It’s interesting that first 15-20 pages is all gushing after each episode. It takes a while for the critical thinking part of the reviews to start pouring in.
Its also because some like me cant or don't watch the show on the evening it is released.

I tend not to watch until the next day due to being in UK.

Dude, its a giant fucking galaxy. Maybe Vulcan is really close, but it seems really, really unlikely that they would be so nearby they could get there at warp 9 in a few hours. This is one of the worst examples (outside of the Kelvin films) of not understanding the scope of the Trekverse and making the universe seem small for a cheap character moment.
Trek always operates on speed by plot. Always.
Sarek: "I will keep watch over Spock from a distance, as he wishes. Except for in nine years or so, when I'll just randomly show up on his ship and forget all about this noble promise."
He meant when he said it
Not a fan of the buttons , even touch screens are common in our time and buttons outdated. Forget the canon mafia, its not 1966!
Terraleasium is supposedly some kind of sanctuary from it. It never developed a technological level high enough to show up in Control's crosshairs, thanks to Pike's strict-interpretation-ism. They better make a new stained glass window to him, Burnham, and Owo on their church wall.

Assuming Control can't be everywhere at once, it might only activate later on to wipe out any further threat identified or deal with the rare incursion from outside the galaxy (Sorry Kelvans). Life is all over the place in the Trek universe. Assuming the Drake Equation, that would be 40 billion worlds (not counting non-carbon life like the microbrain, crystalline entity, Tholians etc) . Even given hundreds of years Control just might not get around to wiping out a hick civilization like New Eden.
I have wondered when the Sphere data is going to be a bit more proactive about all this
To expect a world to have no technological progress in 900 to 1000 years makes no sense at all. The population should be in the hundred millions if not billions, everyone won't still be following their one world religion.

Wow, over reaction! I didn't tell him to stop watching. He indicated that he probably wouldn't like a Pike show with the current showrunners. I was actually agreeing with him! Given his comments about Discovery and the showrunners, he probably really would not like a Pike series made by the same people. I did suggest that he might not want to watch because, shoot, as he said, he probably won't like it. I didn't tell him not to--as if I had any power over what he'll do.

So, "whining" is an insult? Wow.

And, no, I never suggested ever that he was mentally challenged. Never. I clicked the link and nope. I've actually agreed with him on a number of things in the past as well. For instance, we both LOVE TOS. Now, he did say some fans were "special." In that vein, my comment was about his strong opinion against the show. It takes a special sort of fan to watch a show they dislike so much. That is anyone's prerogative. It was not an insult. If you had asked me about it, or BillJ for that matter, I could've explained. Instead you jumped to conclusions, which I'll note you have done before as a moderator about the usage of certain words with other posters (not me). But, I respect BillJ. We have had debates and disagreements but also agreements on various things over several years.

Well, observe his language in his response to me. Totally uncalled for and it sure appeared like a meltdown. I actually had a very measured reply given what he said.

I will *NOT* be forced to PM you. If you wanted a PM exchange, you should have initiated a conversation in that manner. Instead, you *publically* commented and attributed false words and motives to me. I have the right to respond to your public accusations in a similarly public manner. You are the one who started this as a public exchange rather than a private one. That's on you--not me. It's inappropriate of you to suggest that I can't publically defend myself.

However, I do apologize to everyone else in this thread for this interruption. That certainly was not my intention. *I* am going back to talking about Discovery. For everyone's sake, I won't be discussing this matter any more.
Infraction for ignoring mod instructions to stop arguing. Comments to PM this time or not at all.

I publicly commented because that's what we as mods are supposed to do when we receive a notification. You are not supposed to continue to create a disruption when asked to stop. This should have been a simple request to stop and done.

I like the self-awareness of the exchange.

Georgiou: I'm from the Mirror Universe.
Pike (winking): What Mirror Universe?

"This is a prequel, we don't know anything about no Mirror Universe!" That's the joke and the subtext behind Pike's line.

My understanding may be flawed, but I was of the understanding that Georgiou had access to the Defiant in the Mirror Uni and I completely believe she would have had all information about the 'alternate' universe funneled to her. And I figured Defiant would probably have logs of what happened with Kirk and CO about what happened where they coined said phrases Prime/Mirror. I mean, Defiant disappearing happened after Kirk and Co went there, right? So that is where she is getting the terminology from. They just don't know it, yet.

