Sarek and Amanda showing up really pushed credibility. I think some kind of mind talk would've made more sense. It also would be less likely that Control would follow them.

Not where time travel is concerned. Dr. Burnham already stated that she knows nothing of the seven signals, which likely means that Burnham from the future did those. Just follow the math after that.

I kinda feel they missed the ball with this one too. Real world predators generally hate taking risks that might result in them getting injured, hence why they will always try to target young, sick or weak animals. It would have been an interesting take to see Saru become some type of aggressive coward and have to work to overcome that.

How about sharks? Apex predators who have nothing to fear generally don't develop fear instincts.

Just a question that's been nagging at me:

Burnham will obviously change the "fate" that was shown to her when she touched the time crystal (they won't kill off the entire cast). What makes it impossible for Pike to change his fate?

Well, Pike was the first one who touched it, and her vision about the crew getting killed took place well after the time she touched it. Something else might be going on. The first time she did touch it she got the same visions that Reno got later, suggesting that particular vision is still going to happen.

How do we know Chabon picked the time on a whim? Is there an interview where he states this?

Here's an IGN article where he talks about it:

“It wasn’t a big discussion,” he said. “I had more apprehension about it. I was worried there might be a big discussion, and I worried it would be a tough sell. I tried it, you know, I think initially in some form of an early draft I did it having been a thousand years. And then, without having got any flack or anything from anybody, just with my own sort of apprehensions [I thought], ‘O.K., this is crazy. I can’t… Can I do that? Maybe I can’t do that.’ And I tried to shorten it. But it just didn’t work, and it almost raised even more questions to shorten the time than having it be a whole millennium that’s passed.”

It was definitely his idea and his idea alone to set Calypso at that time. That's not to say they might not have later worked it into the arc (or still might) but there was no greater plan.

And indeed, he says he expected it to be a problem, but to his surprise it wasn't. Could be they had already decided on the time jump, so when he came in and made his pitch the producers who may have already planned something similar said, "Yeah, that will work." and that was the end of it. Could have just been a happy coincidence.

Way too overtly dramatic, burnham is such the second coming everyone wants to give up their life for her. I thought pike might cry cripes. The Spock death scene in khan was earned, burnham hasn’t earned all that

If you watch the show, Burnham isn't the only character they've been shown they will take risks to save, and Burnham does the same for others. Hell, Pike has done this repeatedly since he showed up. Remember when he jumped on a phaser about to go off to save some kid he didn't even know?

Discovery's first 10 from me.

I did not like the Short Trek Runaway very much, so I was surprised that I loved the Queen.

One bit of nitpicking: I found the scene with Sarek and Amanda shoehorned in a bit. Especially since it created a bit of a plot hole that they had actually solved. Many here were wondering last week why Discovery does not call for more backup. Okay, Control took down the subspace network, great. One little line of dialog that solved that issue. I guess Control forgot about KatraCom. Sarek did not find one of the 7000+ plus ships in short communication range?

Do you not think that the KatraCom might extend to any future Burnham who's come back to the 23rd century in her own RA suit?
