Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

I'm sure there's more to marketing than billboards and trailers. What we see is only the tip of the iceberg.
If we don't see it, it's not really marketing, is it?
What differentiates Star Trek from Fast and Furious is the characters and what they are going through.
I agree - F&F has better character development. :)
Yeah, like seeing the Kobayashi Maru scene in ST09, or the reactor scene in STID to name just 2 out of several. Were these scenes 'never going to happen' either?
Well, they did happen, and no-one ever said they wouldn't. References to previous movies is different to the exact ship from TMP being resurrected as the hero ship for NuTrek.

That's a good point. Where did that $120 million go? There were like two trailers and a teaser, and...billboards?

International tours by multiple main cast members would have been a bit of that.

Pine, Quinto, Cho and Urban made multiple TV and radio appearances in Australia, for instance, and Lin was around for at least the premiere.

In the TNG days, we got McFadden for Insurrection and nobody for Nemesis.

Love the colors :techman:

The lines are pretty graceful, and it's an interesting angle for the nacelles, which I like as well. The primary and secondary hulls match up very well in terms of their lines.
It looks exactly like a ship that realized where its greatest vulnerabilities were, and removed them from the design. "Hey, they tore right through that thin, graceful neck! Let's make the upgrade have that same thin, graceful neck and just hope it doesn't happen again!" would have been exactly wrong from a design point of view.

Also, I like the design.

Quite true. I've been following trek box office and marketing for 30 years. This is by far the most marketing trek has ever had.
Indeed. Too bad this has been such a disappointing year for big budget movies. I think if Beyond had been shown in 2012, it would have obliterated every box office record it ever had.

Beyond box office finally updated. $337,718,03. 2 weeks left till Japan.
That's not bad, but considering the overwhelmingly positive response, I was hoping for more. The movie deserves it.

Having those scenes in NuTrek, and having an interpretation of the refit vessel at the end of the Beyond are the same bag to me, filed under the category 'fanwank'

So the real question is.. Will this increase the China theater count, because it's very small now. There are no details about that yet. If it does, then it'll possibly add maybe $5 or $10 million to the China total. If not it'll be a negligible effect.

This, it's already out of gas in China. Whatever it scrapes in from a small theater count is not going to make much of a dent in the overall take. I've heard that this is more due to China moving to abandon it's artificial "1 month limit" on movies. Pets and Ice Age recently got similar extensions even though they are almost meaningless in the grand scheme of it all.

That likely includes distribution costs and overseas marketing too. If you are trying to boost your box office in other countries you can't just market in the US. That is probably towards the lower end of what you would expect from a $180 million dollar movie. With all the big promotions they did in China, Australia, the UK, etc. I think a large portion of that budget was spent overseas.

The largest and possibly most ineffective per dollar spent. It's not how much you spend (which was still low for a movie of this expense) but how well you reach your target audience. Everyone seemed to know when the 2009 reboot was coming out whether they went to see it or not. A great deal of people STILL don't realize a Star Trek came out this year. And it's not just about reaching your audience, it's selling a film to excite that audience. I think the marketing fell short in both areas.

Indeed. Too bad this has been such a disappointing year for big budget movies. I think if Beyond had been shown in 2012, it would have obliterated every box office record it ever had.

Wishful thinking. It looks like much of the foreign success of STID was due to Benedict Cumberbatch's worldwide appeal. Put STB in it's place and maybe domestic would have been close or perhaps a bit better but foreign gross wouldn't have peaked the way it did. It's not like STB or any sequel is going to match the nostalgia factor of the first reboot and no one in the cast has much international appeal. It seems like a lot of casual Star Trek fans who went to see ST09 simply aren't compelled to go see a new ST release every 3 years.

That didn't stop any of these movies:

Captain America: Civil War: $1,153 million
The Jungle Book: $966 million
Batman v Superman: $873 million
Deadpool: $782 million
Suicide Squad: $739 million
The Mermaid: $553 million
X-Men: Apocalypse: $543 million

And that's not including Zootopia, Finding Dory and The Secret Life of Pets and all the 2016 movies not yet released.

  • We've covered this before look at the genres. Animated kids movies still do well in down years. Super hero movies are the current "in" movie.
  • Beyond did quite well though not great. 500+ movies released this year and it's 9th domestically and 19th worlwide(closing in on 18th). I'd say that's very good.
  • The statistics still show box office continuing an overall down trend, even China, through October. September is also down. The "hot" movie in dept are making half the opening of Beyond.. So much for the odd, uninformed idea of releasing Beyond in September.

I think JJ lost this popular momentum after ST 09. The general audience, fans were looking for space adventure, much more Klingons, battles, exploration in the second movie. And Beyond has had a very troubled production.

A "troubled production" can still result in a good movie. Star Trek Beyond is proof of this.

Not to get into a whole thing about it...
