When I was in college, I always seemed to end up in a top-floor dorm room, fourth or fifth floor. And I always took the elevator unless there was a fire alarm. In retrospect, that's probably how I packed on 50 pounds in three years.
My last apartment was the second floor in a house, up the steepest, most rickety staircase on the planet. I would have been grateful for even a dumbwaiter to get my groceries up safely.
This is a video of mine. I posted it before. It's from a department store here in Taipei. It's about 8 or 9 stories. The line for the elevator has a sign that says 15 minute wait! An yes, there's an escalator.
I'll climb 100 floors on the stairmaster at the gym for exercise, so I figure when it comes time to go from the parking lot to my office on the 3rd floor, It's ok to take the elevator.
I live in a 3-floor townhouse, so I'm always taking the stairs there.
And, at work, I always take the stairs: 4 flights from my parking spot in the lower level garage to my office on the 3rd floor, and I'm constantly going up and down the 2 flight between my office and the rest of my company's offices on the second floor. I figure any additional exercise is a good thing.
I don't have to deal with multiple flights of stairs on a regular basis. My university library has 4 floors and a basement. I'm fine going up three flights unless I'm in a lazy mood. If it's four or more, it will almost always be the elevator/escalator for me. I know I'm not in the best of shape. A couple years ago I climbed the equivalent 12 stories of the Cape Hatteras lighthouse. I was totally fine until about half way up after which time it felt like my legs were going to fall off.
