Star Trek Continues: Episode 3...

I wonder how they found the time for a refit of the I.S.S. Enterprise during Mirror, Mirror.
In "Mirror, Mirror" they used stock fotage of the ship from WNMHGB, but evidently it was supposed to be a replica of the series production version of the ship only they couldn't afford to redo the markings and shoot new footage. Same way as TOS-R replaced stock footage of the pilot versions of the ship throughout the series.

More to the episode: THAT...FREAKIN'...ROCKED!!! They kept true to their word. There were no references to anything outside of "Mirror, Mirror."

This was a lot of fun. The Mirror Kirk really is an ass and it's hard to imagine this guy getting as far as he did in that universe.

I loved the little bit at the beginning where the Prime Kirk makes his pitch. Nicely done!

I noticed this right off the bat too and wished they had used the "pilot" version of the ship. I know in TOS it was inconsistent but in the Remastered they purposefully used it and this would have made the ep consistent with both. I considered that they were going for a "the remastered wasn't around in the original season 4 thing but then they added the remastered effect to the agonizer. :) This really is an inconsequential nitpick, i'm just a ship guy so it stood out to me and I was kinda hoping. I was also curious, you can see in the side shots of the ship over the planet one of the nacelles appeared to droop at the rear which seems to happen with the physical models didn't know if this was intentional or just the camera angle making it look this way?

The episode itself was absolutely awesome! I loved it, can't say that enough. I did question whether TOS would have actually done one going back to directly following up on the episode in this way but that's not a complaint, just a question/observation. Everything was just spot on and they just did an awesome job! Only fan film series i've actually put on my drive to sit and watch in front of the tv like the real show rather than just checking it out on the computer...great stuff! Looking forward to more!

On another note the last time I was here was December 31 2010 apparently...I knew I was away awhile lol. Haven't ever gotten away from Trek really but lately have been trying to re immerse myself in it so here I am!

The only thing I could find wrong was the way the shuttle doors closed in final scene.

Well, honestly that is the way the doors worked, lol. If you look at the episode "Metamorphosis" when Kirk and company emerges from the shuttlecraft you can see the same unsmooth operation. Yes, we filmed with the original shuttlecraft and it was a blast!!! Glad you guys enjoyed the episode!

Yeah, well. Ok, I surrender.

As a nitpick I agree that I would have preferred seeing the pilot version of the ship, but it doesn't detract from the episode overall. I also noted the agonizer f/x and wish they hadn't done that because it is inconsistent with TOS, but again it doesn't detract from the overall effort.

My only other quibble was with how the photon torpedo spread was depicted. That really didn't look like what could have been done on TOS.

One thing this story depicted is how much smarter and adaptable the Prime Kirk is. He was thrown into a completely bizarre situation and quickly managed to navigate his way through it. The Mirror Kirk was thrown totally off balance even in his universe when things weren't going as expected.

Another nice episode, unfortunately - as I feared - another bottle show and very short as well. Which is no surprised, as you could predict the ending very early on. There was not one surprise in there, where you might think an alternate universe is the perfect ground for that.

All pretty much "been there, done that". The technical aspects are mostly very good, the sets (except Kirks wobbly desk), the lighting. The editing had some continuity problems (camera angles, vfx continuity, performance differences) that could have been avoided, but nothing major.

Actingwise - Chris Doohan beats them all, and the lady that play the Captains wife was superb. Vignonas overacting was sometime unbearable (in part probably because the role needs that overacting, but it was too much) - and while Todd Haberkorn puts out a very solid performance, I can´t get over him not looking the part. Luckily, McCoy and McCenna were almost not in the episode.

I especially enjoyed the Shuttle sequence - congratulations on using the original shuttle, I hope other productions will do so, too.

So, another solid episode, but I really hope they take off now with some fresh stories and do not rehash old elements.

I, too, would have liked to see them use the full fifty minute running time but, for now, I'm stumped to think of what else they could have put in there. I don't feel like it was really missing anything.

That crossed my mind for just a second...but then it occurred that we never saw the Enterprise carpet-bomb a planet before, so I'm fine with it! :)

Yeah, but knowing the limitations of f/x on TOS and how labour involved it was I can't imagine it would have looked anything like that.

