I get that it's a teaser, but this thing is embarrassingly bad. They should have put a lot more elbow grease to it before releasing it, especially if they're trying to excite anyone.

Forget the acting. The lighting, camera work and the editing were total amateur hour. You can even see florescent tubes reflected in the (not activated?) bridge readout screens. The framing is clunky and uninteresting. The cutting is...was there any cutting? Outside of the transporter room it felt like there was no coverage in the other locations, what with the long held takes from a single POV as in the turbolift.

Surprisingly bad; I expected it to be better. I actually edited my first response (to simply "wow") as I felt that my initial reaction post was too harsh.

As I recall from their last fundraiser, the $5000 was for editing, not effects. Presumably, the effects were already paid for out the "tens of thousands" already spent out of their own pockets.

There was about as many FX shots as a standard STC episode, and a lot less than a Phase 2 epi., and I'm sure their VFX budget isn't in the multiple 5-figures (less than 20 000$ I can believe it. More, no way)

Their image editing and sound editing left a LOT to be desired (Sometimes they have the laser cannon sounds for the big mutha in the film, sometimes they don't. And no multiple layers of spaceship sounds in space, (I guess I've been spoiled by the great sound job done on Axanar). Also some scènes start to play some classic TOS music, only to suddenly be cut off for no reason, then no sound at all for a few seconds...
Even a film school student could do a better job than this...

I'm not expert in editing. But I'm not a complete novice either. I realise the editing on this shouldn't have cost anywhere even close to $5000.

Agreed, but inexperience can sometimes be costly. Years ago I went to work for some very inexperienced producers who were unaware that in my canadian hometown there were some Professional voice recording studios already there, but the production team either didn't know this or had an agenda. Before I was hired they were ready to fly the voice acting cast all the way to London (England, not Ontario) multiple times. This would have increased the acting budget to insane levels.

So I wonder what is next from them? Are they going to try to release an act every year or something? That's would give them enough time to get Blanca some acting lessons and maybe fix some mistakes . I would think this teaser may have actually hurt there efforts to raise more money to complete the film.

BTW James, I know your out there somewhere wiping your forehead over the bullet you just dodged with this LOL. I'm sure if you had stayed involved however, with this project, it would have been good

If I remember correctly (and I wouldn't want to stake my life on this) Ms Blanco was identified as Mr. Lockwood's girlfriend on a now withdraw episode of Steve Neill's Garage on You Tube. I had a link to it at one time, but it was made private. I still have the link in case they make it public again, but right now it's still private. As far as anyone pushing her to act, I doubt that that's the story. I got the impression she met him when auditioning for something. But I admit I am guessing, and I watched that episode of SNG a long time ago.

That episode of SNG left me expecting pretty much what we got in this release. Say what you will about them, but John Savage can act. This is almost a setup to show what a real actor can do when set against people who can't act. I admit I have learned a huge amount about acting just by watching both success and failure in the ST Fan Film community.

My apologies - I must have mixed this up. I knew I read somewhere that Ms. Blanco was the girlfriend of someone associated with the production. If it´s Mr. Lockwood, then good for him!

And my other apology is for making Mr. Savage an Oscar winner. He was in the 5 oscar winning movie "the deer hunter" and I somehow had in mind that he won best supporting actor, but that one went rightfully to the awesome Christoper Walken.

If I had to guess how you spend $5K to produce something this low quality I'd say the money was spent buying an editing system powerful enough to work with UHD/4K footage rather than being humanhours of time.

Actors in film live or die at the hands of their directors and editors, so no matter how good Savage might be if he's not directed, filmed and/or edited properly, he's never going to look good.

Some of the effects aren't bad. The lead actor is professional.

And the professional lead actor had the fortune of having his text displayed to him during the whole elevator scene, evidently. Actually quite funny, as I often exactly folded my hands like he did when I tried to look kind of stressed while trying to read my lines.
Well, I like John Savages' work in general, but what if not just this teaser but the whole show turns out to be "rehearsal process" for the lead actors being filmed...

Yes, I too thought that she was Mr. Savage's girlfriend as mentioned in SNG.

Not according to James Cawley, though that could have changed. When asked on their Facebook page if they would be shooting on the New Voyages sets again, the response was "a bit". So who knows?
