I think the show should definitely include a queer character at some point. No reason not to. The four main are straight and so is Ransom and Freeman.

That leaves the Cat Lady, Security Officer, and the Chief Engineer as possible revelations.

Not every show needs to have a heterosexual in it. It’s not like there’s a quota they need to follow

*burn*

The best advice I ever got a writer regarding diversity was, "Why not include it?'

Mariner has been my favorite character up to this point, but I really didn't care for her in this one.

I really didn't care much for the first half of this episode at all.

I had hoped that the portrayal of Freeman as an incompetent Captain last week was an aberration, but they seem to be doubling down on it and expanding it to include captains of other California class ships.

Tendi and Boimler were also pretty obnoxious.

The sci-fi premise was pretty interesting, although the ship appeared to be a sleeper ship rather than a generational ship.

The second half of the episode was more enjoyable, it picked up a lot once the ship started transforming.

The show has the potential to be both a great comedy and great Star Trek, but right now it's neither.

The show's biggest weakness is that it goes too far with the incompetance because, yes, it's supposed to be the worst ship in the fleet but it's FUNNIER when someone like Ransom is actually incredibly AWESOME at his job in a ridiculous situation versus incredibly BAD at it.

Mariner is funniest when she's hyper competent and not when she's a toddler.

It applies to everyone really, including Boimler.

Even with her mother and father you'd think Admiral SEN-sors could take action, her behavior was off the scale this week.

The writer needed a little tweak here where Freeman said something like:

Freeman: Sorry, the Ensign was affected by a virus that prevents her from holding back her slightest opinions.

Durango: Oh, I hate when that happens.

Ransom: *whispers* Was she?

Doctor: No.

One thing this episode showed us is it's not common knowledge that Mariner is Freeman's daughter. I mean, Ransom didn't even know.

Ransom should know, as he’s supposed to know his crew. I supposed Hes as good as Kirk when it comes to learning about their families.

That's the joke though. Rutherford having no personality and just being a cheerful engineer who likes to work is lampshading all of the characters like this - such as Geordi - in the past.

Giving a character no personality is a terrible "joke", then. So far, he's completely useless and it certainly isn't in a "funny" way or in any way that can be considered deliberate.

The joke about "I like doing boring jobs" is already being handled by Boimler, and "enthusiasm" is being done by Tendi much better. So giving him the same traits already used by other characters is an incredible waste of a character.

So far, the character has no reason to exist. Almost no personality, point of view or comic engine beyond "nice guy." Awful.

It seems like people are running out of things to hate so they’re looking in every crevice.

I don't have to look far at all to see one of the four "main" characters. He's right in front of me and he's terrible.

Rutherford led the B-stories in the first two episodes, this week it was Tendi's time (and would it have not been Tendi's time, we certainly would have the same complaints about her) and to be honest, right now, I know more about Rutherford than I knew about Worf until 'Heart of Glory'. In way less screentime.

I feel sometimes people forget how ensemble shows work

Just because he was the lead in the B stories doesn't mean those were good or interesting or that the character popped in any way.

Sometimes I feel people forget how good TV shows work.

Every character has a distinct point of view and a purpose so they enhance the show, episode or even scene with their presence, even if they're not the focus.

It's because he's a cyborg isn't it?

Yes!

And, other than the press materials, there's nothing whatsoever in the show that suggests the Cerritos is the "worst ship in the fleet." It's just a regular ship, doing important, if not entirely glamorous, duties.

What this episode did right was surprise us by saying that Mariner actually DID do the reading because she is a good officer at heart and, when push came to shove, she and her mother worked well together.

What this episode did poorly was having her be SOO obnoxious in that opening scene that her mother should have literally thrown her in the brig.

Look at early seasons of "Archer." While Archer himself makes plenty of mistakes and says stupid things, he's also incredibly literate and worldly and also kicks major ass as a spy when needed. Having him be incompetent in that regard would have resulted in a far dumber show.
