News Star Trek: Discovery - Renewed for a 4th Season?

Official word at the moment is the move to the 32nd century is permanent. Unless fan reaction to the 32nd century is so overwhelmingly negative it takes a dent in the show's viewership figures, I'm thinking it'll stay there for the fourth season.
Well we know Georgiou will be going back for her own show unless the show runners have changed their minds story wise.

Its happened before.

Presumably they will use the Suit to send her back, they know where to get the crystals from.

You mean the showrunners will come to their senses and say that a Section 31 show is a horrible idea? Yeah, I’m not counting on that...

Nah I am fine with a S31 show in principle as I have always enjoyed the S31 episodes in DS9 but it only really makes sense if there is another show running alongside it in the same era, if it ends up being a Pike/Enterprise show then that would make sense but there have been no announcements for it so far.

They would keep the reveal for a big event though rather than just release it.

I do wonder how exactly a S31 will work if there is no companion show now that the Discovery is allegedly not going back to its own era, although we do know that Georgiou will have to go back for it.

Most likely they will use the suit to do it.

I understand that the show runners moved the show forward in time to get around the good old canon violations, but it would have been better off staying where it was as adding more time travel after all the stuff we have had in the first two seasons is a bit much.

The show never really got a chance to properly establish the characters and state of the galaxy like previous series and I agree that some of those stand alone episodes were a bit boring looking back (they weren't at the time of course) but they did serve a very important purpose.

It just makes me wonder what they are planning and the low key release of a go for S4 is really odd when we havent even got a firm date for S3 yet, its all backwards.

I wont go any further here as its not the right place for it and I dont want to start another forum fight between the factions.

It's important to consider that the current contract of the Writers Guild and the studios is ending in May. There are some reports suggesting that a new writers strike might happen in the second half of the year. So the studios are making sure they having as many scripts as possible ready to shoot by then. I think an early renewal would make sense given that situation.

It’s great that DSC is apparently getting a fourth season (I’m a big fan of the show) but do we have any idea when we might get to see the third season?
Copying and pasting my reply to the same question from another thread:
The producers have said that both Discovery and Lower Decks will be ready by May and it is up to CBS AA to decide when to make them available:

I doubt if CBS would use Discovery during summer months but an animated series is a good fit for that time. So they probably start Lower Decks in May and we may not see Discovery season 3 until September/October.

You're assuming there is a "end". There is nothing saying CBS couldn't keep Discovery going as long as it's being watched, blu-rays are selling, etc. Even if actors leave they could rotate new ones in as the focus. Since seasons are short there doesn't have to be a set number of seasons. Only with Picard has there been talk about it being limited to just a few. There has been no talk regarding that with Discovery last time I checked.

Soj is made by Data, with Picard DNA.

Star Trek: My Two Dads.

This tweet says DSC S3 is coming soon so I would have bet on spring. Autumn doesn't fit the word soon, besides, the CBSAA is a svod, so it aims to make sure that as many subscribers as possible pay for the whole year.

Isn't that a bit too long a gap between seasons? I feel they will release season 3 of Discovery at the end of April or early May.

That's what I expect as well. Since when to streaming services care about traditional Network seasons where it comes to when they launch a new season of shows?

They shouldn't. But CBS AA has been kind of acting like it. That's one reason we got Short Treks. Discovery season 2 wasn't ready til Jan 2019 so they used Short Treks to kick off their Star Trek season in October. Similar this season with Picard and Short Treks. So they probably want something new during next October too. It could be Discovery season 3, Lower Decks, or more Short Treks.

Section 31 is very likely to be starting up in Jan next year, so they can easily plug in a few short treks between the end of Disco this summer and Section 31. Doncha want you some more Pike? I also forecast a 50/50 chance the Enterprise and crew will be Section 31 guest stars.

I would surmise they want some sort of new Star Trek related content year-round; and the more live action content the better.

I would think Discovery season 3 would start right after Picard, probably followed by the premiere of Section 31.

I would think Lower Decks Will be treated something like Short Treks as something a little different between the live-action series.

Season 2 of Picard could even drop at the end of THIS year, according to a Hollywood trade paper. It will finish filming in August. I think we'll see season 2 of Picard before season 1 of Section 31.

I had read rumors of Picard season 2 starting filming around March and Section 31 in May, but I still think they will wait until next year for Picard. We could see January 2021 for Picard, followed by Section 31, and then Discovery season 4 in the fall or something. Kurtzman also said there are 2 other live action Trek series in development, so if those end up getting off the ground who knows.

I think as long as they keep producing Star Trek series that are off the standard formula / presentation (Picard, Section 31, Lower Decks, etc) I'll be on-board.

If they just try to make another version of "starship going planet-to-planet on missions" it will get old fast.

I know it's probably not a great idea from a cost-model perspective, but I'd love to see "Long Treks," which would be 2-hour movie events set in the Trek universe. That's where you could do your universe-expansion stories, back stories, etc

Pike Movie
Prime Lorca / Mirror Lorca Exchange Story
Starfleet Academy Story
Picard Stargazer Story
DS9 Follow-Up Story
...whatever!

....there's so much potential in that format. I'm sure they don't do it though, because the sets and digital models are not as re-usable as they are in a series, so it's not a great cost model.

I wonder what season four will be about?

In season one, Burnham saves the Federation...
Season two, Burnham saves the Federation...
Burnham likely saves the Federation in the future...
Season four?
