I'm still trying to understand my feelings over the episode as a whole, as well as the "save the Federation" premise, but I'll just say the kind of simple awe-inspired belief in something greater that was encapsulated in the Mr. Sahil scene has been missing from these new shows and made me remember why I liked Star Trek in the first place.

Of course, maybe it's because of the political failures of 2020 and how the world is about to fall apart that could make that scene a lot more touching to me than it would be otherwise, but I felt emotional watching Mr. Sahil become inspired by Burnham to believe in something.

Cosmo is the first Betelgeusean we see since TMP!

I though he was one of those aliens from The Gambit?

I think only Michael and Book were vaporizing the baddies, and the "baddies" were under orders to apprehend the two for questioning. Why they would continue that disparity after their comrades are being slaughtered is beyond me.

One other thing that didn't make sense to me: They stole a bunch of diliithium, which the episode makes clear is now incredibly valuable. Why are they coming after them with weapons that can vaporize? Wouldn't that vaporize the dilithium? Or even worse, make a huge boom?

People are assholes, animals are innocent.

We have no reason to presume these people are assholes. They're just working a job, which in this case is providing security at a trading station. No reason for a death sentence.

Sahil getting the field commission from an officer who's 930 years out of her own time and herself lost and scared was a touching moment. Both are feeling lost and directionless but now they both have greater purpose and she helped him find his.

Good point. Probably why they weren't trying to vaporize Michael, just hitting her with a cutting beam or concussion blasts. I was confused why they didn't up the ante to vaporize after Michael and Book started killing them, but you may have answered that question. Dilithium is just that valuable (and also, whatever unknown cargo Book had).

Yeah, the whole it's like "Star Wars" thing was always so weird to me. I mean, literally from the opening minutes of the first episode it was clearly Star Trek. And yeah, it's not 1992 Star Trek, it's 2020 Star Trek. It's not 20th century Star Trek, it's 21st century Star Trek.

Here’s a review with some surprising info about the approach the show takes in the first four episodes. I wouldn’t call them spoilers, but YMMV.

This was funny...
Despite these quibbles, though, Discovery absolutely sells its story and its starry-eyed outlook on the strength of its cast, old and new alike. Burnham and Book have more chemistry in their first 30 seconds on screen together than Michael and Ash Tyler had through two solid seasons of their alleged romance.
...I guess everyone sees that.

And the aforementioned Cleveland Booker, my new favorite character™....

A new startreklogs Instagram is up. It's basically just a brief summary of the episode.

And in The Ready Room for this episode, David Ajala made a curious connection about Cleveland Booker, my new favorite character™ and his special ability (I don't think it means anything, though)...

Which...I'm glad. They appear to have left Lurian and Cardassian makeup alone and I want the Yridians to remain the way they were in the Berman Era series.

Its not OTT at all. I have never been so bored and disappointed. And I've sat through Masks.
Nothing at all seemed in the Trek universe other than the aliens. It was too much like Star Wars. I like Star Wars, this was BAD star wars. Thats my opinion and it wasn't OTT

This season on Star Trek: Michael Burnham...

Not quite sure what I think, I like Idris Astro and all but it seems more generic action sci-fi than "Star Trek" but maybe that will come more as the season progresses.

It is pretty decent action sci-fi though those guys had worse aim than stormtroopers. Why do future guns always seem so impractical to aim and shoot?

You try shooting while running and being accurate. Its not like they were firing LMGs and had the benefit of flooding the field with bullets.

I mean, I would expect the containers to be shielded in some fashion.

They were in a special alcove that Michael and Book break into. I will assume that they were left in the open specifically so that patrons can inspect the crystals and test their veracity. It's a seedy trading hub, so you don't want to buy some red-painted glass.

Just saw it and I give the episode a 7

It was a pretty average opener, and for being on Burnham she had to do a lot of the legwork. I'm not really a fan of openers that kind of delay what happened to everyone for a week or two or 3 so when we didn't even see a hint of Discovery I got a little discouraged. I did love the chemistry between Book and Burnham though, and Burnham drugged up was hilarious.

What saved this episode for me (And I actually got a really big Star Wars feel from it) was the end scene with Burnham, Sahil and raising the flag. I thought that was a great moment and the music build up gave me a little goosebump. I'm excited for the new season, but overall, this opener was a lot more average than I would have liked. Brother is still the best of the three so far.

Given when they were looking for Discovery at the station, you'd think they would have tried contacting the to unidentified Federation starships that were in range.

ENT Season 4 threw their hands up and gave up on the Temporal Cold War after the first two episodes. But, I can see the Cold War turning hot.
Hang on there now. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but it did turn hot. The first two episodes of season 4 served to wrap up the TCW arc (very poorly) by having it become a full blown war. Remember Daniels was all messed up and said that the war was no longer a cold one. Then Daniels comes back at the end to tell Archer the war is coming to an end for good.
Even the trailers/promos called it a time war if I remember correctly.

Running always impacts accuracy. Even in the future that is not a guarantee of hitting your target that is moving. One tip for surviving being shot at is to move in a zig-zag or non-linear fashion.

Also, stormtrooper inaccuracy is overblown, at least according to YouTube.

So....

On one hand I quite like it.Like the new character (is Book his real name) LOVED that market place (was it located in some sort of ruined ship??) Loved the alien makeup, loved the designs and all.

On the other hand I wish this was a different show and not Star Trek.
Not because "tHiS iZ nOt TrEk" or anything like that. I just feel that this premise is so removed from the other shows, and potentially also in world building that I wish it was free of the Star Trek brand to be even more of its own thing.
