I’ll never cut him any slack, Archer was the absolute worst. Only captain I really disliked. I’d rank them all like this:

Picard
Sisko
Jan way
Burnham
Kirk
The idiot captain who got stabbed last episode

. *insert anyone else here
.
Archer
Some similarities there. So far, for me, the main series Captain's ranking would be:

Sisko
Picard
Kirk
Janeway
Freeman
Burnham
Archer

Sisko and Picard aren't very far apart and are in a league of their own compared to the rest IMO. Not sure if it's because of Stewart and Brook's theatre/classical background or some other reason.

Burnham and Janeway also aren't very far apart on my list so it's possible those two flip on my ranking depending on how Discovery progresses.

It feels like many of the writers often didn't know how to write for women in command. Kate Mulgrew imbued Janeway with a lot of power and purpose, a tough as nails but compassionate commander, but the writers didn't really write her that way consistently (all in my opinion, ofc).

Burnham is... I don't know. I love the actress. Sonequa-Martin Green has extraordinary talent. I just think the writers are wasting that talent. It's just so kludgy and hackneyed, the words they have her say, and I feel like it goes against SMG's natural speech. I expect Stentorian starfleet edicts out of Picard giving a rousing speech, but Burnham? With how she's been characterized the past 3 other seasons? It doesn't work for me.

The problem with Burnham's speeches is that SMG doesn't project but instead does that husky ultra serious near whisper.

And the simple fact is that just doesn't work in drawing attention to what she's saying.

Formed an alliance with the Borg against 8472 which turned out to be a benevolent race
I wouldn’t say a race bent on destroying all other races was benevolent, even if they were made aware of those other races by the borg.

Her resolution to Year of Hell was later portrayed as making a huge mess someone else had to clean up
uhm, I don’t remember this.

Yeah, that's definitely part of it. She does shout, and it doesn't fit her, and when she does the husky whisper, it's with non-whispery things. It sounds like a stage whisper, or one of those whispers where you're trying to also burp at the same time. It doesn't work.

8472 was portrayed that way in Scorpion but "In the Flesh" portrays them as acting in self defense and they leave on friendly terms. Also, "Hope and Fear" shows other consequences to Janeway's decision as it resulted in the destruction of the antagonist's civilization. I suppose an argument could be made that Janeway made the right decision based on what she knew at the time, but I personally think the series leans towards that being a mistake

The Year of Hell resolution was mentioned in "Relativity" but wasn't central to the story and the person who said it ended up being the antagonist so it's fair to take that one off the list if you don't trust the source.

Archer
I was just making a gazelle joke which should never be passed up. I never liked Archer or ENT despite loving Trek and Quantum leap but he was awful and it didn't help that resorting to former sci-fi greats seemed like such a "Poochie" move that Trek should be above

 is this a reference to Archer running in slow motion at the end of S3 on the Xindi weapon?

Also, one other example I thought of captains being wrong. In Star Trek Into Darkness, Pike chews out Kirk and points out some pretty serious character flaws (that he thinks he's invincible when he's really just getting lucky and if he keeps going with this attitude he will get everyone under his command killed, ouch). Interestingly there was some similar dialogue between Burnham and the president in the S4 premiere which also peaked my interest.

Makes you wonder why they don't just bring in a voice coach to get her up to snuff...

It's not so much a voice coaching issue, her voice is just fine, it's how they're having her do these lines, it's honestly more like what you'd get from a fan production. It's all for coolness factor, and it doesn't fit either the character or her natural flow. It's a problem I have with a lot of modern shows that do action/drama, and that's the feeling that I'm watching those interview scenes with wrestlers that they often do on WWE.

I totally get what you're saying.

WWE definitely has that problem with the wrestlers delivering their lines to act as if they're cool; instead of having them be natural and deliver their lines naturally via improv speeches, no memorized script, just be cool about your delivery to feel authentic.

This was filmed in 1968 and this is how most Trek dialogue should be delivered or something close to it:

This. It's conversational, relaxed. It's two people talking, not two people reciting the script with maximum dramatic effect every single time.

I always felt the chemistry between the big three helped that along. It also helps that D.C. Fontana was a hell of a writer.

Another good back and forth, this time between Captain Picard and Data:
