First, I want a bed like Aditya Sahil’s.

No, first, Rocket Girl. And “I saved all the things.” That is so perfect.

Anyway, second, I need another episode because there’s so many questions... obviously.

So the technology is sufficiently different enough. The Mercantile was a little hokey to me, but okay. And the humor didn’t work, hopefully they don’t do too much more of that.

Portable transporters. I want a bed like Aditya Sahil’s, and I want a portable transporter. That’s my Christmas list.

Book’s Sanctuary Four I liked. I sense an environmentalists/conservationists angle this season, perhaps.

Overall, I give it an 8.5... 9. And since I’m one of those people who almost invariably think that whatever new is better, it’s my new favorite Star Trek episode.

The list (for my own record keeping):

“That Hope Is You, Part 1”
"The Vulcan Hello"
"Battle at the Binary Stars"
"Light and Shadows"
"If Memory Serves"

Weird mix of violence and unfunny comedy. Some really stiff dialogue, too, and way more theatrical displays of emotion than I needed. But I liked the guy playing Book (and his cat), and the futuristic design work was nice. I liked looking at what was on the screen more than I enjoyed the story being told.

You’d think that dude at the end could have done something more productive with 40 years than sit there hoping someone would show up. And when someone does, his main concern is getting a commission and hanging a flag?

Overall, a pretty tepid opener. But at least there’s no threat to life, the universe and everything ... so far.
Pretty much my thoughts. Although it's visually gorgeous.

A large part of what Discovery does to keep people watching is set up a big mystery with a bunch of questions that need to be addressed over the next 12 weeks or so. Picard was like that too. That's the main pull of the show, unlike a show such as 'The Boys' where i'm interested in the characters and story. I'm a bit tired of the mystery bait with these new Star trek shows.

The Burn happened 100-150 years ago (3038-3088), which is of course, Daniels' time. Whether he exists or not is immaterial, the Federation at that time (which *was* around until after the Burn, and apparently still exists in pockets) was previously involved in Temporal Wars, so the society was probably a lot like Daniels' Federation.

Time travel was outlawed after the Temporal Wars. But... you can time travel quite easily via a warp-capable starship (see: Assignment: Earth, Star Trek IV, etc.). So what better way to outlaw time travel than to get rid of warp drive? I think the Federation, or at least the Time Corps, is still around and was responsible for the Burn. They're "protecting the timeline" by keeping all technology down and maintaining a close eye on what's going down throughout the Quadrants.

They have a hands-off approach, but of course, they're going to get involved when they find some errant time travelers from the olden, old days are skulking about. Fine, go ahead and restart the Federation if that's your wont. But the minute someone tries to "return to their old time" is the minute the Time Corps will come busting in to shut that whole operation down.

We know Book's backstory well enough, but be wary of any new characters with vague backgrounds. That's your temporal spy. I'm calling it before we even meet them.

They need to explain this Temporal War better because from watching Doctor Who we know how dangerous they can be.
were people just fighting to get their hands on the tech or were they fighting through time?

Christopher's Temporal affairs novels paint the 24th century as the National Guard. They don't have the tech to go any where, but they can identify other travelers arriving on Federation soil, and they get locked down quick.

Strong defense, and zero offense.

A pretty "Meh" episode to me. SMG was reminding me of Will Smith with that drugged scene, and Book was somewhat interesting, but in all honesty that was a pretty weak season opener IMO. At least we get to see the Orions and Andorians have a bit more character added to them, plus the one same Andorian actor that seems to be not only in the 23rd but now the 32nd Century...wonder if he's a distant ancestor or a clone...anyways, hope next weeks episode is better. I'll give it a 5...just very "Meh" for me. https://tenor.com/6Drq.gif

Well, I enjoyed it. I also enjoyed the pilot and the season 2 opener, so I'll just take this one episode at a time. Looks like we have our Big Mystery™ for S3: What / Who caused The Burn? So, not all dilithium is destroyed, but the majority of it - what - spontaneously exploded across the galaxy? Got to wonder who would benefit ...

I'm glad they addressed what we knew of this time from previous shows. I can buy that after all the temporal hijinks we saw in Enterprise (the events of Shockwave and The Xindi arc) that after the timeline was "restored", it was decided that it was more trouble than it was worth. Presumably the Temporal Wars are a direct reference to the parties involved in the Temporal Cold War (was it really cold?).

Grudge was gorgeous.

Here's hoping the season 3 charm works for Disco ...

Not quite as explosive an opener as Brother was, but I wouldn’t necessarily call that a bad thing. While Brother was perhaps the most fun I’ve had watching a new episode live, this one felt more even throughout. Solid 8. Hopefully that holds up on a rewatch.

SMG was strong enough to carry the episode and I was surprised by how much I liked Book.

I do find it a bit silly Michael survived a head on collision with a starship. She would be squished like a bug.
You forgot something. Immediately before this, from her POV, she was in the middle of a huge battle in "Such Sweet Sorrow". She had to have some type of shields. Shields that wouldn't have gone out until right after she hit Book.

Keep trying. You'll find something you'll stump me with eventually... even if it takes you seven seasons. ;)

Terrible. The worst episode of Trek ever!
It felt like I was watching season 5 of Andromeda when they ruined the format and had awful planet based stories. If I wanted to watch a Star Wars show I'd subscribe to Disney plus.

Has Burham got temporal narcosis? Why does she keep screaming like a banshee? The only good thing about it was the SFX and the still come on this season teaser.

Very disappointed, but hopefully it'll improve. I can't imagine it can be any worse.

Hard to judge the episode on just the first half, but pretty solid, 7/10. A lot of questions, so long as we get answers I'll be happy.

I'm wide awake. There's no going back. Drinking all that coffee was a huge mistake. Anyway...

If it's not the Omega Particle, then something directly connected to the Temporal War or its immediate aftermath could've caused The Burn. The timing is just way too close to be a coincidence.
