Star Trek Anthology Series

A series concept my wife came up with, which at first I discounted, but hey...I think could work?

Star Trek Anthology..
Kind of like TWILITE ZONE. There would be no regulars...just independent episodes, like Twilite Zone, that tell some kind of SCIFI story in the hour long episode. They could take place at any point of TREK's history (TOS-VOY). But the stories would be scifi in its's intent. Like when you would watch TWILITE ZONE for the first time and say, after it was over, wow...that was cool.

Just a thought...if someone else has suggested this already then I apologize if I have stepped on your previous post.

This is one of the perennial favorite suggestions, yes. I doubt it will ever happen since it would require new actors to be hired and new sets built all the time - not cost-effective - and the conventional wisdom (which is probably right) in the TV biz is that your audience tunes in each week mainly to watch characters they are emotionally invested in. That's why the anthology format is so rare and usually flops when tried.

The idea of having one place where all the action takes place - but with different characters - like a large space station where people are always passing through - is interesting. That would solve the cost-effectiveness problem of not being able to re-use sets.

Yeah..you're probably right. I might have gone with GREEN SCREEN tech, but the recent BAB5 DVD showed me that, right now, it still has a long way to go...

A cost effective way to do this would be to set all of the anthology stories in the same time period on different (but identical) ships. That way they could reuse sets, props, costumes.

For instance, they could do a series featuring man's first missions to the stars in the late 21st century. 'Star Trek' meets 'From the Earth to the Moon'.. featuring celebrity guest stars.

It might not work as a long running series, but it could make one hell of a television event.

Sounds like more of the same old boring formulaic alien/malfunction/crisis of the week that was a staple of pretty much every series but DS9.

The key to this show, as I see it, wouldn't really depend on when it takes place or who is in it. Just some crazy ass plots like TWILITE ZONE that sometimes don't even make any sense but make you go...hmmmmm..that was different.

why just TOS to VOY?

have it at the best times in history.. 2370-80s, 2150's and 1980-90's thats when intresting things happened in the Trekverse..

Yeah, I totally agree. As long as there was someway to tell it took place in the TREK universe, at any time, it would be cool. But the key part would be getting some real cutting edge scifi writers, if there are any. And also a great budget/casting director so as to attract top notch guest stars..

"write it, & they will come."

Why not just create something via the Fan Production route & see if anyone at Paramount-Viacom starts sniffing around? (One of their old writers, producers, et al.)

BUMP!!! Let's get your anthology started!

I do remember this thread..and I still think it would work. A different episode, each week, from any time line, anywhere in the TREKverse....and just have some creepy episodes now and then, throw in some time-travel stuff, some great acting..writing..could be done and done well. And I think I'd put it on HBO so they could even be edgy...

DS9 was mostly this formula as well. They deviated from it for a small handful of (very good) episodes, but most of that show wasn't much different than TNG and VOY.

Robert: Get yourself a webspace & get the anthology started. I'd love to create a banner for her in MS Paint.

Not a bad idea Hellsgate...we could invite the various fic writers we have here to post stand alone stories, about anything, in the star trek universe any time....and even new writers. I'll think about it some more and get back to you...

(ssssppp..send me a private email when you have the chance...)

Why not direct the writers to my own anthology & submit your own work, too. That's what "S.T.: New Worlds" is for. Just set up your own webspace for ".html" versions of your own stories, I can link to, from my own anthology.

I'm going to check your site out when I get home, Jason. I can't at work right now, but I will. I have no problem joining your site..sounds like fun. Do you accept outside material??

Rob

The best anthology series I've ever seen is one called "Into the West" It wasn't really like TLZ. What they did was follow two groups of people whose stories will eventually intertwine -- the Lakota Souix tribe and the Wheeler family. Eventually they all meet, in fact they meet several times -- including one Wheeler saving an indian from slavery and marrying her.

That might work, maybe as part of a civil war kind of idea -- you have both sides and hear both sides of the story, and gradually they come together and have to fight or something.

Yes, outside material is VERY MUCH accepted (with content warnings at the top of the page if it has slash, "NC-17" explicit violence and/or sexual language, etc.)

:techman:I'm all for it.

Would be a  direction to go in. Mrs. Scorpio thinks like me.

Well over 2 years ago, maybe even 3 years ago:confused: I posted basically this same topic advocating a ST anthology series. I may have posted that in GenTrek as I don't remember if FoT existed as a separate forum way back then or not.

So what? Me & your wife are no doubt 2 of dozens, if not hundreds, of ST aficionados who've come up with that very concept, or something similar.
