Star Trek: Captain's Log: Jellico

I always figured, from how Ronny Cox played the character, that Jellico would be a perfectly nice guy if you met him in civilian life, but just isn't at his best when placed in a position of leadership. Though the way he's generally been portrayed in the books is... hard to reconcile with that.

More like Dick Jones from "RoboCop"...could've been worse, he could have had Kurtwood Smith rub out the Bajoran redshirt for her error.

It's weird what Dick Jones did to Ronny Cox's career. Before that role, he was consistently typecast as nice, sweet, agreeable guys. Getting the villain gig in RoboCop was a major departure for him. But ever since then, he's been typecast as the most awful, nasty guy around. And I think that's affected how people have perceived (and written) Jellico. Cox played him as a character in between his old nice-guy image and his modern mean-guy image, someone who had a mix of both, but that mean-guy image so dominates people's perception of Cox these days that it affects their perception of Jellico as a character and they only see the mean side.

In person Ronny Cox is much closer to his earlier characterization than his later ones. He's also a great musician and singer. Very nice guy. The first time I met him it was had to imagine him as Jellico or his later characters. I guess that's why it's called acting :rommie:

I liked how Leslie Wong was in there. :techman:

Incidentally, how do you change the skin preference on Memory Beta? I tried to edit a few pages on there and the damn page kept scrolling up to the top.

An interesting idea. I never really thought of Jellico in a civilian capacity. But I would imagine he would be the same. I don't think Jellico was all bad. In fact I agreed with some of his decisions, like Troi wearing a standard uniform. However, he was a bit brash, bullheaded, demanding, and could be condescending. Though I felt Riker was conscending to him and Jellico perhaps responded in kind. Both men were under pressure and didn't respond to it well.

He could also be very blunt, but at the same time he was right about stuff too. And he was a taskmaster, but possibly could be fair, or at least he could listen to reason, after a time. So I just assumed he was probably like that in 'real' life. I would've hated to be his kid. I would've respected him but probably not liked him. I wonder what his spouse was like.

^Well, as the character was written, I wouldn't disagree. But the way Cox played him, the way he delivered the lines, told me there was a nice guy under there, someone who was probably great with his grandkids, but who just didn't handle authority well. He softened the character from how he was written, made him more sympathetic than the script alone suggested. At least, I thought so.

^ I agree. I thought he made some interesting choices with that character; by the end, it made me wish the script was written with similar subtlety.

It's too bad that being a two parter the conflict couldn't have been a bit more subdued. A little more nuanced. It's like Jellico was costumed with a "Hate me!" sign on the back of his uniform.

Of course, any subtlety and nuance went out the window once PD got ahold of him.

Shit, just now remembered his Cohagen character from "Total Recall"! :)

I imagine Jellico was one of those kind of officers who was an officious ass who was taken to task by a senior officer and coached on the "getting to know you" chit-chat small talk (what form of dimunitive would you like to be addressed by, what do you think of this painting/drawing done by my son, etc), but who didn't really hew to it, like it was more forced than genuine.

The only reason I can figure how he got as far as he did was because whatever he lacked in empathy and cooperation he made up for in efficiency and tenacity. Kinda like Hyman G. Rickover in that regard.

Sadly, you don't anymore.

There is "monobook", which is similar to the old Wikipedia skin, but Wikia (the hosts) keep overriding things. I have been working with another few admins over on Memory Alpha to put together some stuff to make the new skin more palatable, but I haven't yet ported those things over to Memory Beta.

But to get back to topic... Any time JK Woodward wants to paint a Star Trek comic... count me in as a purchaser.

Hell, when they want to get back to doing some new Fallen Angel comics (hint hint), I'm in for that too!

I'm not sure I agree with you. The majority of the time we've seen Admiral Jellico has been in New Frontier, from Calhoun's perspective, during his and Calhoun's feud. Before that, in "Once Burned," and since their reconciliation prior to "After The Fall," he's more personable.

Got it the other day and I really liked it. KRAD and JKW are a comic book dream team! I'd love to see them produce some comics based on the IKS Gorkon. Hey KRAD...FIND A WAY TO MAKE IT HAPPEN ;)

:cardie: Huh, I've changed the skin to the one I had before the "new wikia look" without problems.

If that's the "monaco" skin, expect it to go away at the start of November. If you're using monobook, you may get bumped over to the "new wikia look" again at that time. They seem to believe in the carpet bombing approach to things there.

Yeah, it's the monaco skin. Sorry to hear that they're eliminating all skins except the new one, which is really annoying. :scream:

Going back to the comic, passable story (C grade) and passable art but nothing to write home about.

Bought this the other day. I don't usually buy comics book so was a bit surprised by the shortness of the story but it was ok. One thing that interested me was the times of the three shifts: 00:00, 08:00 and 16:00. Sort of contrasts where I work which is in a 24 hour set-up and our breakdown is usually 06:00, 14:00 and 22:00. I suppose the difference is I work on earth where the sun's cycle impacts on my life, whereas on a spaceship it is constantly dark outside so the body could adapt better.
