Prime example of childish humor. Character psychoticly flails around Klingon sword until accidently carving out a chunk of a co-worker's leg she just met. Could you see Tom doing that to Harry?
Actually, the dialog closer to the end specifically mentioned they’ve known each other for a year. If you’ve ever lived in a freshman college dorm, you’d know that people do a lot worse to each other who’ve only just recently met for a couple of months, so... :shrug:
 
The problem isn't that it's different. Adults aren't this childish. "The warp core is soooo kewl!" I expect this from a child, not a grown man. My objections are entitely on the childiah humour, everything else, I was OK with. Oh, and they ripped off 28 Days Later with the rage virus.

Rick and Morty is better.
I can tell you that you could find similar reactions in adults regarding the engine of their cars.

Take your favorite thing, hobby etc. and go see it in person..
There's an airplane musieum between Tampa and Orlando in Florida, Loads of stuff, went there, mouth was a gap the whole time, went in back, they had a Merlin engine for the P-51 STILL IN THE CAN it was shipped in.. I had moist shorts afterwards..
He may be a warp engine buff.. and like Scotty likes looking at pinup warp engines in journals :)
