekend, which will be just fine.
I'm guessing $40ish million, which is a sub-50% drop...

If this thing drops less than 50 percent then Paramount Pictures should just change their name to "Star Trek, Inc." I don't think that'll happen.

Be real nice if it does, though.
Yeah. I know I'm being optimistic, but I thought I was being optimistic when I guessed it would open at $60 million a couple months ago.

You have to wonder why studios even bother making films when people on here point out that its so hard to make a profit.

Among other reasons because they know how much movies really cost them to produce and distribute, and they know how much money they really make from films that "fail to turn a profit." ;)

Star Trek has already made its money back. It made $ 141,000,000 worldwide so far. With this weekend it will make even more, so Paramount will def make a profit on this movie

50% is only normal for films like Iron Man and Batman Begins. We do not know if we can count ST with them yet.

The film is on pace for 197 Million not way over 200.

Does merchandise and stuff count towards the total profit? Cause you know Star trek always sells alot of shit with the movie...Models, shirts, phasers, action figures...ect...
And I also believe everyone is forgetting that the studios make money when they sell the rights on tv and HBO and shit...

And that's just the box office take. There's still all the merch, the toys, the broadcast sales, various ancillary rights (Pocket Books, IDW, etc), and the all mighty DVD sales. Even the hardcore haters will buy this thing, just to get their nit-picking precise. They can count on the entire fanbase to purchase the DVD plus all the new fans.

They're going to make a nice profit off this.

Box office watchers said Angels & Demons, which will open in 3,527 theaters in the U.S. and Canada, is still expected to be No. 1 at the box office this weekend, despite competition.

"Star Trek does seem to have a lot of momentum, but the question is how much of that first weekend was fan driven and how far could it fall," said Brandon Gray, president of tracking firm Box Office Mojo.

:techman:

I hear that the reviews for "Angels & Demons" are not so great.
I wouldn't worry about it so much.

Da Vinci Code was 24% on RT; A&D is in the 50% range.

Bad reviews didn't effect DVC that much ($217 million domestic), so it will be interesting to see what A&D does.

It's tracking in the mid-$50 million range right now, which is still a darn good amount.

Another thing to consider is the secondary effects of the movie, things like the TNG, DS9, TOS, VOY, and ENT DVD sales that have probably spiked since this new movie came out

Considering production + marketing costs, the film needs to get to at least $300 million worldwide to break even. This is ignoring all other sources of revenue though.

Case in point: "The Golden Compass" had a production cost of $180 million. It made $370 million worldwide, but was considered a failure and the sequel was cancelled.

Those profits technically go to CBS now since they have the rights to all Trek TV-related material.
