Star Trek Endurance Run: Is this a thing?

Hey, everyone. I'm new to the forums here, so please forgive my ignorance. I was wondering, has anyone every attempted to watch every episode of Star Trek, beginning with the original series, having never seen it before? I thought I might try watching one episode a day, every day, and blog about my impressions of it. Aside from the recent movie and one episode of TNG where the Enterprise keeps on exploding (the only episode I ever seem to catch), I've never really watched the shows. I'm hoping to change that.

So yeah, has anyone ever come in blind, committed to watching it, and then written about it?

Hmm. According to Memory Alpha, there have been a total of 727 episodes and movies released to date. The upcoming movie will make it 728. At one a day, it will take you almost exactly two years.

First-time watch threads are common here, though I don’t recall seeing anybody do it for the whole franchise. Usually such threads cover only one series. It’ll be interesting to see how you react.

You might find it less of an endurance contest if you’re selective in your episodes instead of watching every episode in every series. Skipping some of the more disposable episodes will get you through it faster and maintain a higher average quality of the viewing experience. Worry about completism if and when you become an addict, not as a newbie. People here (myself included) will be happy to help you choose episodes if you’d like.

One decision to make is whether to watch ENT after VOY or before TOS. I’d vote for after VOY.

Also, TOS episode order can be a little controversial. The most “official” order is probably original broadcast order, but many people prefer to watch the episodes in production order. I personally prefer an order based on stardate.

What captrek said, but the entire question of which episodes are "disposable" and which are not can be more than a little contentious.

Plus, it would be illuminating to watch a few of the truly frightful episodes, just to provide a yardstick on overall quality.

Good luck, anyhow.

I think it would be tough to stick to one episode a day - maybe on average but watching an episode EVERY day for 2 years? Sometimes you're not gonna have time/the desire and other times you're gonna wanna watch 3 or 4 in a single day. I'd say be less regimented with your plan.
Oh and "Enterprise" definitely needs to be watched last, not first. Its irrelevant that its a prequel to TOS, in the end its still an addition to the Star Trek FRANCHISE and should be watched in line with that. Some younger people find TOS a tad too dated and find it easier to get into the series with TNG.

I hope you do watch Star Trek though, there's over 700 episodes out there for you to enjoy - tons of stories, character and an expansive universe to enjoy. You can always check out a few of the best to get a feeling for each series and for Star Trek in general. And you can check my top 30 Star Trek episodes video on youtube (in my signature) to get a feeling for what its all like and some episodes to try! Oh and this anniversary video's also pretty good http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3pOkhU9iYM

if you are watching them on dvd\without commercials, each episode is about 45 minutes. when I get on a kick to rewatch my dvd collection (I have all shows and movies on DVD), I usually watch 1-2 dvds a night, and that can be 4-8 episodes.

Yeah, if you do 'binge watching' you can work yourself through a series pretty quickly. I did this with the new Doctor Who series when it was in its fourth season and managed to watch all the preceding episodes within a month or so. But even so, all of Trek would take really long.
I dimly remember someone from a family of Trekkies who was new to Trek himself post here who planned to watch all of Trek before the new movie came out. I'm note sure whether he ever made it beyond Enterprise, though.

I would skip "Enterprise" all together, but that's just me.
Nah, you need to watch it first. :p

Yep, that's what I did when I had my "Star Trek-a-thon" back in 2007.

But to answer the OP's question:

Watch it all straight through? Yes.

Write about it? No.

Also, when I did this, I wasn't a new fan, I've been one all my life, so I knew what to expect going in.

Why not? People do watch threads all the time around here.

At the time I had my Star Trek marathon, I wasn't a member here. Plus, I'm just not interested much in writing a continuing blog such as what the OP suggests. I'm too busy writing other things

Oh, I misunderstood. I thought you were saying OP shouldn't do it.

Nope. I wouldn't have suggested that. The OP asked if any of us had written a blog about our re-watches, and my "no" was answering, "No, I haven't".

I'd rather like to watch some episodes when I want to (maybe 5 on Sunday but none on Thursday because I don't feel like it) than being "forced" to watch one per day and having to write about it. And I doubt someone has enough interesting things to say to blog one time a day about a franchise which is debated over and over on websites like this one. I'm wandering what would be the point of such a blog but feeling important for ten minutes everyday.

But, eh, do what you want to :)
