Just started watching Season 4 and noticed lack of white straight male characters (in a meaningful bridge crew role). Now, these migh pop-up later on (as I said, I just started watching the season) so apologies in advance if actually a mute point.

Now, I'm all for diversity and have been a Trek fan since childhood and I fully support having people of diverse backgrounds, sexual orientations etc. I have a feeling though that this woke-diversity thing went a whee bit too far at the expense of the above referenced population/type.

I now this is a sensitive subject and it's kinda hard to go about it without offending someone, but it's really too apearent to be just completely ignored.

Just as it was wrong to (in the past) ignore and underrepresent minorities in tv shows, we shouldn't be ok with pushing the majority population to the margins to make room for other people. Diversity, in my view, should reflect the actual percentage of groups in the society. It shouldn't be about revenge or "getting even" at the majority as it would kind of make it a reverse racism of sorts, wouldn't it?

    What do you guys think?

    In before the lock!

Too many non-whites? Let's get back to marginalizing 'em? We must have gone warp 10 back to the 1960s.

I mean we are about to get a show with where two of the leads are going to be straight white males (plus another, but he's gonna be covered by alien makeup), and with Lower Decks there is also a straight white male among the four leads (plus two more among the regularly seen secondary characters) and the series lead of Picard is also a straight white male.
So I don't see the problem with Discovery not having any among the leads. Plus past season of Discovery had straight white males in prominent position (one of them being spun off into the new show I mentioned above)

I mean how many more do you want?

I remember OP used to post on ENT forum but eventually got banned. He is off on a similar path here.

Should I paste my demographic breakdown of global humanity from the last time this topic popped up before the lock?

Maybe the short version will be enough. White males take up about 8% of the global population, and if I recall correctly, that was a generous rounding on my part. There are literally fewer white males in the entire world than men living in India or China each.

I know, right? It's so excruciatingly hard to live as a white man nowadays that I even had to stop being one!

The OP seems to be asking “is this diversity gone too far,” or something to that effect.

Nope. It is not. At all.

Straight white men are doing just fine in Star Trek.

I'd rather be "woke" than asleep.

Which reminds me. I need to pick up more nail polish before I run out. (I have black nails, as anyone who saw me in Zoom Sessions knows.)

SNW has the first truly "American Born & Bred" White Male Captain in Anson Mount portraying Christopher Pike.

William Shatner was a Canadian that became a US Citizen later on.

Patrick Stewart is a Englishmen that became and US Citizen later on.

Avery Brooks was the first Black Male Captain

Kate Mulgrew was the first White Female Captain

Sonequa Martin Green is the first Black Female Captain.

We still don't have a Official Asian Captain of ANY sort to headline a TV show.

And there are MANY types of Asian's as you know.

Don't forget the varied Pacific Islanders as well for Captaincy.

Who wants to see a the first Samoan Captain?

What about the first Official Indian Captain?

What about the first Official Middle Eastern Captain?

What about the first European Captain?

What about the first Slavic Captain?

There are still MANY MANY firsts to be had in Star Trek for the Captain's chair.

We're NO WHERE close to covering every Ethnic & Gender combination possible.
