STAR TREK 4 BACK ON! Noah Hawley to write and direct

I've said it before and I'll say it again, with regard to "fan writers": In Nick Meyer's biography, his recollection of Star Trek when he was first asked to write the second move was, "That's the one with the guy with the ears, right?" He went on to make what's near-unanimously considered the best film of the franchise across the entire fanbase.

'Nuff said.

I opened the thread thinking you guys had posted some new not-news here such as, idk, rumors about Ang Lee making the next movie with Alexandre Desplat handling the ost.
I'm disappointed.
That could be an idea for a new thread - 'What's the best Trek movie news you can think of'

Obviously Tarantino was incredible and unexpected.. its hard to top that but..maybe Nicolas Meyer back as director and writing either a prime set movie or Kelvin cast movie.. or Ridley Scott just suddenly decides he wants to make a Star Trek film so Paramount is like 'ok' ..

There is this new rumor from everyone's favorite site and most reliable source ;)
https://wegotthiscovered.com/movies/jennifer-lawrence-reportedly-eyed-major-role-star-trek-4/amp/

I'd be on board with kelvin Number One ( my headcanon is she's the captain of another ship) but I'd pick an older actress.

They continue to use this quote, that they've used like 50 times now, to justify their 'facts':

"We Got This Covered has heard from our sources – the same ones that told us a Discovery movie was on the way and that a Captain Pike spinoff is in development, both of which have been confirmed now..."

Repeating a lie 50 times will not suddenly make it true, dumbasses.

We got this covered = We post bullshit for clicks.

I have noticed lol it's funny they use their own speculations as sources.

to be fair, I read other sites assuming the Pike series and Discovery movie are a sure thing even though no official announcement was made. It's possible they want to make a tv movie for cbs access, but it would be a spin off of Discovery, I think, because it honestly would feel redundant to me otherwise. I dunno what they'd even need a movie for when it comes to those characters when they already have a whole series and possible new seasons to add.
As for the Pike series, it's one of those 'careful what you wish for' things for fans. It seems contradictory for them to free themselves of the 'continuity trap' with Discovery only to fall in that trap again, and worse, with another prequel series. Pike and Spock got enough space in Discovery for me and we already know how it's going to end for them both.
I get they need to get more subscriptions but it feels like oversaturation for me.
But then again, I don't personally have the patience to follow many tv-shows like I used to, let alone many series from the same franchise. I'd rather watch something completely new from different genres too. It's like with the movies, it isn't too wise to release a new one about space right when there are already 3 other movies like that getting released in the same season.

Who knows what's going to happen with the current pandemic, anyway :( The future is uncertain. Like the rest of the world, Hollywood&co's productions have stopped too and when, hopefully, this nightmare finally ends, I feel a lot of projects that were announced or were in the works will get ditched because it won't be possible to just restart everything at once. So many things may change in the meantime, funds may not be available anymore, investors and producers can change. It isn't easy. They all lost 2020 for sure.
I think a lot of movies and shows will get the short end of the stick and I genuinely feel for the many people working behind the scenes that may lose their job.

I remember a rumour back (post Trek 09 I think it was) that Jennifer Lawrence was tipped to play a rival Starfleet captain, who clashes with Kirk in what would have been the follow up movie (now STiD).

Pretty sure I read about this rumour indirectly on these boards... but I could be misremembering.

Does anyone remember that one?

Edit: if that is an actual past rumour, I wouldn’t be surprised if it were the same site reconstituting it again... but that’s a big if, and dependent on whether I’m not just imagining things...

I can't recall seeing that particular rumor here. Some idle speculation about casting Jennifer Lawrence, yes, or her name coming up in wishful-thinking "actors we'd like to see" threads, but that's about it.

I can't see a DSC big screen movie happening. I mean, maybe in a Kelvin crossover scenario, but then it's really just a Kelvin timeline movie that just happens to have Discovery involved. The original series and TNG are the only Trek series that have ever had a big enough following to sustain a movie franchise.

Thanks for confirming that.

I did search but couldn’t find anything concrete, so no substance whatsoever to be found (there was a daily mail article about Jaylahs character being inspired by Lawrence in Winter’s Bone, but that was all).

The article doesn’t view the last two Trek films very favorably, going so far as citing Beyond as a “failed franchise title”. Ouch. Looks like Paramount is in a bit of an uphill battle with all this right now.

It's Forbes. Everything about Star Trek which appears there is written by one guy. No matter what the title of the article says, Scott Mendelson's remarks re: Star Trek are dependably and consistently negative. After you've read a couple of his pieces, you pretty much already know what he's going to say in the next one. (Or five. Or ten.)
