Between hygmap.space and Celestia, I tentatively assume a distance between Trill (GJ 9417/HD111456) and Ni'Var/Nevasa (40 Eri) of about 86.5 light-years (pending correction by Gaia Mission data). And Guardian Xi was able to do real-time telepresence work with Grey...

I think the level of science is about the same. Stamets can technobabble with the best of them and the show hasn't shied away from using scientific terms, lingo and jargon. Pseudo and otherwise. As for the "feels", TNG was definitely a show about feels. A lot of family drama, romance and the occasional tragedy. It could be a bit psychobabbly too, in keeping with the time it was produced. It usually had an action piece in most episodes, IIRC.

On the science if you are comparing DIS to TOS, DIS might be better. If you are comparing to TNG/DS9, I think DIS is worse. VOY and ENT is more of a toss up as those series also played faster and looser (relatively speaking). I agree that Star Trek as a whole is soft sci-fi. Harder than Star Wars but not by much.

On the "feels", yes that has always been present to some degree but i feel (see what I did there) like it's been taken up a couple of notches in Discovery where individual feelings are more of a central focus.

The Qowat Milat is one of the coolest things modern Trek has added to the canon. I'm stoked.
I quite agree. I'd forgotten that the elder Burnham had survived, had been taken in by the Qowat milat, and had become one herself.

The episode is a wonderful illustration of how there is so much unnecessary bloodshed that could be avoided simply by negotiating, and in some cases, simply by asking the right people for help.

I also enjoyed the "Tal" story. It brings out yet another meaning of "Choose to live." And I really enjoyed the deleted scenes.

And Tilly. Still every bit the awkward innocent who is inexplicably fluent in profanity.

I wish we got to see more of the aliens the blood was spilled for, they're a remarkable design.

The episode is pretty good at demonstrating the faults of these cults/religions: Very narrow visions and single-minded. That being said she was doing the wrong thing for the right reasons.

On the plus side there's a new a Starfleet ship and captain.

Burnham comes off extremely well here, her negotiating skills are being finely honed this season.

Except the religious order the antagonist of this episode belonged to was trying to stop her.

But still with a predilection for going on single-minded tangents. Sometimes they just don't fit in with the big picture.

I mean, sure, but that's true of every single Star Trek captain, too. So I don't think the point was about demonstrating the fault of religious orders.
