ST5 - Unused Uniforms

there are no pockets in the future, it’s gene’s vision. And even more so no zippers, enterprise isn’t canon!

The Class-B trousers in TMP had canonical side-pockets, as did the field jackets. (Also the field jackets in ST II.)

Did they ever establish that the PerScan device was meant to double as a belt buckle?

As in to hold up your trousers?

Beat you to it. ;)

In my personal headcanon, I always imagined that the perscans evolved into the little knobby thing on the back of the maroons.

And then again into the combadge. Makes sense; the technology gets better, gets smaller, gets combined with other miniaturizations. Just as our phones hold a multitude of tools, so too did the combadge replace a series of older pieces of equipment.

I personally love the Monster Maroons.
Did and didn't like the SNW update, I like that they made it look like its thinner and easier to wear, I dispise the pleather microprinted sleaves like the Green wraparound, to me looks horrible. If they wanted that and just did it on the fabric? then maybe. but the pleather is just off putting.

I remember seeing the Disco S2 yellow uniform in a behind the scenes look. the shirt was standing up by itself! Did NOT look comfortable in the least. Glad they went with the simple t shirts of the SNW series.

There should be different uniforms in trek on ship.
Going by current military ( marine) uniform we have:
Alpha: Dress, reporting to duty, special occasions, hardly ever worn.
Bravo: Office worker, Long sleeve, tie, slacks. Semi comfortable.
Charlie: Office worker, Short sleeve, no tie, slacks, very comfortable
Utility: Everyday uniform, used in the field, comfortable, ironed version used for meetings etc.
Coverall: Maintenance workers standard uniform, one that gets dirty daily. Ultra comfortable. had velcro on the front for a mission patch and a name/rank patch.

Trek should have uniforms for different ranks/ what there doing on ship.
Engineer would have some type of working uniform, depending on what there working on, rad suit, coveralls for crawling in tubes.
Security would have more of a heavy Utility, plenty of pockets etc.
Standard crew wear, labs, etc.
command crew/bridge crew would maybe be like a charlie, somewhat dressy, but comfortable enough to wear all day. Change over for away missions to a utility, jacket etc.

we use those on my fan film and don’t find them uncomfortable in the least. They are official products but of course this won’t mean they are identical to the one used on the show (I’m sure they aren’t).

The only real issues we have with them is that they tend to get dirty incredibly fast for some reason (and showing it a lot!) and that collar that tend to move distractingly when someone speaks. We’ve actually started to tape the collar down to avoid this issue.

I recall, not quite sure it’s correct, that the uniforms were changed to the kestrel maroons to hide the…er… expanding waistlines of the cast. Big, bulky, form hiding apparel for an aging talent team.

I've never heard that, and I am pretty dubious that's actually the case.

My theory - in 1982 - was that the oblong shape behind the ST II insignia pin is the Perscan device. It even has the little round button on one end.

Interesting. As an aside, I always hated that badge (the regular one, although this Hood version is particularly bad). Makes the Delta so hard to read - the simple Delta+circle badge Kirk wore in TMP would have looked so much better against the maroon.

It needs a white background to really pop, though. I'm sure that was the rationale for the new rectangular piece behind the pin.

Except... the rectangular piece obscures the design and makes it pop less. At any distance, it's a shapeless blob, the bronze delta totally lost against the bright rectangle.

I'm not sure at all that a gold badge needs a white background to pop; it needs contrast. And the gold parts of the TWOK badge stand out just fine against the red wool. A gold badge like Admiral Kirk wore would have plenty of contrast on the maroons.

Edit: something like this.

Re-tailored, sure.

But Generations was twelve years after TWOK. Shatner was in his mid-60s by that point, and Doohan was in his mid-70s. Just because a couple actors got heavier doesn't mean that the TWOK uniforms were designed for that possibility to happen a decade later.

I've read a lot of reasons why Meyer wanted a heavier, more structured uniform. Waistlines haven't been among them yet.

The problem is the maroons' badges are brass colored and not gold, so they get lost against the uniform color, and the white behind it hinders it reading, as your eye tends to lock onto the lightest part.

Kind of redundant, as there a large Delta on the belt. looks weird with 2. If you do that get rid of the one onthe belt.

That's absolutely true, and kind of baffling. I have no idea why Fletcher decided to downplay the delta by making it the darkest and dullest element of the badge. The bronze gets totally lost against the white, cream, and bright gold of the rectangle.

It's one of the reasons I say this uniform is over-designed. There's a lot I like about it, but it's spoiled somewhat by some pointless details that add nothing but clutter and diminish the design.

Even better!

And streamline the sleeve a little bit.

Couple small changes, removing the fussy details, and I think it's greatly improved.

As an aside, it is my creation, so thanks for that.

In 1980, I was trying to design a unique insignia and looked over all the designs depicted in the "Star Trek Concordance". I counted the sides on each insignia and realised that none had seven sides, and came up with this.

I like it. And it has served Captain Therin well for several, er, four, decades.