You could spend the rest of your life doing a little of this, a little of that, and fixing tiny little nirdles. But then, you've spent your whole life on one thing.

I think this was written and produced on the same level as most of TOS. Not much could be done to make it a better episode.

I noticed time wise it was a bit shorter as well but really didn't feel it in the episode, maybe because of how much I liked it but think I prefer being a little shorter to putting in filler to take up time and mess up the pace.

Agreed.

Also agreed.

Yeah, but knowing the limitations of f/x on TOS and how labour involved it was I can't imagine it would have looked anything like that.

Most likely, the original series would've shown a couple of torpedoes fire from the ship, and a bridge shot with (most likely) a flash of light from the front of the bridge, and Kirk and Co. briefly shielding their eyes. Had they done that here, there would be criticisms of "They didn't show it!".

Similarly...I'm not by any stretch of the imagination a JJ Abrams fan, but I really feel for him, and the criticism he's going to get from fanatical fans analyzing every single frame of the new Star Wars. The team behind Star Trek Continues is in a somewhat similar bind, and so far I've been happy with their fence-balancing.

(I'm not indirectly calling you a fanatic, Warped9 :) , you just made me think of that...and there's nothing, nothing on Earth that matches the level of fanaticism of a rabid Star Wars fan! :wtf: )

This was fun. I'm really glad they released it on Father's Day- I was able to guilt-trip my family into watching "Mirror, Mirror" and "Fairest of Them All" back-to-back. :)

What do we predict the next one is going to be? A Klingon story? Harry Mudd returns? More Tribbles?

Nice!!

To distinguish this series from the other productions, I'd prefer to see all-new material. It's a big galaxy!

I hope they don't go too overboard on the sequels; "Lolani" was a superb episode and showed just what the STC crew is capable of. I don't mind returning back from time to time to revisit characters or stories from TOS, but I want to see Vic and crew exercise their storytelling chops.

We've had Apollo and gone back to the Mirror Universe. It's been fun, but I'd rather they get back to something fresh like "Lolani." No more revisits for awhile, please.

If it's a fresh story with new characters then I could see some Klingons being in it. That said I think I'd rather they go with a new Klingon character (or two or three) rather than revisiting past characters.

I will say it would be awesome if they could pull off a story with some real humour in it like "Shoreleave." And I don't mean revisiting the Shoreleave planet or the gangster or the Mudd android planet. I mean something new but with some humourous elements to it. Bottom line it would be nice to have a planet story, period.

Still, so far I'm happy.

I agree. I was being a bit facetious.

Something like that would be nice. I'd also like to see something more like season one- when the stories varied between Western-style plots transposed into outer space and science fiction stories more akin to X Minus One and The Twilight Zone.

Edit to add: I suppose a better way of phrasing that would be to say that I'd like to see them draw inspiration from the old anthologized science fiction short stories and television westerns, rather than just drawing inspiration from Star Trek.

So what you're saying is ... you don't want to revisit previous stories? Is that an accurate interpretation?
Yes. From the beginning STC has said they wanted to continue where TOS left off. Well then accepting them at their word on this then they should be doing what TOS would have done and gone forward with new material.

It's highly unlikely TOS would have done a followup to "Who Mourns For Adonais?" It's equally (if not more so) unlikely they would have done a followup to "Mirror, Mirror.' Their attitude would more likely have been "been there, done that."

STC is 3 for 3 in terms of enjoyment and execution. But in genuine spirit of TOS then they are actually 1 for 3 with "Lolani." It's the episode that truly fits their stated intent at the beginning of this project.

I get that it can be fun to revisit the familiar, but if you're going to fulfill the intent of staying true to TOS then you have to follow through with what they most likely would have done.

Someone will trot out Harry Mudd being revisited. Okay, but that is ONCE out of three seasons. That says you can do it, but you certainly shouldn't be making a habit of it. In TOS we had the Klingons featured only a handful of times, and yet during the films they were everywhere. There was also the numerous episodes featuring Klingons in TNG and DS9 and ENT.

Now you're talking. :techman:

STC has shown that they can do sequel episodes, so that should (hopefully) take care of that.

Now they can move on to new stuff.
