Star City | Apple TV (Spoilers)

Colonel Roskova never needed a German Language translator, but has instead, found a way to turn Irina Vasilenna's humanity into a tool to extract information from the spy being held in East Germany.

Roskova (perhaps named for and inspired by Marina Raskova) was testing Irina to see if she can be trusted, for KGB recruitment. I don't think she even expected her to gain any faithful.

I'm also leaning towards Roskova being the traitor, and she killed Akmatova just as much for the KGB not making mistakes as she needed to stall and control any investigation.

No this is something mentioned in S1 of FAM, anyway we'll see what happens.

I wonder if the Venus mission does actually take place.

Just put your suspicion in spoilers.

I do think the OTL 1970 Venera mission will take place, IIRC, the first to carry a lander, and this will be Polivanov's assignment/legacy.

OK sure

I'm sure it was mentioned in FAM that a Soviet moon mission crashed killing the 3 crew

That was referenced in Episode 4 of FAMK, which is in 1971. At the moment, Star City is still in Late 1969, so we may never reach that point, or its a cover for Venera 7.

It’s a good show, but I really don’t like dark pessimistic stuff as much as I once did, which was the reason I like FAM. There isn’t a single character in this show so far I give a damn about besides Nikulov and unfortunately we know he’s got decades of misery and death ahead of him. It’s a joyless premise to start off with. If I want to see oppressed brainwashed people living in an oppressed regime I can just walk around town, now.
I think my Dad would have similar views re the so far more pessimistic side. He was a fan of FAM too.

I hope they don't do that. As the decades go on, FAM liked to play with physics a little too much, fusion drives that went well beyond what we could conceivably achieve even if we had fusion reactors at above breakeven, now, or the impossible SSTO shuttle.

but a Venus landing in the 70s.. or even now is impossible. A flyby was perfectly possible in the 70's and 80s. Both NASA and the Soviets seriously considered it. But a landing would take an even bigger rocket to get you off the surface of Venus than it took to get off Earth. There's thick atmosphere the rocket would fight against plus little rotation to give you extra delta-v.

The only way to do it would be with an Orion type launch off the surface using a nuke against a pusher plate, but the resulting instant acceleration would essentially pulp the astronauts.

Unless the alt-timeline Soviets came up with their own version of a HAVOC-like Venusian dirigible mission, I would have a hard time seeing humans visiting that planet in any universe.

This show is appropriately dark and grey. I don't know how anyone lived under that kind of paranoia and suspicion. I really feel for Anastasia.

I genuinely thought they would pull a bait and switch and, even though we knew that Belikova was the first woman on the moon, that she would get spaced and they would go Capricorn One on us.

Descriptions for future episodes refer to Irina having an unwise encounter. I think this is with Polivanov, as per my suspicions in the FaMK thread, and she falls pregnant. However, with a burgeoning career in the KGB, after uncovering Roskova as the mole, she gives up baby Lenya up to Belikova and Sasha, who are unable to have babies and the Commitee thinks her having a baby will help her image (widowed single mother after Sasha is lost on the Venera flyby) which fits with the hints in Season 5, although a lot of guess work.

Im really struggling with this series. I’m just finding it boring and I can’t get into any of the characters. The only thing I enjoyed was the ending which finally took place in Space. I’ll keep going with it but if it wasn’t part of the FAM universe I probably would have bailed after this episode.

Im struggling too. Only watching because too because of FAM

While I didn't expect the characters to speak in Russian with sub titles I did expect them to have Russian accents l, its all very British sounding.

It looks depressing and is very slow.

I'll stick with it but I wouldn't be surprised to see it cancelled.

I dunno i find the old way of doing it with pseudo accents a bit cheesy nowdays.

I enjoyed this episode, a big reveal for sure. I'm not sure how they think they'll get away with a secret Venus mission though.

Are we going to get a version of Nixons Women for Venera? Brezhnev's Boys?

We know broadly how history will play out and how the Soviets will establish a secret Moon base as well as how they don't ever go to Venus (unless somehow that's kept quiet, too).
It would be absolutely amazing to find out there actually was a Soviet facility on the moon with red strobe lights the whole time, just like the ants turned out to be (mostly) real.

I'll join the line of people struggling to watch the show and this episode did little to boost my experience.

Everyone is so miserable on the show - arranged marriages that make no one happy, a strained marriage including infidelity, spying on people, Soviet style population control and intimidation and i haven't even mentioned the actual villain characters yet.

The only redeeming factors of the show are when it comes to the engineering and space parts but is that enough?`So far not and i'm not sure i want to slog through a show where 60% is just a joyless chore to get through to the exciting parts.

I wonder why the producers and writers thought this show would be a good idea and that people would love it? There is precious little to root for in this show, it is so drab and desaturated that it sucks out all the joy it tries to maybe create.

On FAM you had this hopeful atmosphere, the race against the Soviets led by likeable characters like Ed, Gordo, Tracy, Margo and Dani amongst others. Yes, there was drama and also personal drama but apart from the Danny Stevens storyline i can't say i have heard people disliking any of them to any great degree.

If the producers were here i'd really like to ask them why i should continue to watch it and what i should get out of the show according to them because me fast forwarding through the miserable personal stories in the third episode is not a good sign.

Yeah i'll happily live in the decadent West, where i will be lied to too but at least the supermarkets are full and i don't have to smuggle music into my country ;)

I loved the anecdote of either Brezhnev or Gorbachev, who visited a western Supermarket during a diplomatic visit ( i forget if it was the US or somewhere in Europe) and seeing all the shelves overflowing with goods of all kinds knew that communism would lose in the end.
