Star Trek 3

MalNar

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
This film hass lots of exposition, and it doesnt exactly have a lot of action early on. One thing I noticed though, is the acting is so good, that you can't help but get into the drama

question: is the security officer that arrests McCoy the same actor that plays Admiral morrow?

No. Conroy Gedeon, IIRC. I saw him in something on TV quite recently, looking much older.

actor that plays Admiral morrow?

Robert Hooks, who was unavailable for ST IV, so the character eventually became Admiral Cartwight.

Yeah, in my 4 year old state of development when it came out, I thought Morrow and security dude were the same guy.

And the OP is right, this film really does open with a lot of exposition. The only real action prior to stealing the Enterptise is the BOP's potshot on the mercenary ship.

Yeah, they couldn't do a Trek film like this these days. Although, to be honest, Nemesis only had one action piece for the entire first half of the film (and see how much the fans liked that).

I still think TSFS hangs together quite well.

There isn't much prlonged, shoot 'em up action in TSFS for the most part, them more I think of it.

Stealing the ship is exciting but the fact that Excelsior is sabotaged rather than pitting the ships against each other cuts some of the action down.

The BOP vs. Grissom is no battle at all, just one "lucky shot".

The Enterprise vs. BOP battle is also fairly limited, one shot each.

The ship's destruction, fight on the surface, and BOP escape provide the only extended action of the film.

Compared to TWOK, TUC, and FC, the action is much lighter. Even TVH had some action with the probe's destruction and the crew teams working toward their goals.

The movie would be a good episode, but as a movie these days the story is a little lacklustre.

It is, however, one of my top 3 movies in the trek series.

My only nitpick with the movie is that Starfleet didn't send a ship after the Enterprise. I guess they sent the Excelsior, but Scotty sabotaged it, and the Enterprise got away. One could surmise that rather than send a ship, they'd just let the Grissom deal with it. Oh wait, the Grissom went boom. Oops.

It could be that there wasn't any other ship in the area. Remember starfleet wasn't as big during the time of Kirk, at least that's not the impression I got.

^ That whole, "we're the only ship in the sector" and "there are no other ships in range" stuff is so played out.

Agreed. It worked fine on the TV show, because the ship was already in deep space, so it made sense that it might be the closest ship. However, when in Earth orbit... where the heck is the rest of Starfleet? :wtf:

Nah, but you know, all black folk look the same. :wtf: :wtf:

I'm not sure what you are trying to imply here, but the first couple of times I saw TSFS I too thought that the Officer arresting Bones was Admiral Morrow. I don't think it has anything to do with skin color, rather than the mustache.

Beaker was just using an old American joke. Supposedly, "unenlightened" people of one race think most people of another race look alike, because they can't look past the superficial racial characteristics. It's an archaic, cynical joke, and it should be retired, IMO. However, I still hear Americans of various races joking about it.

BTW, I never mixed up those two characters. It has nothing to do w/ what I wrote above. I just never confused them for some reason, but I guess they do look a little similar. It never came to my attention before.

I know exactly what he meant, I just wasn't sure if it was meant as a joke or not. I don't want to be called a racist just because I have accidentially confused two characters in a movie who happen to look somewhat similar. And that was many years ago!
