Well, her first ST novel was 2005's String Theory: Fusion, so I wonder if you might be thinking of a different author if you remember reading VOY novels by someone with that name in the 90s? But yeah, she used to post on the TrekLit forum a lot back in the day under her own name. She earned the nickname "Kirsten MotherFucking Beyer" after her book Full Circle became especially beloved. :bolian:
I might have got the decade wrong but it was definitely Kirsten, I collected all of the Voyager books.

This is what Star Trek is all about. The Zora plot is about seeking out new life, and boldly going where none have gone before, and the Assembly plot is about making every effort at peaceful contact before resorting to violence.

. . . as a symbiont pool lifeguard . . . .
Uh, that sounds like an outright slur. Even if it's a slur against a fictional species (and I tell lightbulb jokes about Klingons, Ferengi, and [from B5] Vorlons), it's still dismissive and unfunny.

 How so? I admit my memory of this particular episode is hazy at best, but isn’t Tal leaving Discovery to become a guardian on the Trill homeworld? “Symbiont pool lifeguard” might make a bit light of what their responsibilities encompass, but “an outright slur”, “dismissive and unfunny”? Excuse me, but what are you talking about?

I don't see it as a slur either. Trill Guardians look after the welfare of the symbionts in the pools in the Caves of Mak'ala. That is exactly what present day lifeguards do in environments where people are swimming. So how the hell can it be a slur?

isn’t Tal leaving Discovery to become a guardian on the Trill homeworld?

Gray is.

The Tal symbiont is joined with Adira by this point.

Dang, you are right of course! I mixed them up. Boy, it’s been so long ago with some of these episodes. And Gray’s and Adira’s story in season four was one of the more enjoyable elements from that particular season, as far as I can remember. I practically stopped caring about the show at the end of season two, but I never really grew tired of these characters. :)
