The whole point in “this side of paradise” was that Spock, even if he liked her, would not get with her.
We’ll have to disagree. I believe Spock gave her the whole green Vulcan roll. He just had no open physical feelings for her.

Totally disagree: from what I gather it’s wasn't much unlike Spock’s relationship with Chapel, as much as she would have liked it there was no way Spock would go much further than being colleagues.
This might just be my favourite Star Trek movie (also my first!). It isn't without it's issues but I love it so much that it's among my favourite movies of all time!
Note to Cryo: That's a TAS referenceKirk's a jerk...![]()
They took out "On May 8th" but kept the black screen and blue line XDThe trailer though, even 11 years on is still one of the best in the last 20 years. Hell, it's an all-time great trailer.
Disco looks very KelvinizedOne other thing on '09, if only Paramount and CBS would pony up about $30 million dollars an episode and do a TV series that looked like Star Trek '09.
Maybe next lifetime.
Calm down, it's not worth it.For the mods and the wider record:
Trolling comments that begin with the first reply above (Post #2) are are a crystal-clear allusion to an exchange in the following thread that begins around here:

I'm being publicly maligned for my opinions on the Star Trek 2009 film, given in a separate location (as above -- runs for several pages), after I was encouraged to acknowledge this new thread and reassured it was for the purposes of genuine conversation. Unfortunately, this is hardly something new with adherents of the Abramsverse.
The other thread was becoming derailed and this one was set up to supposedly remedy that situation. But as you can see, it's just a troll tactic to shame me and mock ST 09 critics in advance. I am not against people having fun, but the well has been poisoned here; and now the new thread starter is denying his role in that process.
Most of it makes sense, the rest is no less sensical than the other movies XD-the plot makes no sense whatsoever
Yes: in TOS there was no indication this could have ever been a thing. It’s obvious they did it to give Zoe Saldana something more to do, but it really came out of the blue and, for me, didn’t work with where Spock was supposed to be in his life.
Fair enough, though there is a flirtatious look Spock gives Uhura while playing his Vulcan harp. I'm guessing (don't have any evidence) that this was the reason given for the relationship.
I ended up seeing it 9 times in theaters - different languages, and different people wanted to go see it over months and months IIRCI saw it four times at the theater, numerous times on Blu-ray in the intervening years.
Galaxy parts are on the Utopia Planitia ground facilities in TNGMy inner Trekkie rebelled at the idea of the Enterprise being built on the ground. At that same time, building something like it on the ground shouldn’t really be a problem for a society that has mastered matter, energy and gravity.
So I continue to be torn on the idea.
What languages out of curiosity?I ended up seeing it 9 times in theaters - different languages, and different people wanted to go see it over months and months IIRC

This is one that I always struggled to understand. Is there a reason why it was so off putting?
At that point, Spock is supposed to be engaged with T’Pring and it isn’t even public knowledge that he’s half human (Kirk thinks he has “a human ancestor”), why would he have a human girlfriend?
Totally disagree: from what I gather it’s wasn't much unlike Spock’s relationship with Chapel, as much as she would have liked it there was no way Spock would go much further than being colleagues.
Or it's possible, just possible, Spock and T'Prynn don't see their engagement as binding until marriage.
Spock having a romance seems out of character for someone whose reason as a character is as suppressor-of-emotion and outsider/commenter on the human condition. The point is to represent the Apollonian, even though, brilliantly in TOS and the movies, he struggled with it and ultimately rejected its strict adherence. (What a great character arc, as he developed from shouty to cold to integrated.)
But even in ST V and VI when he's out back together, he's still primarily the logic/reason character.
To have him acting like a college kid with his girlfriend: meh.
Also, Uhura was mainly elevated . . . to be Spock's girlfriend. Then dropped in Beyond. She was almost a full person in STID dealing with the Klingons for a moment iirc.
Many things about the movie (back to 09) smacked of immaturity on the part of the filmmakers. Have Kirk listen to Beastie Boys! Show Spock and Uhura making out! Kirk is an immature jerk! He does green women! Kewl.
Now, are all these things possuble/plausible? Yup. But in the totality, I got the sense of someone who keep throwing things in just for the sake of being provocative, which is at heart, immaturity. Nero addressing Pike informally as "Christopher"! That was the moment in the theater that took me out.
Is it plausible/possible? Sure. It just seemed like a filmmaker pointing to himself by inverting a Trek trope (formality) and being cool by doing the informality which is the order of our day.
Oddly, JJ made very, very (too) orthodox SW films. Imho, of course.
Agreed with everything, but I liked that detail of Nero: it showed he was not your regular Romulan admiral, only some angry ignorant idiot that thinks too much of himself, can’t come up with half a plan and only makes things worse for everyone.
That was the idea, right? Right?!
Heck he probably just had himself tattooed without knowing what it meant and his forehead read “hot chili” in ferengi.
That was my impression and why Nero is among my favorite villains. He isn't a super genius, or an advanced AI but a regular guy, someone who has suffered intense pain and witness tragedy and loss on a scale that few of the characters he encounters will understand. And, it goes to the theme of emotions running deep in the Vulcan and Romulan race, and just how destructive that can be.Agreed with everything, but I liked that detail of Nero: it showed he was not your regular Romulan admiral, only some angry ignorant idiot that thinks too much of himself, can’t come up with half a plan and only makes things worse for everyone.
