star trek discovery uniforms, costumes, and clothing

As someone who works on cars at times, that's why I like them.

Glad I said something about the uniforms, then! Originally, I wasn't going to. The more people I know who know something about cars, the better. Especially if I think someone else is trying to rip me off.

Why they never went with something like this, the perfect balance of ENT practicality and TOS style, I'll never know.

Star Trek uniforms so rarely look like anything people would wear in a working situation. The Enterprise outfits came closest; the STD outfits may be tied with the "monster maroons" as the most implausible.

Retail pyjama tops. I wore the pink and blue of a famous record store for a while. Hoo Rah.

I think the Enterprise uniforms are the most practical (obviously they were based off of real world NASA wear), and they looked good on screen. I think number two is the TOS uniforms, simple and don't restrict movement.

I actually think that TMP uniforms had the best combination of futurism and practicality. I know that in reality they were hella uncomfortable, but they look like futuristic smart clothes, and there were plenty of variations for different jobs.

I can maybe buy ENT uniforms for 2150's but further in the future we go, less like modern clothes the uniforms should look. Think about the stuff people wore three hundred years ago, it is pretty damn different from the stuff we have today.

They are calling these 'Trekinis':

These are "pajamas"? They're active wear. Otherwise then, technically I wear "pajamas" every time I hike or exercise or don't wear jeans. :p

I think a few people around here need to update their definition of clothing to fit the times. Maybe it's a generational thing.

That's the term they're marketed as, by the stores.

As an aside, I have seen various women wear pajamas of whatever pattern, both bottoms and tops, when going out to the store and whatnot. Haven't happened to see men do it, in my travels. Women also wear men's boxer shorts as regular outerwear shorts in public, but men are evidently not allowed to do that. Men can go with no shirt, but women can't.

Fashion, what is allowed where and what is not, etc....it is all very complicated. :borg:

Essentially, what we wear today was considered undergarments back then.
We just don't wear the multiple layers that folks 300 years ago wore.
And we've pretty much graduated from extensive use of buttons and strings, to Velcro and minimal zippers/buttons.

Heh, that second picture, the corridor design in the background is from Star Trek Online.

Guess the artist was a fan.

I wish they hadn't given them skirts at all.

I'll agree to that. The trouser/blouse format is preferred. But to be respectful of TOS a skirt/dress (done correctly of course) would make sense and fits canon (whatever that truly is). Also giving females an alternate uniform also makes sense. I don't see modern day alternate female uniform norms changing anytime soon in the next few centuries.

The uniforms do have a NASA-look sort of, but I also think they also have a car mechanic look. Not my thing. I think the Disco Uniforms look sharper.

The half-collar and the way it doesn't line up with the zipper is horrendous. That's to say nothing of the sequins or the zap brannigan shoulders. I'm sure some Trek fans Stockholm-syndromed themselves into thinking they like them, but they're bad and the TOS hybrid uniform that Pike and co. wear are only marginally better.

I've never understood 'Zap Brannigan/Futurama shoulders' popularised in 50s sci-fi, are they supposed to be some form of advanced articulation?

Broad shoulders look attractive and powerfull. Even military uniforms today therefore put an emphasis on the shoulder region. Those shoulder-stripes are a simple fashion choice on how to achieve the same effect while not using contemporary fashion. And because it was so effective, it was so much copied and reproduced that, ironically, it became associated with a certain period and fashion style again.
