Calypso was not written by Berg/Harberts. It was mostly written by Michael Chabon (now writing for the Picard show) with some story input by Sean Cochran (who wrote Despite Yourself in the first season, but apparently is no longer part of Discovery's writing staff).

Cochran is still on the Discovery writing staff, listed as "Story Editor" in the end credits. He co-wrote "New Eden" episode this season.

Their nineties changed when we reached it (see Voyager) and because our nineties. The way Star Trek looks not to mention its past has never been etched in stone.
Good episode that but they should have done more to differentiate it from ours. Have a Eugenics War reference or something.
The pencil ships were around back then.

I was disappointed to not see any scene between spock , sarek and amanda.

the michael burnham importance is just getting too far, this is almost as bad as when leia hugged rey in the force awakens and ignored chewie for no darm reason

Yes and no. If it's mentioned on screen, then it is canon.

However, something that is not mentioned onscreen does not mean that canon tells us it didn't happen. Please excuse the use of the multiple negatives .

If a certain thing was never mentioned on screen -- for example, Scotty never mentioned siblings -- the idea that Scotty DOES have siblings is fair game. Until we find out onscreen if he has siblings or not, then canon could be said to be completely silent on the issue.

Just because he didn't mention siblings doesn't mean he has none -- although he might have none.

He has a nephew... implies there is a sibling...

I wouldn't like to be paying roaming charges for KatraCom
Guess Sarek must be well off anyway and a big monthly bill wouldn't be a problem

I don't believe they hired Rebecca Romijn for the five minutes of screen time she's had so far. Or credited a random extra as Yeoman Colt just to impress some geeks. Or built that massive bridge for two episodes. Or introduced a second engineer to the series for the hell of it. Or established that Culber's moving to the Enterprise next season because they don't want Wilson Cruz on the show anymore.

But will it be a proper series or a series of "movies"? Or anything else for that matter. I wonder if they already got the thing green lighted and ready to go into pre production.

I get it why Control wants all the spere's information. It helps it to become a villain mastermind. But does it really need it for this still? The Discovery crew said that Control needs the information to become fully conscious. But how can Control be even more conscious than it already is? It can obviously already think and even feel. It is not something like real world Alexa anymore. It is far more advanced and in my opinion already fully conscious. And not only that. It is really powerful. It has taken over all Section 31 ships and there is no reason given, why it can't easily take over more ships, starbases, etc.. It should be easy for such an advanced program to infiltrate practically everything. So even with Discovery and the sphere's data gone, the Federation won't be easily able to destroy Control. Otherwise they would have done it already.

What I also didn't like in this episode were the numerous goodbye scenes. It just was too much. I wanted the Section 31 ships to finally arrive and the story to progress, but there was one goodbye scene with speeches and tears after another. Too many at once. It got boring.

Spock obviously can't go for forever to the future. Him being gone would change the history of the Federation a lot and likely not for the better. So either he won't go for some reason next episode or it might become a reason for Discovery to get back to the past in the next season.

I didn't like the idea of the Federation letting someone like Georgiou run around free and in a position to do a lot of harm. It just makes them look stupid and morally corrupt. I guess to some degrees the writers saw the same problem and changed her character in lightspeed from mass genocidal asshole to helpful and nice with some added snark. The evolution feels fake like hell, but at least the character has some charisma and is not totally boring.

I can't say the same about Tyler. They obviously set him up as a co-lead for the new Section 31 series and this is a really stupid decision. He is such a hole of charisma. Totally boring and his backstory is just a convoluted mess. His relationship with Burnham is one of the worst written and acted romance stories I have ever seen. There is also zero chemistry between them. Did anyone care about any of their scenes together? He is a character they should really kill off, because he doesn't work in any way. Making him a co-lead is super stupid.

  • They found a time to describe a time-travel suit, which looks like common clothes but protects his owner from all the types of radiation? Why Pike couldn't wear one all the time? :wah:
He just needs to wear such a suit each time he does a simulation with cadets. ;)
But I guess they go with the explanation that this suit protects against all radiation with the exception of the one which will melt his face.

Burnham/Tyler? The Internet is ablaze with fans wanting to see these two star-crossed lovers finally come together!

But seriously, no. No one cares. You are not alone in how hollow it seems.
I might be only saying this because I'm a Burnham/Tilly shipper and shippers tend to see subtext in everything, but seriously, the scene where Tilly appeared to say goodbye to Burnham before taking her outside to tell her they had all decided to follow her had a more romantic vibe for me than the entirety of the Burnham/Tyler relationship. But then again, as I've said in the thread for Project Daedalus, the friendship of Tilly and Airiam had more chemistry in the span of a single episode than Burnham and Tyler through all two seasons.

Hi Peeps

Gave this ep a nine! :)

Lotsa to love: Pike's final hurrah as Capt of The Discovery, and the subsequent evacuation 'goodbyes' scene was on-point and well done.

Seeing the Enterprise and Discovery together - exterior shots, and interior scenes - were amazing! So much starship drool all crammed into that episode! I loved seeing the 1701 bridge!

To date: I'm quite conflicted about this current iteration of the Enterprise starship.

On the one hand, it was designed by Eaves - and I'm not the biggest fan of many of his Trek starships. Despite it being something of a design which feels like it's a collection of other trek Enterprises spliced together (and not in a good way), seeing last nights episode, and the Enterprise moving through space, being in battle in various visions of the future, etc... I strangely find myself coming around to her stylings!

On paper, there's much that doesn't appeal to me (in terms of my own Enterprise 1701 design preferences), however now I'm finding myself caught between intrigued and wanting to see more of the starship in action - and not wholly opposed to it as design, like I was when it premiered. Even down to the bridge module exterior goofy window-window - doesn't bother me now, and I actually quite like it.

So basically what I'm saying is: design-wise, I'm okay with this version of the starship - so much so, I'm eyeing up the standard sized Eaglemoss diecast of the Disco-Enterprise!

Just thought I'd share. PS: my changed opinion doesn't mean I love the design now (by any means), but it's seriously growing on me, and I can't deny that salient fact.

:)
