Spoilers Star Trek Discovery - Starships and Technology Season Five Discussion

Major Grin, urgh. I still remember the times when Grin stirred up trouble by posting controversial YouTube videos.

It was kind of a copy-paste fest with existing designs, kind of like Frontier Day like you mentioned, and the PIC S1 finale. I didn't see anything new all season, at least with regard to Federation vessels.
We got the Merian Friendship hybrid. I hope it turns up in STO.

There should have been some of those massive Earth ships in the fleet, just re-badged. Same for the Ni'Var.

Yeah, I think we only saw that elephant ship once (maybe twice) and I was fascinated by it. Sadly, now that Eaglemoss is long gone, we'll never see those more obscure vessels that they specialized in.

All of those ships were built pre-Burn, correct? They'd all be over a hundred years old. One would think that post-Burn, Starfleet would have started designing and building new ships, especially for the time-jump we see at the conclusion. Guess they didn't want to bother making new CGI models for a tacked-on, last-minute scene ;)

Seriously, I'm going to assume they'll create newer ships for SFA, whenever that will be.

True - all these ships may have been in drydock being built when all the dilithium went <FOOM!>, before the warp cores were installed. They may have been finished, but were just never commissioned and fielded, because they had nothing to run the engines.

In short, yes, they were all antiques, but had zero mileage, so still in mint condition and in their original factory wrapper. Just needed a fresh coat of paint and new-car scent sprayed everywhere. :D

Really, like what they did with Discovery. At the time she's seen 2-3 years of active service. Probably didn't even need a baryon sweep.

In a sense though, it's a valid excuse to kick off Academy with a new, markedly different design aesthetic that'll be iconic of the 32nd-33rd centuries. The only "new" design of the 3190s was the Archer spacedock. I'm sure that all those idle engineers spent literally decades designing new ship designs for whenever they'd get dilithium or alternate FTL back, and the new show would be a great time to premiere them.

Has it been confirmed that the Academy series will be in the 32nd century?

It's been pointed out that Kovich could have been Lt. Daniels, tactical officer of the Enterprise-E whenever Worf wasn't aboard, in another earlier incarnation; his "retirement" after the end of the Dominion War in novels at a relatively early age could be his cover for a return to the future.

In the tie-in novels (which recently declared themselves non-canonical whatever that may mean- (I guess they un-happened due to time travel but somehow still exist on my bookshelves)) Archer’s contact Daniels was known as Timot Danlon in his home time period. Around 3051 he was a Federation Temporal Agent who brought the Suliban/Romulan/Tandaran “Sponsor” Jamran Harnoth of 28th Century to trial.

Since Kovich was never intended to be Daniels in the first place and was just retconned into being him later, I doubt some one-off crewmember from one movie was meant to be the same guy either, simply because he has the same last name.

Interesting views of the 32nd Century Connie Class.

Not that long since Dilithium became readily available. Still might take years to design and build new ships, versus retrofitting older ones.
I disagree.
Even in the 24th century it was relatively easy to refit older ships with modern hw with just replicators and transporters - especially because SF ships are usually designed to be modular.
In the 32nd century, it would be even easier to upgrade everything.
Discovery was thoroughly refitted using 32nd century technology in 3 weeks... and that was a ship 930 years from the past.

Deign of ships took a longer time in the mid 24th century. The Galaxy class was probably in design development stage for a while (unofficial sources say 14 year) whereas actual construction of the thing would have taken a fraction of the time (about a month if you factor in all the tech SF had back then).

However, past that point, things started to accelerate radically... as we've seen new designs like the Sovereign, Intrepid, Defiant, etc. only about 5 years after Wolf 359 (which was end of S3 and start of S4 of TNG).

Plus if SF actually decided to use automated R&D using their computer systems, design and development of new ships would probably be reduced to a few days or less. That is if they have an equivalent of 'supercomputer datacentre' which networks multiple computer cores in massive parallelism.

I wouldn't exactly call them 'antiques' mainly because if the inner hw was modern, then they were basically 32nd century modern ships with up to date tech... just older frames (and even that's not certain because you can just take section of a ship, recycle it into energy and then just add a bit more energy or matter to basically create a frame that was just out of assembly line).

It would have been akin to the USS Lakota being modified with 24th century technology and managing to rival the Defiant (a modern late 24th century 'warship').

The only thing that grates me is that SF seemingly lost the ability to defend itself effectively against other powers.
The Emerald chain and the Breen seemingly had massive behemoths of ships that SF individual ships couldn't hope to match.
In the 24th century, SF wasn't generally fooling around and kept itself up to date. The Remans started a trend with the Scimitar, but even then the ENT-E was able to hold its own against that thing (until it got some assistance from the Romulans which gave it a second wind).

In the 32nd century, it seems any other power can just easily stomp over anything SF has in that future - which makes me wonder, why do more hostile species even 'tolerate' UFP's existence in that case and not simply wipe it out of existence?

Granted, its possible that because UFP spread so far before the Burn and a lot of time has passed, its possible that many hostile species simply were no longer hostile to the Federation.
But the ones that were (like the Breen)... I mean, it never made sense they'd need the Progenitor's technology to wipe out the Federation. They could have easily done it at any time, so why go through the whole song and dance when they'd really have 0 reason to do that?

It's one reason I've always liked the idea that Starfleet builds a relative handful of ships specifically for tactical duties, like the Defiant and the various dreadnoughts and battleships in some fan works, even if it's fair to say they build a higher percentage of multirole vessels also. The Excelsior was assumed to be the first dedicated battleship class by FASA, and for myself it's kind of debatable whether to keep it in in that role or to assume it was reclassified as a heavy cruiser by the TNG era, as some sources prefer.

I think Starfleet would need and want to have the ships available to handle dedicated military functions, given their history with hostile foreign powers.

News! The class of Moll and Lak‘s ship becomes playable in STO.
According to STO, their ship was not just some random alien courier but a Breen ship!
It receives a class name: Keth Sarr class. This is consistent with the naming style of 24th and 25th century Breen ship classes in the game.

I don’t plan on getting the ship soon. But I hope this means we could see the Antares type down the line.

The show already proved this. You can see several of this design flying around the Breen dreadnaught.

Memory-Alpha for some reason doesn't mention this.
