Star Trek Brings In $7 Million Thursday Night

Re: Deadline Hollywood : ST makes US$7m on Thursday

Looks like this movie is an EPIC FAIL!

Disagree. Although the theater I saw it in last night had only about 12 people in it, I chalk it up to most folks not knowing that the movie came out a day early. I didn't even know. I was going to see Wolverine but happened to see that they were offering Star Trek.

I'm not a huge fan of it myself, but the buzz on this movie is really good, unlike Watchmen. It'll do well and it'll have legs.

Re: Deadline Hollywood : ST makes US$7m on Thursday

ST opened at 7pm on Thursday. It has already made 7m which is a great number. IM only did like 1.5 million

ROTS had midnight showings and all of Thursday. Plus its SW

But Star Trek is Star Trek, is it not? Or are you implying that Trek doesn't have the pizazz, panache, and sex appeal of Star Wars?

Re: Deadline Hollywood : ST makes US$7m on Thursday

Don't get me wrong guys I want this movie to do well at the box office, SW ROTS Thursday showing is hard to compare because it included the midnight showing on Wednesday and all of Thursdays sales for over $50 million. So really you can't compare Thursday to Thursday here. You could do a Friday to Friday match up though. That would be more even. Which is $33 million.

I don't think it's a useful comparison - that Star Trek's numbers will approach those of a Star Wars movie this time around is wishful thinking.

Re: Deadline Hollywood : ST makes US$7m on Thursday

Very encouraging numbers on it's first night of limited release. These showings were limited (not shown all day) and considered advanced screenings.

To put this in perspective Iron Man made $4 million dollars under the same set of circumstances.

Star Trek looks to open strong out of the gate. Not "Star Wars" or "Spiderman" strong, but very solid for a franchise many considered dead only a couple of years ago.

Great reviews and word of mouth will give this film legs that a movie like "Wolverine" will not have.

FRIDAY 10:50 AM: Sources tell me that Thursday screenings starting at 7 PM, including midnight shows, made approximately $7 million for Star Trek. "There was a big core fan turnout," one of my insiders says, "so you can't extrapolate to weekend numbers." Nevertheless, it's a great start. But there are still cautionary words around Hollywood that Star Trek could still wind up the next Watchmen (i.e. disappointing) because of the built-in fan basem the big presales, the Imax heat. I don't get such talk. Way different movies, especially with JJ Abrams' reboot garnering all those critical raves. As for today, expect early matinee numbers to be very high. But Hollywood won't be able to get a real handle on Friday's figures until the late afternoon or early evening. So stay tuned.

The Watchmen was very dark and depressing. Star Trek feels like a summer blockbuster, really it is quite different.

[Q

Twice that of Iron Man? That's one heck of a start.

Lets take these numbers in perspective. Star Trek had more screens on thursday than IM did. Also IM was not in Imax, where the cost is greater.

Re: Deadline Hollywood : ST makes US$7m on Thursday

In his update from last night, this website picked Star Trek to do $75 million opening weekend and do about $8 million on Thursday night...

So with the movie doing $7 million that is almost on par with those #'s...
Obviously Thursday night's aren't that big of a movie night for most people.
now if Friday's take is also $7 million, then that would be cause to panic :)

Re: Deadline Hollywood : ST makes US$7m on Thursday

Not a lot of people in my theater. I'd been trying to avoid spoilers and the like, so I didn't realize that there were fairly normal hour Star Trek screenings on Thursday until I checked for a midnight screening, and was surprised to see them.

Hopefully that means that lots of people didn't realize they could see it on Thursday, and they all show up Friday. But based on the lack of a crowd, I'm a bit worried.

It'll make more than Nemesis at least :)

No i'm not SW right now just appeals to more people. This new film is changing that.

BTW TF did 8.8 in its previews , it was heavily promoted. Barely anyone new Trek was opening on Thursday

Re: Deadline Hollywood : ST makes US$7m on Thursday

Steve Mason has reported rival studios have said anywhere from 6.5 to 8 million

So sounds like the 7 million is a good average of the studio estimates. Would be great if it was really 8 million though!

Re: Deadline Hollywood : ST makes US$7m on Thursday

Judging from what I saw this morning, I think today might surprise some people. I went to the 10:30am show this morning and there were only a handful of empty seats. When I got out there was a considerable line at th ticket window and the board already showed a few showings sold out.

Re: Deadline Hollywood : ST makes US$7m on Thursday

Well to be fair, how many people knew it was coming out on a Thursday? I would've had no idea if I didn't pop into the cinema to see what times it was showing on the Friday/Saturday.

Re: Deadline Hollywood : ST makes US$7m on Thursday

I'm hoping it does extremely well financially, even though I'm personally turned off by what I've seen and read about the movie itself.

The critics love it and the fans love it (based on our current poll), so the big question remaining is, will the rest of the film going audience love it. We won’t know that until the weekend is over, but the numbers are in for Thursday and they are very good. Star Trek racked up $7 million dollars last night in domestic tickets sales.

More after the jump...

I see nothing on Box Office Mojo about this.

And do we need yet ANOTHER box office thread?

Very True, I invited a few people to come with me (my group ended up being 15 people) but several wouldn't come because they didn't believe that it started at 7pm and they thought I was lying or something... they are going tonight...
