Turkana IV was set up after the Federation started, right? (Do we know one way or the other?)

I liked the a-plot with Boimler, Mariner and the evil computer a lot. Especially that Boimler was in control the whole time. It wasn’t just “Mariner to the rescue”.

But the b-plot was too much of a twist on the Troi’s.

Combs as usual was fantastic.

Mariner wants to pretend it never happened and go back to Boimler being her bumbling useless sidekick. This episode basically shatters that possibility forever.

Forever's a mighty long time, as His Royal Badness once said. If TPTB want to push the reset button and make Boimler bumbling and useless again, they can and will. Also, it should be pointed out both in story and from our perspective as viewers, this only works because Mariner and the computer both think Boimler might be bumbling and useless. If this were a plot that was happening on TNG, it wouldn't work very well because we generally know any of the main crew, recurring crew etc. is not stupid enough to be duped by the computer.

we don’t.

The whole Hysperian royal succession story re-frames the question of bodily autonomy, doesn't it?
well, even today the members of royal families hardly have much freedom on who they marry abs what they want to do with their life. See all the recent fuzz with the UK one or the one some 10 years ago with the Japanese one.

Someone mentioned earlier in this thread that Billups "changed color."

Serious question, I am color-blind (strong protanomaly, red/green issues), did Billups's skin change colour? What scene was it in? What was the dramatic or narrative implication? If you know what this refers to, please help me out. I watched the episode 3 times and I did not notice this.

Thanks

I would be surprised if the Federation had an active absolute monarchy as a member. Other than Ardana, has there been any UFP members depicted with anything other than something like a republic/democracy with full adult franchise?

Vulcan was possibly theocratic. We never get a lot of non religious details from Vulcan so it's hard to know

Andoria might have had an autocracy with less-than-ideal democratic principles before the founding of the Federation but is likely a full democracy by the 24th century. "Imperial Guard" doesn't exactly denote a democratic, egalitarian republic.

Have you noticed Mariner's boots soles?
They look pretty cool :)

Well we know the Federation doesn't let caste societies into its ranks from DS9.

However, the Federation is also meant to be based on the UN and not a US style democracy.

My inclination is that they probably have a Parliamentary democracy but said democracy supports the Queen with actual power of some sort.

We don’t know how much power the queen/king actually has.
It might as well be like modern monarchies (or the Klingon empire!€, where they are mostly figureheads.