Also on another note, I just figured Burnham had that conversation with him explaining everything which is why he knows what Georgiou is talking about here. I don't see it as a nod to fans or anything. Of course I'm one of those who doesn't need everything written and acted out on screen. My mind is happy to fill in said blank spots. I used to write fanfiction so that's probably why though.

I liked the episode, and it went pretty fast. It had no surprises though. I kinda figured this was going to happen from that one clip of Pike with Xahea up in the background. Just by his tone of voice. And as usual, I ADORE Spock. That was a real surprise for me this season as I was so skeptical of a new Spock, but I love Peck's portrayal. I still think he steals every scene he is in. :adore: I'm really holding out hope for a Pike and crew series.

It’s interesting that first 15-20 pages is all gushing after each episode. It takes a while for the critical thinking part of the reviews to start pouring in.

Leaving aside any number of early lukewarm reactions posted in those first 5-20 pages, can we not do the thing where enjoying something equals a lack of critical thinking? What's interesting about critical thinking is that it doesn't imply a positive or negative orientation to information. You can both positively critique and negatively critique media. Equating negatively critical comments with critical thinking would be inaccurate.

Didn't "Saints of Imperfection" establish that spore jumping kills / harms the May lifeforms that live in the network?

I think we're meant to think that it was Culber who was causing the damage, especially as he came out when the Disco passed through.

Ways the crew could have solved this without time travel.

1) Spore Drive to jump somewhere Control would never be able to find them. (Seriously space is ginormous)
2) Spore Drive to jump to Spacedock and pull the computer core.
3) Beam over a photon torpedo on a 1 second delayed timer.
4) Keep shooting the ship till it's shields fail and then shoot it till it explodes.
5) Have someone beam over to the ship and shoot the warp core with a phaser rifle.

1) And let Control ravage the entire Federation? Not really Pike's style. They're trying to act quickly. And that's a pretty weak guarantee; Control can simply follow them.
2) How? The sphere IS the ship now. It's not going to Starbase if it doesn't want to.
3) How? The sphere could surely prevent this.
4) The ship could just warp away.
5) Whoops! You've been vented into space.

Put your positive comments back before page 15 or 20 where they belong....
;)

Whoops! Back into the shadows with me. ;)

That's exactly what it is.

Sarek and Amanda showing up really pushed credibility. I think some kind of mind talk would've made more sense. It also would be less likely that Control would follow them.
I was thinking it was going a be a Katric projection, but no.

  • Saru needs to become captain. I don't think Michael's ready, and I like her having autonomy to act as a catalyst.
  • Reno needs to not die. I feel like that's what they're setting up and I really need them to not do that, thanksmuch.

Thing is, I think Saru was ready before the transformation, but not so much now. As for Reno, yeah, I was getting that vibe about her dying too.

1) 30 ships vs 7000, Control isn't going to do shit to the Federation as a whole. And Control doesn't have a spore drive or the ability to get through the galactic barrier. So they jump the ship below the galactic plane and into the galactic void and there's literally no way Control will ever find them because we are talking a microscopic needle in a billion lightyear sized haystack.
2) Then you don't tell the ship you are going destroy the computer core after pulling it.
3) Being in the ship doesn't give it magic powers. Unless they beam the torpedo directly to the vessels transporter pad using Discovery's own transporter it won't know what's being beamed over until it materializes. At which point it's too late because the Torpedo would have detonated.
4) And the Enterprise can follow all the while shooting it.
5) Except it's too late because you already shot the warp core and the ship exploded.

To reiterate, being in the ships system does not give it magic and or psychic powers.

Didn't "Saints of Imperfection" establish that spore jumping kills / harms the May lifeforms that live in the network?
No. It was the fact Stamets LEFT Culber behind in the network for 9 months. Culber was what was 'killing' the lifeforms in the Network because he wouldn't let them kill/convert him. Once he was removed, the Network was fine.

Hell, it would have been pretty interesting to have a damn predator who still has a strong fear-and-running-complex!

I kinda feel they missed the ball with this one too. Real world predators generally hate taking risks that might result in them getting injured, hence why they will always try to target young, sick or weak animals. It would have been an interesting take to see Saru become some type of aggressive coward and have to work to overcome that.
