Star Trek 2017 will not be set in the JJ-Verse

It's a direct continuation, though both Russel T. Davies and Steven Moffat have both retconned some stuff from the original run, the biggest one so far being the 13 regenerations limit.

That isn't an a retcon - a retcon is when they claim something has always been the case. So if they started the series and the Doctor had unlimited regenerations and the characters treated it as if that had always been the case, that would be a retcon. The Doctor gains more regeneration as a plot point via the intervention of the Timelords- it's not a retcon.

Indeed, it's a Deus ex machina, or a 'hand wave', but it's not a retcon. Who sired Spike on BtVS? Angel as originally stated, or Drusilla as per a much later flashback? That's a retcon.

The doctor having only one heart in the original series is an actual retcon.

Wow, really? School Reunion in season 2 with Sarah Jane and K9, Season 3s Human Nature with the Journal of Impossible Things with the drawings of all the previous doctors, the Macra in Gridlock, then full on pictures of the other Doctors in The Next Doctor. I think you could make that argument for Season 1, but once Season 2 started there were plenty of links back to the classic series.
Sorry, I was thinking more "reboot" more in the sense that the Doctor's character was updated, i.e. falling in love with Companions, bragging about sexual exploits with historical figures/"bad girls", not so much that they mentioned previous characters and events, which would be expected of a soft reboot.
Something which is likely to happen with the new Trek show, which could unequivocally state it takes place in the Prime continuity, and then gleefully ignore whatever aspects of that continuity are dated or no longer desired.

The new bridge crew VR game that comes out in Autumn is in the JJ-Verse of production design on the bridge. This is 3 months before the new series starts.

I don't really see what that has to do with the new show. I wouldn't expect them to stop doing tie ins to the movies just because the show is coming out.

A great way to please no-one?

I can say, with 99% certainty, that if the new series is in the JJ-verse I won't be watching. I'd probably check out the pilot, simply to see it, but if that doesn't grip me then I doubt I'd watch any more (I'm not making the Broken Bow mistake again).

So in other words, if you like the pilot you will be watching it, even if it's set in the "JJ-Universe"?

I have an extremely low opinion of the JJ-verse, so I'd watch it to see if it'd be better/worse than my expectations. Regardless, it'd have to be some fucking excellent television to make me overlook the setting and actually commit to it (which would be the 1% I mentioned, though wouldn't hold out much hope for). So the odds are very much against me watching it.

How can you endlessly bitch about the show if you don't watch it?

Exactly. If the only people who watch the show are the ones who love the "JJ-verse," then we'd have world peace on every Star Trek website because there'd be nothing but positive things to say about it. You JJ-haters aren't going to stand for that, are you? ;)

To put it more nicely, how can you be part of the communal conversation if you don't partake of the culture?

When did THIS happen? Not that I would complain. I hope it's true. But is it just a conclusion-jumping article hack trying to earn his five cents per word?

Quote from a ScreenRant article:
Chris Agar said:
CBS Consumer Products’ Holly Amos tweeted that [the "Kelvin Timeline" term] was a necessary development in order to provide an in-universe term to distinguish the new films from previous incarnations for an encyclopedia:

[Tweets snipped]

This will also be useful given that there will be a new Star Trek TV series airing in 2017. Paramount is already making plans for a big screen Star Trek 4, so it’s conceivable that there will be two separate versions of the franchise attempting to coexist. Casual audiences could appreciate the clear line of separation, especially since the upcoming show will be part of the original timeline – not the alternate universe that began in 2009. Through its 50 years of history, Star Trek has gone through many forms, and giving each era its own unique name helps fans keep track of it all to determine where in the canon everything fits.
Expand to see the important part.

The claim that the TV show will be in the original timeline is from the screenrant author not anyone at CBS. The only official statement was CBS calling the Abrams movies the Kelvin Timeline so they can refer to both timelines by names in official publications. The new TV show doesn't factor into that distinction. The TV show will either be talked about in the Original Timeline, the Kelvin Timeline, or a Timeline to be named later.
