Anyway, general episode thoughts:
  • As with the last couple of episodes, I thought that it worked well as light drama, but not really as comedy. There were sections that were "cute" or "mirthful" enough to make me smile, but there really wasn't anything worth laughing at.
  • I enjoyed that they mixed up the dynamics of the characters a bit, with Mariner paired up with Captain Freeman through most of the episode, and Tendi off doing her own thing with the "spiritual ascension" guy. It meant there wasn't much for Boimler and Rutherford to do this time around, but that was fine.
  • I'm really liking how the series is leaning into the "workplace drama" aspect of Berman Trek which has otherwise been lost. It was always semi-ridiculous on TNG they went from ship-threatening crisis to poetry readings in Ten Forward, and the surreal aspect of everyday life on a Federation vessel when not in crisis is absolutely highlighted here.
  • I agree they could have done a bit better in terms of characterizing the Tellarite captain and why he chose to fuck up. That said, we need to keep in mind that the focus of the episodes is not suppsoed to be the shipwide crises dealt with by the bridge crew. It's always supposed to be focused on one or more of the ensigns. We can presume something deeper happened off camera I suppose.
  • I am mildly concerned with how the episode ended bumping Mariner back down to ensign. Mostly because this is really the first time the series has suggested to me use of a "reset button." While it would immediately blow up the initial premise of the show, it would have been interesting if they left Mariner as a Lieutenant for at least a few episodes.

The Orion girl really got on my nerves in this episode but the payoff with "The Ascension" was funny enough to warrant her behavior. Based on that, the Tellarite Captain and the Berman Era-level crisis affecting both ships I gave this one a 7.

Good
- Partnering with another Starfleet ship to tow a mysterious alien ship and then something goes awry felt like a very TNG episode idea. I also appreciated the scifi elements of an alien generations ship and the "genesis goo". If you strip away the humor, Lower Decks actually has some good Trek ideas.
- I like the ascension plot too. The description of ascension was straight out of Stargate. I also liked that the lieutenant reaches ascension when he was willing to sacrifice himself to save others. That also reminded me of Stargate when Daniel ascends when he sacrificed himself save others. I also liked the subversion of expectations at the end when we see what ascension is really like and it is not pleasant. Lower Decks seems to do a lot of subversion of expectations like when when we thought that Rutherford's department head was going to mad but was actually happy when Rutherford wanted to leave.
- I also liked seeing a bit more of the dynamics between Mariner and her mom. It was nice seeing them bond at the end.
- It had some good jokes. The "sens-oar" joke was fun. I also related to the boring staff meetings when the engineer is arguing over the chairs. I've been in staff meetings like that in real life.

Bad
- Mariner's ADHD was really dialed up to a 12 in this episode and it got really annoying.
- I find the episode title to be very cringe-worthy.

Yes, I saw two guys looking at each other. It's not really representation of a particularly notable quality in 2020. Easily edited out. This is Star Trek, not Star Wars. Where's my Culber at?

We’ve had about 90 minutes of screen time, thus far. Why the rush?

As for Culber, we didn’t find out that he and Stamet’s were together until about the end of the 5th episode, no? 33% of the way into the season, and 4-5 hours of content.

I will say just because we know that all of the four main ensigns are attracted to the opposite sex, it doesn't mean that any or all of them couldnt be bi.

As to the bridge crew, we don't really know anything about the proclivities of Shaxs and T'ana yet.

Not every show needs to have a homosexual in it. It’s not like there’s a quota they need to follow

I know Trek was late to the table, fár too late.... But I think since Sulu in Beyond, to Stamets and Culber, to Tig, to Seven and Raffi, Trek is making true efforts..! You can bet on it LDS will not leave this out..!
I'll give you Stamets and Culber, cannot coment on the other two (Kelvin/ ENT?), but I don't count Seven and Raffi yet. Yes, they probably WILL count next season, but right now, they're hardly anything more than queerbaiting. So yeah, I've been a bit disappointed in that regard too, as they've felt the need to do a lot of straight stuff/ allusions from ep 1 (why the rush?).

Anyway, I haven't seen this episode yet, just peeking a bit, so I'll bow out until I have. *waving*

I officially hate Mariner now. The yawning is just way too annoying :scream::mad:
Punishment by skipping-a-rank-promotion XD
Leafblowers are still a thing -.- :ack::barf2:
What the hell was that ascension thing? Seemed a bit like V'Ger's ascension XD
New ship class coming next week: USS Vancouver

Do you honestly not know what ascension is?
