Star Trek: Academy

ITDUDE

Maybe, finally? After all these years?

What should it be called?
Star Trek: Academy
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy
Star Trek: Cadets
Star Trek Into Studies
Star Trek: 101
Anything else?

Should it be on network, Cable, Premium, Streaming?

PG-13 or R? R would be fucking cool.

Arc or serialized?

What century should they set it in?

I have been waiting for this show for 20 freaking years since first rumors started. Gimme gimme gimme!

Whilst the idea of an Academy series is interesting they're going to have to give it some serious thought and work, since cadets won't be off on starships for years saving the galaxy but on Earth studying and training, so the main focus of the series will be the characters, their tales and dynamics, which could just descend into teeny angst drama.

They could always adapt the Susan Wright novel "The Best and the Brightest" and make a mini-series out of it, though move it forward in time so it's not retreading the events of TNG and DS9 to help it stand on its own two feet.

I don’t think that any of these shows will show up anywhere else than on All Access. (In the US)
If all access still exists by the time this show gets on air. I wouldn't mind it at all if this went on Netflix though.

I don't know if I like the idea of this being a CW-type show. Something in-between Ender's Game and Red Squad from Valiant for the action would be perfect. For non-action parts, perhaps they can do something like Kirk/Uhura interactions in ST09 (all min and a half of it) for fun side.

Kids-Trek sound irritating. I dislike the concept already.
Not Kid-Trek, teenage cadet Trek. No one wants Muppets from Space but a serious take on Starfleet Academy.

For non-fun side, put in the timeline few years right after end of DS9 with couple of Cardassians joining Starfleet Academy. There would still be a lot of racial tensions against Cardassians which attacked Earth few years ago.

Star Trek: Delta House :techman:
If it really will be about teenagers, then yes, it needs to have some wild fun stuff. It can't be all dark and serious all the time. But I don't want it to be pure comedy at all times.
Maybe kind of like Buffy? Fun and adventures at times, freaking dark at others.

I see this bombing.

We saw the entrance exam to the academy, we saw some of it with Wesley.

Star Fleet isn’t going to be exposing its cadets to mortal danger on a weekly basis, so there’s no drama potential there.

It’s a free and diverse society, and social science should have progressed to the point where adolescent issues aren’t so pronounced. So there’s another avenue for tension gone.

Right on social commentary that draws attention to important issues of our time, so prevalent in Young Adult Material, would be out of place in a world that’s already sorted them.

You could generate tension by having loose cannon characters, but not at star fleet academy. They only take the best.

That pretty much leaves studying, exams, and relationship problems.

They always can do show about Terran Imperial Academy. Just imagine. Murders every week, bullying everyday, F-bombs everywhere, a lot of sex and unnecessary nudity...

Or about USS Valiant. Path of Death and Destruction, Nog and Sisko Junior cameo...

Or even better - about ISS Valiant! Murders every week, bullying everyday, F-bombs everywhere, a lot of sex and unnecessary nudity...

Oh wait

For me, I've overdosed on angsty, coming-of-age stuff throughout the years.I suppose it doesn't have to be tethered to earth exactly but it just has too many things working against it for me to be that interested in the prospect.

Agreed. Of course the show-runners could've conceived a series about a bunch of Academy Cadets who are marooned on a different quadrant/galaxy, running their ship on their own as all the adult officers are killed by the aliens who were responsible for their ship getting stranded.

But IMO that's basically a recycling of previous Trek series by merging the "Valiant" episode of DS9 and "Voyager" so I don't think a series adopting this plot would've lasted for long :confused:

Why does everyone assume that the Campus on Earth is the only one? That would never be enough to staff an organization as large as Starfleet. I'm pretty sure there are several Academys throughout the Federation. They might as well put a Starfleet Academy-Show on an alien world on the outskirts of known space with a (Sci-Fi-)secret - a new Starfleet site, recently and hastly opened. We could follow a group of diverse cadets uncovering a secret starfleet operation or whatever. There are lots of possibilities.

I'm not sure that an Academy show would be that hot without them getting into space, once in a while, on training cruises where TWoK type action and adventure happens. To just have the show be like another Everything Sucks, or whatever, might reveal the need for more razamataz. But I like the idea of the show focusing on young dreamers reaching for the stars as they compete with themselves and eachother to find out who's future in STAR TREK shines brightest. Finding love and making friends -- and drama -- along the way ...

Make it a Star Trek version of Smallville and I'm happy. Cadets Kirk, Spock, McCoy and Uhura saving the galaxy between classes.
