Star Trek Brings In $7 Million Thursday Night

Re: Deadline Hollywood : ST makes US$7m on Thursday

Looks like this movie is an EPIC FAIL!

What are you talking about, it made almost double what Wolverine and Iron man did on a similar night time sneak preview schedule.

Re: Deadline Hollywood : ST makes US$7m on Thursday

7 million is very good when you consider Iron Man, only one or two showings during that time and the fact the Thursday showings were not advertised at all.

Re: Deadline Hollywood : ST makes US$7m on Thursday

Star Trek Nemesis also made 7 million (on a Friday though, with 2,700 screens). ;)

Noted. That's just sad Nemesis, sad. More Trekkers showed on Thursday's two time slots (7pms and 9pms) compared to a nationwide Friday for Nemesis.

[Q

Twice that of Iron Man? That's one heck of a start.

Lets take these numbers in perspective. Star Trek had more screens on thursday than IM did. Also IM was not in Imax, where the cost is greater.

Hey, if all those factors somehow meant that Star Trek did the same as Iron Man anyway, that's still a good omen.

So yes, let's talk about perspective indeed :)

So the 7 million reflects 7 and 9 pm, not the 12.01 showing?

Eh, there is conflicting reports. Saw one that said yes, one that said no.

I'm going to go with that is the entire pot. Variety said it was. Thanks for the correction.

GAH! I have no idea! Now most articles seem to be not adding the midnight showings to this total. Here is what EW said. http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2009/05/star-treks-open.html

The film bowed at 7 p.m. Thursday night and grossed an impressive $7 million in 3,849 locations.

And another one from LA Times: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/ent...on-at-box-office-rips-wolverine-opening-.html

Paramount's reboot of the classic franchise grossed between $7 million and $8 million from Thursday evening and midnight shows, according to knowledgeable industry source. That's bigger than last year's "Iron Man," which sold about $5 million of tickets on a comparable Thursday opening and went on to make $102.1 million by Sunday.

More notably, one person with access to box-office data said today that "Star Trek" had already sold about $3 million worth of tickets by this morning. That's twice as big as "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," which opened to $85 million, at the same point last week.

All of them love to point out the devoted fan base probably caused it.

As an aside I really enjoyed an article discussing box office success entitled: 'Virgins Eagerly Await Star Trek' Guess it must be because of all the hot people that show up to Star Trek movies.

I HATE the term "bowed" for an opening.

I always think that means a closing, since performers bow when they finish and leave. It just connotes :finishing" in my mind and ALWAYS sounds very odd.

I think the Variety article says it all. $7 million is a great number for Thursday showings, but can't really make a prediction for the rest of the weekend based on that.

As with "Star Trek," Par opened "Iron Man" on a Thursday night in May 2008. "Iron Man" grossed north of $4 million in Thursday evening/midnight runs on its way to grossing $102.1 million for the weekend.

Based on tracking, Par, along with some of its rivals, doesn't expect "Star Trek" to come close to "Iron Man's" opening gross, or even the $85 million earned by "Wolverine" last weekend. Nonetheless, a number of films have overperformed in recent months.

While alot of fans went last night, there are many of us who hold off, not wanting to do the whole fan thing.

I myself am not going until Sunday afternoon. I like to give it a day or two for the worst crazies to have gotten their fill. :D

Re: Deadline Hollywood : ST makes US$7m on Thursday

But it's start is less than stellar for hi-end Sci-Fi

Not so. Seven million dollars is remarkable for an opening Thursday. It's twice what Iron Man did. Star Wars is always an outlier, even if that movie did suck.

I can see the concern about the possibility that "the fan base" all turned out early, though. Guess we'll have a sense of that by tomorrow afternoon.

No, it didn't. IM's number did not include midnight showings. ST's number does include them. So, they actually aren't comparable without additional information.
