Star Trek Discovery in trouble, and a de facto reboot?

I have reached the point where I am done with podcasts and vloggers. I have a few sites that have proven themselves with production news, I will stick with them. I hate the way any goober with a PC can now throw anything out there and then it turns into "news".

It's been driving me mental for years - through the Discovery process it feels like it's getting a lot worse: Negativity and made up nonsense over all else :/

I've made a point of only posting positive, confirmed information. It's few and far between - but I'd rather that than clickbait with "Someone said a thing that's 100% true as they heard it form their friends, dogs, owners neighbour who works across the street from a studio CBS once used in 1997!"

I suspect and hope that, in the end, this is really part of the development process. The tug of war between the creatives and the people footing the bill has, at least for ST, produced five franchise series running anywhere from 3 to 7 years in duration each. Here's to hoping that the most recent tug of war produces something that is palatable for the suits at CBS, the folks paying the bills and taking a chance on the new series at Netflix, and the fans (both casual and die-hards). Producing this and satisfying all involved seems a monumental task

It's an impossible task. There's no way they can please everybody. The best they can do is make the show they want to see (while under CBS's ever-watchful eye).
Well, yes, not everyone will have exactly their vision, I agree. I hope that "tug of war" works to produce a show that is at least viable as the same struggle produced five other ST series. Another alternative is to give up all hope and say the ship is sinking, throw up your hands and watch ST go away on the small screen for another 5 to 10 years. I'm trying to be more positive here - although I appreciate your point of view, that they should just make the darn show they want to see. The trouble is, there are a lot of "they's" and don't see everything eye to eye.

I watched the video, came on here to see if it had been mentioned.

Midnight's Edge is fairly accurate when they come to rumours of genre films. I don't always agree with their commentary but they don't tend to make things up. They make sure to stress everything is rumours but the rumours are usually pretty accurate and make sense when reconciled to public knowledge.

In this case, if anything they are saying is true, then we'll be hearing more of it soon. These are some major issues and changes that can't be kept hidden. If this is a reboot of a reboot with super advanced tech and interdimensional travel we will see that pretty quickly as publicity shots and teasers come out. And that will help inform if any of the other rumours are worth listening too. If the leakers plot descriptions are accurate, it's worth listening too. If the plot is wrong, then the rest is made up BS too.

People can accept reboots of the origins of Sherlock Holmes, Batman, Superman and every other fictional characters but don't touch Star Trek! Please..kiss me neck!

If the video is true then I an extremely disappointed in what we will be getting. Trek will be dead. To cast aside Fuller when he knew what fans would want, especially those who weren't fans of JJTrek, seems foolhardy. Moonves worries me greatly. He was the guy behind the cancellation of Enterprise, and at that time the inside rumour was that he hated Star Trek (not just Enterprise), so the idea of him trying to meddle and not understanding the core of Trek does not surprise me at all.

However, Midnight Edge are in no way of any authority. All they are is a YouTube channel that keeps abreast of the various forums and social media channels were rumours are posted and combine them with public stories to create a picture of what is happening. With Ghostbusters there was a much greater rumour, and even paperwork trail, and with Fantastic Four it was almost entirely reliant on the well known Josh Trank affair. I think with this they have less material to work with so are giving over to speculation more. So we will need to wait and see if this is third time lucky for them.

Trek is unique among media franchises in ostensibly maintaining a cohesive continuity throughout many series and movies (even if there were some contradictory details).

I don't really care if the new show is exactly in continuity with what came before, in every little detail. Just make it good.

There's definitely some problems with Discovery's production. I hope it's not the train wreck that its rumored to be. Until there's some footage it will be hard to tell. I think I'm just gonna play me some Zelda and not worry about it until than.

This series is going to be the "Rogue One" of Star Trek. It's immediately set before the original Star Trek. There are going to be tons of references to the original show. Wether or not that qualifies as a "stealth reboot", a clean reboot, or still as "prime universe" will probably depend greatly on you if you thought "Rogue One" was believable as a prequel to the original Star Wars.

Officially it's going to stay "canon", aka the prime universe. That's what Fuller said, that's what his original idea was, and they booted him way to late in the process to re-do the series premise as a whole. In fact Fuller wrote the first few episodes, and they will still use his overall outline for the first season. (beyond that? Anything's possible) They re-doing some major design and production values? So what.

No one expects women to curl up to a man and state that they're frightened in a possible dangerous situation.
That might play quite well in foreign markets.

Have to keep in mind how the show will play in China.

Oh, I really wish it would be 'Rogue One' of Star Trek, but I doubt it will. Let's just hope it won't be 'The Phantom Menace' of Star Trek...

Well they won't be. Unless they've invented actual time travel, those stories will always have been told and always be available to watch.

Yeah, that's what everyone says, but when's the last time you caught an episode of Star Trek: Columbia? That's right, it was before the Hipparchus Rift anomaly of 2038.

I think difference is that most of the reboots just start over with a clean slate, leaving the original untouched. Star Trek's reboot affected and modified the original.

(I personally wonder if Discovery would be best off as a hard reboot. It'd be more enjoyable to see it go it's own way than have it be inconsistent with the TV shows it's ostensibly a prequel to.)

In various interviews and articles they've stated that it's a reboot, using words like "re-imagining" and "updated visuals" etc. They haven't actually used the word "reboot" to avoid offending the hypersensitive fans who will be offended regardless.
But it's still a fucking reboot whatever you want to call it.
Well, a re-imaging and updated visuals are NOT the same as a reboot. The former refers to the visual style while the later refers to the narrative universe/timeline in which the stories take place. You can have updated visuals without a reboot.

So, just relax a bit, alright? ;)
