TOS started out as the Kirk show. As Spock became popular he got more focus. Even when he was the focus Kirk played a big part (Amok Time. Journey To Babel...) We've had episodes that gave Saru and Tilly a lot do and development much in the way Spock was.
Picard rapidly became the lead in TNG, even though the original plan was for Riker to be more of an equal character.
DS9 was more of an ensemble, but Sisko was clearly the lead, the Bajoran messiah and savior of the Federation.
Voyager was the Janeway show

Still nothing compared to the treatment Burnham gets so far.

ude, do you even Star Trek? "Meaningful" only happened when the plot required it. Another TOS trope is the cast laughing about something in the final shot, even though horrible things happen the previous "hour"
ok, then please refer to me other ST series with scenes where a well trained woman beats Klingon soldiers in their own ship's bridge, without using phasers or other weapons.
Voyager had Janeway use a bat'leth to beat up Borg drones.

DS9 had Kira and Dax go toe to toe with Klingons unarmed too.

So, yeah, nothing new here..
While not shown, I’m sure both Jadzia and Kira could have done that. :)

I've been online since 1996. In Star Trek terms that's the end of the second season of VOY and the fourth season of DS9. In all that time, I have to say that I think bashers have gone after Burnham with as much zeal as Wesley. Possibly more. Not an exaggeration. I think the bashers treated Neelix better than they treat Burnham. And because she dares to do what these bashers wouldn't blink an eye at if Kirk or Picard did. And it's not because she's not a Captain. I used to think that at first. But after all this time, I'm beginning to think differently. It's way too overzealous. Even if she did become Captain, it wouldn't change. Seeing how a lot them treated Mariner recently pretty much confirmed what I'd suspected for a while but hadn't been able to tell for absolute sure until then.

Which is why they should name it "ST Michael Burnham" :)

Still, they focus too much on her without being able to support this focus with a good writing.
Yeah, fair enough.

I had forgotten that her name was originally going to be Rainsford.

So... Why was the guy at the station spending all his time sitting at a desk instead of doing repairs?
There was a description that said...
The new season opens with a strange scene. A lone Starfleet officer wakes up every day, searches the skies, and listens for contact from other Starfleet ships, yet gets no messages. He repeats this day over and over, waiting for some sign that other members of the Federation are still out there.
...so that's his job.

Nope. She is just badly written.
Lol, are we 5y old fanboys? I do not give a damn about who character achieves more.
My fav ST character is not even a lead one.

Nope, it wouldn't. It's bullshit reason after bullshit reason to just hate the character. Excuses to not like her instead of just going "I don't like her." Just own it. You don't have to like everyone.

Had to rewatch it and happy I did. The gang that couldn't shoot straight scenes kind of bothered me, but that's been pretty much par for the course in many an action movie or series, so forgivable.

Not sure about this fixation on Burnham supposedly getting too much screen time, but unless someone does a minute by minute screen time evaluation of each character in Trek history, it's an unproven assertion. Sonequa put in a stellar performance, exhibiting a range of emotions almost Shatneresque in scope, especially in the drugged up scene.

When all is said and done, this Trek incarnation might be the one most remembered for its unabashed inclusion, depending on how the two new characters on the spectrum are handled.

Make the Future Bright Again!

21 years on this board have told me this is the exact situation in a lot of cases.

In general communication on forums often gets quite exhausting.

Things get misunderstood, lost in translation and often the whole thing turns into a contest who writes the last sentence. And most times when you meet those people, you learned to dislike because of their supposed stubbornness, in real life they turn out to be much less unnerving then initially thought.

Internet makes communication easy and cripples it at the same time....

Riffing on what Jadeb said, the problem with the violence isn't really that Michael and Book go on a killing spree. It's that the direction implied that it was no big thing that they went on a killing spree.
Michael: What have I done????!!!!!!!!!!

Book: You're fulfilling your destiny, Michael. Become my apprentice. Learn to use the powers of the pah wraiths!

Michael: I will do whatever you ask. Just help me restore the Federation. I can't live without it!!

Book: To bypass dilithium is a power only lizards have achieved, but if we work together I know we can discover the secret.

Wait... this can't be Star Trek!

What the hell is this? And you got a black character shooting and hitting other dark-skinned characters. That's almost like black on black crime. That's stereotypical.

No, but that's a lot of violence. Yikes. The 90s were crazy.
