Star Trek: Intrepid resumes production

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who took the time to watch. I'm both happy and surprised everyone seems to be enjoying it so far. :)

It was fun to watch. You guys should be proud of the work you accomplished.
Thanks again, Bill. For the record, we are proud of everything we've produced so far, but we're also aware that our work isn't perfect. :)

I really am happy to see people enjoying it, especially a number of people whose opinions I value. DCR's comment that it made him think was particularly nice, and meant a lot to me.

I also wanted to mention how helpful Maurice was during the editing of this piece. While I didn't take on all of his suggestions, there probably isn't a cut in the entire thing that wasn't in some way informed by his feedback.

One cut I didn't make, that Maurice suggested, was the "new underwear" line. While I don't think the tone quite fitted the moment, I just didn't want to take that little piece of business from the actors. :)

Nicely done. Compliments to you and all the crew! Your work is paying off and I'm hoping you can pull off your 50th anniversary tribute:techman:

Now that I've had a chance to look at it again, a couple of quibbles: I thought a couple of edits were a bit clunky. That is to say, I noticed them. That only happened a couple of times. At 1:23 the cutaway to the Dr and back distracted me. The quick sequence at 2:00 where the unfortunate wrong place/wrong time scientist was revived (I think) made me go "huh"? That said, it should also be said that I went back and LOOKED for things to criticize. That's all from someone who is neither ignorant nor expert in video production, so take them with however many grains of salt you wish.

There was much more to praise. The editing overall was vastly improved and the use of dissolves and fade outs/fade ins shows growing technical skill. Also the work you've been doing on sound is very noticeable...to the point of NOT being noticeable. I enjoyed the acting performances as well. Everyone seems comfortable and I really enjoyed the Faraday character. It was a nice twist to have an antagonist who was captured but knew it wouldn't matter.

Keep going!

Reaction shots like the first one you reference aren't all that unusual, though I'd agree it could have been smoother. That said, it's really just there because I literally had no other way of cutting that scene, and needed something to cover what would have been an obvious jumpcut.

The second point you mention is a bit more complex. Originally, that quick scene wasn't in it at all. It's actually just created from cut footage from the previous scene to try and firm up the narrative a bit. I agree it doesn't really work, but the implication is that this was where Farraday entered and used the gene therapy. She comes in after the Starfleet crew have left the dome and injects the unconscious astronomer. So actually they were in the right place, they just had the wrong person at the wrong time.

The reason the clip cuts so quickly, in case you're wondering, is if I left it any longer it would have been obvious the character using the hypo wasn't Farraday. And that is wasn't even a hypo. :)

Had it been practical, we would have gone back and shot that scene as a pick up with the actor playing Farraday, and actually shown her and the hypo. Instead, we had to settle for just the sound effect.

Anyway, thanks for the kind words. I'm pretty happy with it for the most part. I wish we'd had more time to get some more footage, but as always, it is what it is. We'll take what we learned here and apply it to the next one. :)

You're ability to learn from your experiences and apply the advice of real experts like Maurice is something I admire greatly!

What I really like is how much you focus on things like story and pacing. Your films may be short, but they feel like a complete story.

Agreed. I've always found the writing on Intrepid to be excellent.

Thanks guys. :)

I've always believed story is important, and that should be focussed on before anything else. I don't always do it justice, but I try. :)

Maurice deserves a lot of credit for any pacing in my editing, he's taught me a lot, even if I can't always manage to put it into practise.

Good material is easier to work with.

Fortuately, Nick's stuff mostly needs tweaks rather than wholesale recutting, thank the coffee maker.

Great to see new Intrepid!

The single biggest problem I had was with the sound. In particular, out on the lawn, around 4:00 give or take, the music overwhelms the voice in a couple of places. I'm afraid that I wasn't able to decipher some of the dialog then. Everywhere else I was able to make out what was said.

Aside from that, I enjoyed "Transposition." The brisk no-nonsense pacing was nice to see. When the suggestion was made to split up, I thought, "Oh, no, things are going to get needlessly complicated...." I was glad to see that I was wrong; I really liked the way the team converged back together forthwith.

Thank you!

You'll have no trouble hearing what's being said if you use the high-quality downloaded version.

To clarify, I was streaming from YouTube on default settings using the provided embedded video upthread.

I get how YouTube compression could affect audio quality. I don't see how it could affect the music to dialog levels, tho.

Corporal Captain, thanks as always for watching, and for the kind words. I think you're right, the music is a little overwhelming in places, and something we probably should have tweaked. We'll do better (hopefully) next time. :)

Maybe some people can process the uncompressed audio better than others? I don't know, but whatever works. :)
